maybe its the fact that he followed amir khan's blitzing of luis collazo but to me floyd looked quite slow in his come from behind victory against chino. chino was landing shots from all angles early and he even made floyd look a bit wild at times (have never seen floyd look this way). i imagined if floyd fought khan he would have started the fight in the hole but would make the adjustment but now after seeing him start that way against chino i actually think khan has a legit chance of winning against floyd. floyd looked shook in a way i've never seen in between the early rounds of the fight. chino isn't even anywhere near the fastest guy at 147. thurman, porter and khan all looked to possess fast hands in their last outings. floyd was throwing his patented counters early but chino saw them coming and was picking them off. i was a bit shocked by that. anyone observe anything else as far as slippage? maybe maidana was the right opponent to expose some flaws in the 37 years old version of mayweather
What I saw was that Mayweather wasn't expecting Chino to be leaning that heavy on him or coming in at such awkward angles. It was like he refused to accept it and kept going back to the ropes. His speed wasn't so much the issue, is was refusing to adapt over the first 5 rounds that made him look "off".
Slower, not slow.
Less movement, less footwork.
Still fast hands, still good reflexes but a little slower, less use of legs, slightly slower upper body movement. Still excellent defense, but is allowing opponents to swing on him more on the ropes, the more you allow your opponents chances to hit you the more you will end up getting hit regardless of how good your defense is. Rarely does he get hit in the center of the ring except for odd jab, but since he's on the ropes more and more, he's getting hit more and more. Still.. not a lot, though.
He only doing it for the fans doe.
Maidana hardly landed overhand rights in the center of the ring. He landed few overhand rights the entire fight, even when he had Floyd against the ropes. And that's where he landed his best shots, mostly body shots. Defensively Floyd was unusually NOT in shell mode a lot of times during the fight. And it wasn't because of anything Maidana did.
Ridiculous. Maidana was testing May's shell hard and the angle of Maidana's overhand rights made Floyd more reluctant to use the shoulder roll. Just because you consider it messy work on the ropes doesnt mean punches to the the side, top, and back of Floyds head werent making him think twice.
I said leading up to the fight Maidana needs to test Floyds shell on the ropes and when he stands in the pocket and thats precisely what he did. I also said Floyd needs to stay moving but interestingly enough I underestimated Maidana's ability to dictate space with the jab and cutting off the ring. May was on his legs for nearly the whole 4th round and Maidana still caught up to him.
but I see what kind of party this is... dont give Maidana any credit at all.
The few times he was hit with Chino's overhand right while in the center of the ring he was in that stance.

It had nothing to do with speed. Maidana took Floyd off his game plan. It's too bad that Maidana couldn't keep the pace thru the entire fight ..... if he did, Floyd would have been in deep deep trouble! ....oh yeah, except for those 2 judges that didn't know what they were watching.
Those shots will have an effect on Floyd going forward. Turning around and fighting four months after that (at the age of 37) won't make it easy.
you make a lot of great points in this thread. floyd absorbed a lot of punishment in this fight. he always makes people miss and makes it look so easy in there that we almost forget floyd is human at times. maidana was able to connect more than anyone imagined he would on mayweather and the physical toll it took on floyd is not to be overlooked. those were shots from a puncher and even though floyd took the shots and never wobbled it will be interesting to see if there will be any lingering effects in september. he won't be taking a year off like he did in the cotto fight. 4 months is a fairly quick turn around. everyone was talking about boycotting mayweathers fight with chino because it was a mismatch and yet it was his most competitive fight since castillo. pretty much makes his next fight must see TV whether its a chino rematch of amir khan (who suddenly looks all wrong for floyd stylistically). mayweather always finds that way to win but after the maidana fight it becomes clear that its going to be a real challenge for floyd to remain undefeated if he fights his last 3 contracted fights. khan is no layup. he will have chino figured out better the 2nd go around but chino will still fight him tough also. the only real easy name floyd can fight at this point is danny garcia because i think floyd can take his punch, make him look slow and outbox him.
Floyd is still fast. He could land whenever he wanted but had to be careful in this fight.
floyd landed a high percentage of his shots but also missed wildly at times. i do want to say i mean floyd looked slow for his standards. he is still pretty fast but certainly not the fastest welterweight. is he a top 3 WW in terms of speed at 37? Khan, Porter, Thurman are all coming on strong as of late.
Floyd wasn't in Philly shell mode that much in the fight.
The few times he was hit with Chino's overhand right while in the center of the ring he was in that stance.
Yeah, thought it shocking to see Floyd get hit in the center of the ring at times by lead over hand rights. The angle at which Maidana throws those punches are PERFECT for penetrating the "philly shell'. But i also Thought it was incredible the way Floyd absorbed Chino's body shots. Showed no signs of them having any effect on him in the 2nd half of the fight. Infact, i thought Floyd's body work had more of an effect on Chino than the other way around.
Floyd wasn't in Philly shell mode that much in the fight. He was usually using a high guard quite often, kinda like he did against Judah. His father noted too that Floyd wasn't closing up (using the shell) like he wanted him to, especially while against the ropes.
With the body work, I think a lot of the punches were being smothered. So they didn't have big impact. Had some impact, but not major. Maidana was too close to Floyd. How many times have you seen a knockdown by a body shot with a fighter being so close? Not often.
Same with the Broner fight. None of the body work seemed to faze Broner. It was the head shots that hurt him. And the head shots that hurt him the most were the ones that landed when there was some distance.
He definitely has slowed down. But his "slowed down" is still pretty fast.
I thought Maidana was able to score effectively off the jab in the center of the ring which is not something you see often in a floyd fight.
I remember May saying that he could not clearly see for two round after he was cut in the 4th. I'm sure the rounds Maidana was able to score effectively off jabs was the 5th and 6th.

BTW i've considered Floyd past-prime since 2010. And have noticed a slow marked decline with every fight since then. Even in the Canelo/Guerrero fights, i wasn't all too impressed with how Floyd looked. Just thought each of those fights represented favorable style matchups which is why he won those fights by such wide margins. Especially with Canelo. But i don't really see a drastic decline since the Canelo fight. A little slippage, but nothing drastic.
Yeah that is very true. He had to reach deep into his bag of tricks and use some guile and wits to win. Impressive but a sign that the end is near. Some of those punches he took were alarming and the ones that were just missing could put him on his ass in a rematch.

something silencers pointed out to me in a PM is that floyd likely fights from muscle memory and is so used to punches coming from a conventional angles and stances that he was not really prepared for this type of onslaught, and hes not young enough to react the same way he used to like he did against jesus chavez. The more i look at it the more i see that it took alot of greatness to dig deep and take control of that fight.

Floyd's slowed quite a bit but the biggest loss is to his reflexes. Hand speed is still not bad but reaction to incoming punches is where you really see the decline. Plus, there's countless tape out on Floyd and it's clear Maidana had some of his moves down pat. Because Floyd has slowed he was able to capitalize.

Not as fast as he did in the past. There were moments when they were in the center of the ring and Chino threw 8 shots and Floyd threw back nothing. Floyd has always be reluctant to throw punches but now it looks like he holds back even more.
He's not holding back. His trigger finger just isn't that quick anymore.
