I guess HBO and all of you forgot that Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. became champ 9.23.13 holding the WBO belt. Danny Garcia Puertorican who is our super champ!!
Lets put it this way, if a fighter in the same division as Danny Garcia comes out of the Island of Puerto Rico, the people from the Island will be supporting that fighter and the Puerto Rican's from the states who were born here, especially from back east will support Danny. There are dividing lines and they would be evident in such a matchup. There is no complete unity between PR's from the Island and PR's from here. Lines are drawn when it comes down to the small detail of the origin of a Puerto Rican fighter.
While that's technically true, those who are born/raised or living on the island are representing PR when they fight. This thread shows that there's a variety of opinions on this topic. Some don't make the distinction between where you live/represent and your ethnicity/lineage, while others do. My dad was born and raised in PR, came to the U.S. in his teens and he'd tell you he's Puerto-Rican. My mom was born in Dominican Republic, has lived in the U.S. since she was nine and has no emotional attachment to the island. When speaking to a fellow American and asked, "Where are you from?", the assumption is that they're talking about your ethnicity, so I tell them where mom and dad are from.
Anyways, Cotto will be the next guy to get a chance at a belt if he fights Martinez or Molina.
Yea... it is a territory.
But yea... those questions are hilarious. They'd as me that and I say California or some other place I live.... and then they're like... no...you know what I mean. Where are you from.... from?
WV bs title doesn't count. There are no current champions FROM Puerto Rico BUT there is a Puerto Rican champion in Danny swift Garcia. Stop acting like ya never saw his PR flag on his boxing trunks before. Ya that mad at us??? That ya gotta reach this much to try and sh1t on how bad PR boxing is???? Smh
"American" lol I wonder if anyone knows there is no such thing as PR nationality. If you are born in PR you are an American citizen.

9/20/13 vs Guillermo Avila @ Kissimmee Civic Center, Kissimmee, Florida,
WBO International super bantamweight title
Thats NOT a world title,,, and in top of that is from the ****ty wbo which is rican...
ZERO
You are what your blood says you are.
I was born and raised in America...and my mom's 100% PR. Just because I wasn't born in PR doesn't mean I'm not, that's ridiculous.
Exactly bro
Danny Garcia is Puerto Rican. He's just not from Puerto Rico. He's full blooded Puerto Rican that was born nd raised in Philadelphia. When he was first coming up as a boxer he claimed he wanted to be the next Rican great. In his gym he put up a drawing with the Rican flag with himself and several Rican greats on it. He was recently at the Rican parade in Philly and was repping Puerto Rico and was saying how proud he its to be Puerto Rican (they showed it on showtime couple weeks ago). He even came out with the Puerto Rican flag in his trunks for a couple fights and thanked the island of Puerto Rico when he beat either Morales or Khan. He even told Oscar he wanted to fight in Puerto Rico its on YouTube.

Cotto and Margarito were both born in the US, but everyone considers them from Puerto Rico and Mexico, but Robert Guerrero,Brandon Rios and Danny Garcia who don't speak 10% of spanish, no matter how hard they try, they will never be consider mexicans or puerto ricans.
i've got no issues with anybody repping anybody, but danny was born in Philadelphia, and speaks no spanish at all.
he's an american of PR lineage.
genetically he is PR, but he learned to box here, and has an american style.
PR guys usually have a distinct style, with a lot of circling on the toes and ball of the feet. danny steps to the side, and is flat footed most of the time. very different styles.
Garcia considers himself American. Vasquez Jr. holds an irrelevant title.
I can't remember when Puerto Rican boxing has ever looked worse. Usually if you don't have champions you at least have up and coming prospects and the Puerto Ricans don't even have prospects! Other than Jayson Velez and Verdejo, who is at least 2 years away from a title shot.
PR really needs to step it up. Cotto will soon retire, Cintron/Juanma are faded, and Martinez/Vasquez Jr./Cruz have hit their ceiling. That will leave Dulorme/Velez/Del Valle/Gonzalez/Verdejo to pick up the slack.
Garcia ain't rican, give it up you hopeless drones.
This has to be the most stupidest **** ive ever heard. He is rican its just that he wasn't born in the island and represents U.S.A.
So I guess Lennox Lewis is Jamaican?
Definitely!!!!...deep down the Brits know it as well...in Jamaica they've always referred to LL as a yard man!!
Swift is a Rican who was born and raised in Philly....just because he was conceived and raised in Philly doesn't take away from his right to be known as a Rican.....geography and DNA are not the same
Both the Garcia's are American. One has Puerto Rican blood and one Mexican. If you were born and raised in America, you're American. If these two aren't American, then America has zero champions unless there is a Native American champion I don't know about. I also feel it's ok for the people of their nationality to claim them. Like someone said earlier "how can you tell a Mexican with Mexican blood running through their body they're not mexican?"
But for you Puerto Ricans claiming Danny I guarantee if he fought a up and former olympian from the island, you'd be rooting against Danny. And claiming Vasquez Jr is a REAL champion is comical.

I know WV2 just a won, but which belt was it?

WBO International super bantamweight title
That's not a ****ing world title! That's like saying the 7th contender for the actual WBO World Championship title, who holds a small regional title which will get him into a title shot one day, is a world champion. He's not, and it's not. He's just a contender that holds what amounts to nothing in reality. It's not a world title. It's just a regional BS belt. It's similar to, but not as worthy, as an Interim title (which is laughable in itself).
It's like saying the IBO title is a proper world championship belt. ****, it's like saying Vanes' Silver World Interim IBO Jr Middleweight NABO Semi Pro International POS is a real world title.
Oh so now having the WBO belt is not considered nothing??? What is it a fake belt now???
WV2 holds a current WBO belt and was born and lives in PR weather you like it or not and then we have Garcia.
That's not a world title bro... it's a minor or regional title.
And if a Puertorican family moves to China nad has kids born in China are they Chinese????? Sounds dumb right??? Cuz it is...you are from where your parents are not where you are born.
Holy ****...wow...just wow...soooooo since civilization began in Africa we're all African? Or did you create an imaginary cap on the year your location begins to count? :dunno:
