Dude has a great body attacked and pedigree, but since when did he become the "man to beat" when he hasn't beaten anyone of note except for leftovers and fringe contenders?
There's so much praise for the guy with his heavy hands and balanced attacked, but have we really seen him in vs a top guy? Someone that would give him claim to being the best MW in the world?
Well Sergio remains the man to beat, but I think the general consensus is that GGG beats him especially at this point in his career. It's perfectly reasonable to believe that Golovkin can take out the MW division. Until that happens though, Martinez is the guy.
What about Lara and Ward?, Gennady wanted to fight Chavez at 168 but when somebody mentionss Ward "he still got business at 160" LOL :bottle::lame:
So going by your logic it's irrelevant that none of the top guys want any part of him at 160?
But that's alright because he can just move up and fight Ward right? A guy who's not been offered a fight by his promoter for how long now? I'm sure Kovalev would be more than happy to fight Ward and it's a doable fight since they're both with HBO....see what I did there? :trink26:
He may or may not be. Fact is 140, 147, 154 are deeper divisions. Martinez is pushing 40 for f#ck's sake. He'll probably fight GGG and lose due to age. But in this day & age the top fighters never face all the dangerous opponents out there. Quillin & GGG may never even meet. I dont think people are scared of GGG...though it cracks my ass up to hear macho wannabes claiming that
No one's willing to fight him, that how you know he's the man to beat. Same is true for Kovalev when you got guys jumping networks to avoid getting an ass whooping.

To reiterate what others have suggested, there is a failure in some cases to distinguish the champion (i.e. "the man") and the best fighter in the division. Most of the time, these two things overlap and there is no confusion. Right now at 160, the sense is that Martinez's physical decline has created a state in which, although he is the legit MW champ, there is rightly a question about whether he is the best fighter in his own division. Thus, you get two different interpretations of "world's best MW." Of course, it's all a matter of speculation for the time being. I say until the matter is decided in the ring, Martinez holds onto his claim as the best MW in the world.
It's like people claiming Kovalev the best light heavy. Too many Europeans acting like idiots when ratings look right at them and say different.
Look at some P4P lists here, by gawd.
More than enough fools on the other side of the fence to even it out. Broner's p4p #6 ranking will forever outdo anything near the realm of overhype.

Kovalev is #3 and but imo he actually has a much better claim than Golovkin, he has beaten similar comp. to Stevenson.
Fwiw Darnell Boone fought both, and he picked Kovalev to win.

Since the best mw in the world (Sergio) and his promoter (dibella) refuse to fight him.
Well if people would stop avoiding him then I'm pretty certain you will change your mind sooner or later. I think people are not only pleased by his boxing credentials (Mainly) but also his out of ring personality and so on.
I rate him in the top 5 regardless of which division he switches through, I'm not saying he's the P4P best but he certainly has the tools to become that.
