I've noticed in a many fights that when the fighter with the bigger name or like Paulie said "the more politically connected fighter" is in trouble or hurt inside the ring the ref gives way more time for the fighter to recover than they r supposed to like last night I think Pearson probably would have been stopped when he got hurt if he wasn't connected, and badu jack should have been stopped after the first kd when he was standing but very wobbly what do u guys think?
It's a natural bias that exists in every sport. I guess whatever you want to believe is the cause for that bias, you can believe it.
That's just not true. Whenever there's a ref. there can be some bias, but box is by far the sport in which the bias of both ref. and judges is the worst.
There's several cases of dozens, even hundreds of fouls that should have gotten boxers DQ dozens of times over being completely ignored, while if the non-protected boxer does the slightest mistake, he immediately gets it brought to his attention and gets a point deducted so as to not even think of doing that again. We see that BS all the time. Then there's judges that are very clearly in someone's pocket.
Its too bad, but it is what it is.
This. Case in point the Yuri foreman fight where the ref told Yuri he didnt want him going out like that and letting Yuri continue. He let Yuri be a champ until the end.
But Id say most are influenced and some maybe intimidated or maybe not intimidated always but there's also bias. What that referee did was outrageous. If a fighter says I quit or his corner says he has had enough then that's it and the fight is over. The referee is not supposed to question the decision of the fighter or his corner to quit the fight. The referee is not supposed to give the fighter a pep talk and try to convince him to keep fighting.
A good referee wouldn't do that but some referees do. UK referees almost always do what they can to help the UK fighter win over a visiting fighter. It's a UK tradition.
badou jack shouldnt have been stopped after the first knockdown. getting hurt is part of the business, the real question is how you respond. he was hurt but he knew were he was and wanted to continue. after he showed an inability to buy time and recover the ref did the right thing stopping it, but he needs to be given that opportunity.
i havent seen the pearson fight yet but considering he recovered thats all but proof he was okay to continue. the refs job isnt to babysit the fighters its to stop the fight when a fighter is at risk of getting permanently hurt or isnt capable of defending himself. thats clearly notthe case when someone comes back to win. dont get me wrong, there are instances when a fighter is allowed to continue and goes the distance but teh fight still should have been stopped. thats generally not the case though.
I just think its human nature. They know the big name fighter is who the fans came to see and will often times give them that extra time.
I think also when a guy is a champion you let him have every opportunity to recover and get back in the fight.
My best friends uncle was an NBA ref for many years and he tells me all the time that they don't even think about it but the crowd reaction often times dictate a close call.

I think influenced is a better word than intimidated.
Like Smoger was influenced by B-Hop not necessarily intimidated by him.
Yeah this is a more accurate way of putting it. I agree though, there are definite times where the ref kind of acts favourably depending who he is reffing.
Kind of like how Mercante likes Cotto...

Exactly. They are not intimidated but they do understand that if they dont go along the couple big name firms in the business they might as well do something else for a living.

Maybe if the ref has no spine or is trying to be favorable to a big promoter/fighter. I hate bad refs even more than corrupt incompetent judges. The fighters lives are in the refs hands in many cases.
