He did it again as Rigo and Agbeko entered the ring. Rigo said in interview if he were Mexican the fans would love him. He says because he's Cuban and has a slick style he doesn't have a fan base. The commentators went on to say that the biggest reason is the language barrier. They also clarified that Mexican fighters don't have a problem gaining a fan base regardless of a language barrier. So here comes Max Kellerman with his two cents and crack pipe. "Ya well, Mexican boxers come from right across the border and already have a built in fan base here. Rigo comes from a small tropical island." He's implying that the only fans Mexican boxers get are strictly From Mexico. He's assuming Mexican fighters can't get any other fans. I know many White, Asian, and other Latinos who are fans of Mexican fighters. Why does it have to be a boxers own ethnicity to be called their fan base. I think it is very discriminative of Max to continue to discredit Mexican athletes in this manner. He continues to voice his non classy biased opinion and I would have to bring it to his attention personally if I saw him.

Of course Max Kellermen knows that Mexican fighters have non-Mexican fans also;Max Kellermen mean`t that Mexican fighters have mostly Mexican fans. When you see a popular Mexican fighter fighting, most of the people in the audience are Mexican. The reason Rigondeaux doesn`t have a fan base is because boxing in the U.S is a tribal sport;boxing fans generally support their own kind in the U.S if the fighters is of the same race, same ethnicity,or from the same state. And Cubans are not big boxing fans in the U.S,so there isn`t a Cuban boxing market to exploit in the U.S..Sergio Martinez is not a big ticket seller in the U.S,either its because there isn`t a big Argentian population in the U.S, or maybe the Argentinian population in the U.S are not into boxing. But when Martinez went to Argentina to fight,he sold out the stadium where he fought at.
they also think that rigo will gain more fans if he studies english? lol
Of course he would. How many more however, is up for debate. Apparently Rigo is a good trash-talker.
he's not the most popular, but there are reasons for that. For one, he has a lack of power. Rigo has pop. Vazquez also does a lot more holding and has a much uglier style. He hasn't beaten a guy considered top p4p like rigo. He has losses. He didn't have the amateur pedigree. The only reason Rigondeaux is an hbo main event fighter and he is not is the Donaire fight. Vazquez doesn't have a signature win like that. Even with all that, rigo and him are on almost the same level in terms of popularity. HBO doesn't even want to put Rigondeaux fights on. If it were Vazquez who beat Donaire, I guarantee he would get much more of a boost than Rigondeaux did. It almost seems like the Donaire fight hurt Guillermo's reputation despite him dominating.
miguel vasquez isn't a holder.....just shows how much you know about the fighter.
trust me vasquez beating a quality opponent the way he does isnt going to make him any new fans, hes still wont be popular.
its kinda like how abril "beat"rios, he didnt make any new fans with that style.
Mexican fans have taken a shine to Maidana even though he is from Argentina.
Why do you think they like him and not Rigo or Lara?
For the same reason they haven't taken a shine to Miguel Vasquez.
JMM wasnt a popular fighter with mexicans until he got older and started to get hit more, and obviously pac helped.
^
Mexican fans like fighters who come to fight.
Miguel Vasquez is Mexican. Is he popular? he's not the most popular, but there are reasons for that. For one, he has a lack of power. Rigo has pop. Ts is being sensitive. I don't like max but what he said was not racist especially since Mexican isn't even a race. I guarantee Rigondeaux would be more popular if he were Mexican. Look at DLH. He was always a technical fighter more than he ever was a brawler but he's one of the most popular to ever lace up a pair of gloves. Same with JCC.
I sure didn't interpret it that way at all. Max is just recognizing the reality of the sport there. Some fighters will have built in support for them and some will be like outsiders that have to be extra special to make a significant fan base. That's just the way it is.
lara is a black dude???
lara is cuban??
maidana is trained by Robert Gacia?
Maidana is fighting a American?
Maidana is fighting a American thats not latino i ethnicity??
Maidana is fighting a black guy??
Take your pick??
none of that. maidana has been popular before fighting adrien and being trained by robert garcia
its his fighting style
Gamboa would be a really popular fighter if he didnt make bad choices.
Good for you brother. I may be a little crazy but what's the major reason for everyone else's popularity like Russian, Philipino, or Black fighters? Is it due to their race only backing them? I think they do good either way. And the Marquez comment, almost equal number of Mexicans are a fan of Pacs. So what's Rigos excuse? Are you telling me that Mexicans can't make it big without the Mexican people backing them, but everyone else can? MK was out of line with that sh*t as always.
The truth is, there are hardly any fighters you can truly call popular. The remaining 99.9% have to rely on a fanbase, or general boxing fans, for support. I don't think there are any Russian fighters that are truly popular (yet) in the U.S. The Klitschkos are Ukrainian. They're popular in Europe, but considered boring here. Filipinos? Outside of Manny, there's really no one. Even Donaire was just trying to climb the ladder, when Guille derailed him. I was at the Rigo-Nonito fight and, while there were a lot of Pinoys, they didn't make up the majority of the audience. In other words, people were there to watch other fighters, too, not just the Filipino. My opinion is that black people do not support black fighters just because they're the same race -- not anymore, anyway.
Rigo's situation has been discussed on these forums ad nauseam. He'll never be popular because his style almost guarantees he won't. Guille has no fanbase. There are less than two million Cubans in the U.S. (as opposed to thirty million Mexicans and people of Mexican decent). He's also relatively new and unknown in the pros. Those are his "excuses."

Of course Mexican fighters have fans outside Mexico and Mexican-Americans. I am, and have been, a fan of certain Mexican boxers. But you're crazy if you think that their built-in fanbase isn't the major reason for their popularity. Even the great Marquez wouldn't have gotten so much notoriety outside of his Mexican fanbase it wasn't for Pacquiao. Kellerman said nothing that wasn't true. Good for you brother. i guess he doesnt remember JMM's day when he struggled to get a fan base due to his style....
and i guess carlos molina and miguel vazquez have a HUGE FAN BASEs.
Bigger fan bases than all the cubans combined lol:fest30:

Wth, it's our thing like any other sport to Mexican Americans. Most Latinos here ain't even up on boxing but you ask about USC or Raiders or Lakers and they talk your ear off. Maybe it's what they know in Mexico, but here in the states don't know if you know this but we have assimilated into society like everyone else. Politically correct? He said that s*it with an attitude toward Mexicans. You have to be a rock not to pick up on that Homie!
I grew up with Mexican Americans. Trust me, growing up all my Mexican buddies were forced to watch some JCC or they damn sure knew about Oscar or Fernando Vargas. That's how I got into boxing.
Matter of fact, only my Mexican and black buddies know ANYTHING about boxing, and even care about it.
My Asian and white buddies don't even care. I have like 2-5 Asian/white buddies that are somewhat knowledgeable, and all they care about is Floyd/Manny.
