"I give it no better than 10 percent chance of happening," Top Rank chairman Bob Arum told ESPN.com. "There is not enough time now to do all the stuff we need to do to promote the fight, and then there is also the Canelo fight on pay-per-view against Lara in front of us . If we would have gotten this done when we should have gotten it done, we could do it, but we are out of time."
Arum said he relented on insisting on the extension and instead presented Chavez with two proposals. Under one proposal, Chavez would earn a certain amount of money to fight Golovkin without an extension. He would earn far more for the fight if he accepted the proposal with the extension.
"But what Chavez wants is the bigger purse without the futures," Arum said. "Why would we take a risk losing money on the fight with Golovkin and then we lose the kid as well? If we can make money and then he wants to go on his way, OK. But he can't have it both ways.
"So if he doesn't do the Golovkin fight, we'll offer him another fight, maybe for an HBO fight or a pay-per-view fight, but we're not going to offer him a fight where we are taking a big risk and we could lose money. For what?
Chavez gives a response in a separate Spanish ESPN article.

"It's not what I was expecting, but it also was not what one would expect for a fight with Golovkin" said Chavez Jr. " I simply want them to give me what I'm worth. Against Sergio Martinez, the fight sold in 600k houses and surely this fight would sell something similar. I want fair pay. I'm not asking for something excessive. Just what is just.", said the Mexican.
I don't like Arum either but in this case its basic contract business... There's no incentive for them to pay him big money and spend big money promoting a one-time appearance knowing he's jumping ship to the rival business the fight after that. Nobody would agree to that, Arum or otherwise. They'd have to lowball him to justify even bothering.
Chavez's fights with Vera drew huge ratings and his PPV with Martinez made huge money for Top Rank. Chavez-Golovkin would make huge money for Top Rank.
But they'd rather screw him out of a high profile/big money fight before he leaves for Golden Boy than cash in one last payday. It wouldn't be the first time for Arum.
Never wanted this fight for Golovkin anyway. He's not a 168lb fighter imo and if he became PPV he'd fight much less.
I'd like to see Geale or Quillin next.
Now's as good a time as any for HBO to show some common sense and allow Golden Boy back on the network. They should press for Golovkin-Quillin. Both are fighting low level opponents and both are without a next opponent. If HBO publicly announces it is willing to do the fight, it puts the pressure on Quillin to agree to the fight. Seriously, how stupid would HBO have to be to turn down Quillin for Golovkin because he's with Golden Boy?
golden boy black balled themselves from HBO. they went all showtime even before HBO gave them the boot. Only GBP guys that were still fighting on HBO were Broner and Hopkins due to contracts. GBP takes all their business to Showtime, what do people expect HBO to do?
God damnt I dont understand Bob at all. Chavez is leaving Top Rank that much is clear. They might as well cash him out on a big PPV fight with GGG. They are acting like they wont make money on this fight which is BS, this fight will do atleast as much as Chavez-Martinez on PPV.
I agree. Golovkin would almost for sure beat Chavez. Arum should be happy to milk a nice ppv out of him then send him to his rivals coming off a loss.
There's been no movement there. Oscar talking about mending with arum. What about HBO?
It wasn't GBP that left HBO it was the other way around. There are alot of fences that need to be mended to get the fights we want.

Unless Al swoops, which of course he might, I think HBO will do their best to hang onto him. They can pay him above the odds for a nothing fight to see out his contract with Top Rank and then make the Golovkin fight with him afterwards.
On the other hand maybe HBO are just happy to let Showtime keep spending for now. I guess we'll find out.
Golovkin vs. Quillin should be next. They both have no opponents and are fighting overmatched opponents. The time is now.
HBO wont mind someone they've built up go over to Showtime?
Quillin won't fight him, he'll want to fight someone like Les Sherrington.
Well obviously he's not going to get paid as much without the extension,.
So what though, can't he go and get it made as a free agent anyway? Why does Arum even matter in this conversation? HBO won't want to let Julio go and they want a big opponent for Golovkin, so can't they just take the lead and make this happen?
Exactly. Hbo needs to wake the f up.
well...that's 2 fights in 2014 that are out the window...first Stevenson-Kovalev and now this
this year sucks
Don't forget Mikey Garcia vs. Gamboa, **** you HBO and Bob Arum.
I prefer the Quillin fight is K2 is exploring for GGG. Hopefully HBO isn't a ***** about making an exception to the Golden Boy ban. Also hopefully Quillin doesn't price himself out.

Sounds like a good plan b. Quillin is collecting dust, clearly plateaued in the ring, monetarily, etc...to me, he isn't moving without a fight like this
