I don't care about luis miguel, but that case is different
Luis miguel since birth his parents claimed he was mexican.
i even dare to say that some harcore ricans here will agree with me.
Garcia saying he's rican feels forced.
I love boxing and never hang to nationalities or races.
But even i can say Garcia is not rican as Wilfredo gomez, macho camacho, etc etc etc etc.
It feels forced!
He is a Puertorrican as anybody born in the island. Then you have guys like Luis Miguel who was born in PR and claiming Mexico! There is no problem with that either!
IMHO he's rican because he claims it. (lately)
BUT
He's not rican like Trinidad,Camacho,Wilfredo etc etc.
Those guys were rican since they breathed air.
I can bet that if Garcia wasn't a boxer and applied for a job he woudn't claim that he was rican. ( he just wants the ppv from P.R. he knows cotto is not going to last a a lot in boxing so he wants to be the next rican star)
I'm from Mexico and it's the same with some boxers born in the usa.
Yes they are mexican-american, but some of them claim that when it suits them.
Ofcourse he is part Puerto Rican heritage Like Khan is part Pakistan heritage and Joe Cal is part Italian decent and LL is part Jamaican decent
whats the big problem?
You can rep two flags, many boxers have done it, respect where ur from and also respect where ur parents came from
It all depends on the culture and country. In your case, it's maybe true. But in many other countries, a guy of your circumstance would be considered like a native. And even small things like your name is a huge deal and is a representation of your true origins and ancestry, even if they were born abroad. And the natives would never not claim you.
I've even seen half-breeds being claimed despite the fact they are 50/50 mixed. Depends on the countries and culture.
Care to share the names if said accepted fighters
There are people of 100% Italian heritage living in NYC. Their parents married other Italian immigrants. Italians in Italy don't consider them Italian. I know first generation Croatian kids (Yugoslavian back in the day). They speak Croatian but they are not considered to be Croatian.
My parents came from a European country. I'm first generation. I speak the language. My name is obviously from there. I have family there. I've been there many times. Believe me when I say that I'm not considered to be from there.
You mentioned you know what a Mexican looks like. Do you? What does an American look like? Like Mike Tyson? Like Jack Dempsey? Mexicans are comprised of two groups of races white/european/caucasion and native american with a lot of intermingling between them. I went to college with a blond-blue eyed girl who came to NY for college. Her family (on both sides had lived in Mexico since the middle 19th C - since before the American Civil War).
Just looked it up Mexico is 60% mestizo (mixed); 30% native american; and 10% european background.

Danny Garcia is a Puerto Rican he was just never raised in PR. It's like when people tell me Mikey Garcia isn't Mexican, I just tell them...

You're gonna walk up to Chinese kids in America and tell them they're not Chinese?
Well, he was born in USA. he says he's American, not Puerto Rican. His dad constantly btches about foreigners coming to America and how they are Americans. Danny doesnt speak Spanish, nor does he identify himself him anything related to Latino culture so I dont see where the confusion is. Hes as much Puerto Rican as he is Martian.
Danny Garcia is a Puerto Rican he was just never raised in PR. It's like when people tell me Mikey Garcia isn't Mexican, I just tell them...

**Ditto** Or how about look at theses fuking DNA results..

Is that WTF his problem is??? :nutkick:Man, thank you for making it clear to me...PRPP :boxing:Since you are a slow learner, I'll repeat: YOU are the one who DOES NOT KNOW SH1T! it is NOT shallow for someone to support a fighter from their own neighborhood over a fighter from across the seas! I will make it simple for you, again, no one is saying Garcia is not Puerto Rican but he will NEVER be fully embraced by native Puerto Ricans as one of their own for SIMPLE reasons that are not difficult concepts to grasp, really! He was not born and even partially raised in their culture, lived their lifestyle, nor made connections to the island! They will NEVER give their whole hearts to Garcia. They will support him CONDITIONALLY, not UNCONDITIONALLY! Case-in-point: The minute he signs to fight a native Puerto Rican fighter, that moment the ink dries, he becomes the enemy, the opponent, the unwanted!
It has to do with being an integral part of their (the Islander's) culture and he is not. Case-in-point #2. Dulorme is half Puerto Rican which is less than Garcia. Who do you think the native Puerto Rican's would support if Dulorme managed to become an opponent? Or Verjejo? Not Garcia! Dulorme and Verdejo ARE a part of the Puerto Rican Culture on the island. It is neither right not wrong, it just is what it is. Garcia will get UNCONDITIONAL support from back east and CONDITIONAL support from the Island! And the antithesis is also true. If Verdejo was to fight in Philly against Garcia some day, the local born and raised Puerto Ricans from the Philly area would support Garcia more than Verdejo or Dulorme for that matter. It comes down to CULTURE!! The really dumb thing that Garcia is doing is he is looking for something that he will NOT get a flight distance away, it has been right in his own neighborhood the whole time, UNCONDITIONAL support! If he wants THAT type of support, all he has to do is get on a plane, fly around the world, land back in his hometown, home state, get off the plane, and it will be right where he started from, right under his nose the whole time! He hasn't figured out that GBP is doing this next fight only for the money in hopes of drumming up new support/business but Garcia will not find what he is looking for over there in a genuine unconditional way, it is not possible!
This is the SAME EXACT dynamic as Oscar vs Chavez! Sure anyone can say "Isn't Oscar Mexican?, so why would folks south of the border not support him?". That is not how it works! They supported him RIGHT UP to the point before he signed to fight native Mexican, Chavez and then the folks south of the border pulled for Chavez and turned their backs on Oscar. They offered Oscar CONDITIONAL support and JCC UNCONDITIONAL SUPPORT. It is like a card came, unconditional beats out conditional. This is THE WAY IT IS! Get it? Got it? GOOD! Now go get a clue if you have to beg, borrow, or steal one!!!

I hear what you're saying, but you've gone beyond the point. The whole point of the topic wasn't really about local vs. not-local, it was more about Garcia being Puerto Rican or not, and accepted as such. Not whether he's more PR than a native, that's a crazy argument. Of course, a native is more PR.And I hear what you're saying in terms of support. I just wasn't feeling your examples, the Camacho Trinidad one was much better. What I said at the top of this thread is that it is not (or should not be) about whether Garcia is Puerto Rican or not....that is an argument for small minds because he is Puerto Rican in a blood sense and Puerto Rico can be his second home in a small way as far as support but it comes with a warning on the back of the package so-to-speak about who they will really support if he steps onto their property to face one of their own. And that is the telescopic look into the confusion regarding his heritage and closes down the part about "How is Danny not Puerto Rican?" which is the statement of someone who is confused about Danny's acceptance as a Philly Puerto Rican in native lands. So for people here to understand and discern, they need to realize the whole thing is about context. So the question "Is Danny Puerto Rican?" is answered as a resounding YES! The question of "Is Danny accepted in Puerto Rico in the way native Puerto Ricans are or favored as much as one of them?". That's is a resounding NO! He is not them, they are not him. As long as Danny understands that the depth of support they have for him is conditional, and that the folks back home will support him unconditionally, then his expectations will not be unmet. Edwin Rosario was one of them, Wilfred Benitez who as you can see on the left is one of my 5 favorite all-time fighters is absolutely. Same with Sammy Serrano who is in my top list. Deep adoration comes from having very real connections to others or them you and this goes beyond the blood link.
The thing with him is that he makes a lot of sweeping generalizations. A lot. Much of it isn't really fact. Some of it I think is true, but most of what he's saying is just assumptions based on his own perspective / his own opinion. It's a real debatable thing.
Is that WTF his problem is??? :nutkick:
Man, thank you for making it clear to me...
