Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer announced on Wednesday that unbeaten featherweight Gary Russell Jr, will return to the ring on the Jan. 30 undercard of Victor Ortiz-Luis Collazo undercard at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Ortiz-Collazo is being televised on Fox Sports 1, and will take place three days before the NFL’s Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., less than an hour drive from Brooklyn..
Coming off a unanimous decision over Juan Ruiz in August, Russell (23-0, 13 knockouts) will face Miguel Tamayo (14-7-2, 12 KOs).
In October, Russell was declared the WBO’s mandatory challenger to Mexican titleholder Orlando Salido, giving Salido a period of 180 days from that time within which to defend against Russell after having won the vacant belt by seventh-round knockout over Orlando Cruz. Salido is scheduled for a defense against against Ukrainian amateur star Vasyl Lomachenko for March 1.
"Gary is the mandatory for the winner of the fight between Salido and Lomanchenko, and he has full intentions of going after the winner of that fight," said Schaefer, during a conference call. "So I'm happy to have Gary back to make sure that he stays sharp and to showcase his immense talents at the Barclays Center."
Schaefer said that an offer for Russell to challenge WBC beltholder Jhonny Gonzalez was turned down by Gonzalez, who won the belt by a shocking first-round knockout victory over three-division titlewinner Abner Mares in August.
Mares suffered a rib injury which scuttled a proposed Feb. 15 rematch with Gonzalez, one that is still is likely.
"Gary Russell is continuing to chase the big fights. I know that some of the media members have attacked him for his quality of opponents and things like that, but I just want to set the record straight, here," said Schaefer.
"Gary was ready, willing and able to fight Jhonny Gonzalez, and he has called out Jhonny Gonzalez. We made a substantial offer to Jhonny Gonzalez's people for that fight, and Jhonny Gonzalez and his team turned it down."

Russell is a very good fighter he's just been moved along at a pathetic pace. It would be Loma's third fight so I don't think it would be that shocking.
I don't like this idea of moving him so fast, fighting Salido in his second fight is really risky and unnecessary imo
hes maybe good but nowhere lomas or garcias Level i think the biggest fight in several years would be loma- gracia
I think they only order one if GBP really ask for one
That will probably be the case here. Golden Boy probably hopes Russell will take out one of Top Rank's top prospects and win a title in the process.
People like to crap on Russell jr but I'll put points on him to beat Lomachenko if they fight.
lol, But seriously all your pionts for me if lomachenko beats both solido and Russel jr

What was the reason for PDL again?
Im positive he will beat solido because i watched both fights at the same time and the talent of lomachenko and solido is like sky and earthThe more talented fighter doesn't always win. And salido has all the tools he needs to derail that train. I wouldn't be surprised if lomachenko gets stopped or loses a decision.
Funny how you have a problem with Russell Jr getting a title shot but not Lomachenko huh? But you aren't bias at all according to you... Lol.
