Showtimes not focusing on profit with Mayweather.

Ultimately, Haymon can always walk away from Espinoza and offer HBO a deal that makes sense, despite their history. It might not be easy but he has fighters HBO would love to show and they would find a way. Espinoza has no such option available to him. He's given Haymon obscene amounts of money in building the Showtime boxing brand, and it would all go up in smoke if Haymon walked away. They could go back to being what Showtime was, but it would be difficult to justify the cash he's spunked away if at the end of it all they were back to square one.

Being in a loving relationship with a manager who loves to waste 750k on sparring sessions damn near every month isn't a good indicator of the future. Add Mayweather's ridiculous price tag, average numbers aside from the Canelo mega fight and more crappy undercards with overpaid side show acts and you aren't bound for any interest or revenue any time soon.

Out of floyd's 4 PPV events with showtime, only 1 out of the 4 events PPV numbers been officially released by stephen espinoza.

Problem with that is that they started with throwing huge amounts of money on meaningless fights. It's not surprising why Haymon fighters are not fighting each other. They can't afford the amounts these fighters are demanding. These are not even Cotto/Canelo caliber fighters where profit is guaranteed. If Santa Cruz gets $750,000 for fighting a sparring partner, how much do you expect this guy would demand if he's asked to fight Rigondeaux? Pacquiao went to Showtime for the Mosley fight. Pacquiao is responsible for making Showtime popular. The reason why Floyd is popular on Showtime is because he is piggy backing the popularity Pacquiao brought to Showtime. If Pacquiao hadn't gone to Showtime to make them a popular network, then Floyd would still be with HBO. Also, the only reason why Pacquiao and HBO is willing to work with Showtime is because Floyd made showtime famous and Pacquiao wants to piggy back off of the popularity that Mayweather brought to Showtime

Showtime don't seem to be focusing on profits with anyone. It's starting to look like Espinoza has set up a charity.

As a broadcaster of boxing Showtime has been way behind HBO for quite a while. The TS is correct, he just didn't articulate it all to well. The move to get Floyd is a "Loss Leading" strategy. At the very least Sho knew it had the potential to be that. What i mean by a loss leader in this case is Floyd as boxing's most marketable, recognisable brand is basically being offered to viewers by Showtime at below their profit margin when the number happens to hit less than a million. The reason this is being done is to build the Sho brand as the leader in boxing, attract new subscribers and viewers who watch boxing (they have less than HBO). The idea is to build profitability longer term by offering Floyd at a loss when the numbers don't meet expectation. This is why they made the deal. With the ratings for Showtime this year, looks like the 'loss leading' strategy is going swimmingly :boxing:

Whether Showtime makes profit with Mayweather or not, that's not what they are focusing on. Boxing will continue after Mayweather. They are thinking long term. They are using Mayweather for exposure and viewers. Not profit. The profit will come after Mayweather retires and Showtime has a big following. It seems like Showtime is going on the right path right now. They are stacking Mayweather's undercards and building young fighters. So once again, Mayweather is there for exposure. Not profit.
