I have been a fan of Marquez since watching him live at the Great Western Forum (I miss those days, they had some great fights there)
And back then when the 3 modern Mexican Greats were all Featherweights (MAB, JMM, and EM) I felt that JMM was being ducked by MAB and EM because he had a very good chance of beating them both and the main reason that they could duck him without getting to much flack about it was because JMM really had no fan base to speak of. (High risk, low reward)
And even to this day in Mexico (I'm Mexican, born in Monterrey, Mexico raised in So Cal) JMM is respected but not loved like his fellow Mexican warriors, and his last fight there were so many empty seats it was like someone pulled the fire alarm. (partially due to the ever exciting Bradly)
What do you think is the reason for the lack of support?
Barrera was not a brawler! He's a boxer just like JMM. IMO at their worst, Barrera could be more boring and passive.
JMM's career is the opposite of Barrera, he was defensive and technical in his early years, then he became more aggressive and would get involve in FOTY type fights. Whereas Barrera was just the opposite, he got more careful as he got older
After he lost to Jones, i had a tough time being a fan of his new style, except when he would bring back the fearless Barrera into the ring.
Once he left boxing for a little bit, Morales already had that same Barrera fan base.
i went to pac jmm3 and the crowd favored jmm so i duno where your getting this
it also did 1.5mil ppv
he has 3 ppv over a million buys none of those other guys have even one
Where am i getting that from?
As i stated in the OP i have been a fan of JMM since his days of fighting at the forum and I go to Mexico all the time (still have family there) so i can tell the difference in fan base size. (which is not rocket science)
And yes the pay per view numbers for JMM vs pac are outstanding, but i think it is safe to say Pac was pulling that wagon, don't you agree?
And of course JMM had more support in those fights, but please tell me of one fight on the west coast that a Mexican vs any other nationality that the Mexican does not have the lion's share of the support.
Everyone knew how good Marquez was and his coming out part was to be on Hbo against Freddy Norwood. Yes, he had the chance to fight Hamed, but put blame on Nacho supposedly he wanted more money for his fighter. He lost in Indonisia put the blame on Nacho for accepting little pay vs the pay Manny was offering. I don't think Barrera or Morales ducked Marquez, not in there charactor.
Old Barrera handled himself well against Marquez. Too bad Marquez didn't want to get in the ring with Morales, we already know he could have got the decision vs. Maidana fighting with one eye! Imagine that Morales vs this Marquez, not an easy fight at all that is past prime Morales.
I am not sure who would have won but that would have been such a great round robin fights.

Yeah against Juarez and especially Pac 2, but he didn't hold back at all vs JMM

All the titles he's won except one (I think) have been "vacant'' titles. And he didn't win his first title for 10 years. As well, it was against a really worn-out feather fisted Manuel Medina who had about as much power as Malignaggi. He only fought Barrera shortly before Barrera retired. I think his next title was a few years later against a pretty useless Derrick "Smoke" Gainer. So up to his Pacquiao fights he'd beaten really no top fighter. The controversial "draw" with MannyP and the aftermath when they discovered the judge had scored it wrongly, gave him good publicity, but I think that also his carping mannerisms and complaints have prevented his following from growing as it might otherwise have. I think that Kid Azteca and Gaspar Ortega had a better Mexican following.
The only vacant titles he fought for were against Medina and Diaz.
1999 he fought Norwood and beat him but didn't get the decision. After that Hammed ducked him for 2 years, its not his fault no one wanted to fight him and he had to settle for Medina.

So you say. I don't know that to be fact. All I know is what happened. I don't remember Pacquiao willing to give Marquez an immediate rematch. But that was years ago.
Arum and Pacquiao tried to make an immediate rematch and offered him $750,000, which was larger than his total purses to date. He turned it down and demanded (according to BoxingScene) $1.5 mill saying that he deserved this. it wa more than MannyP was getting, so Arum let it go. It was all well reported.
Fairly soon afterwards, after a couple of fights, and then sitting around for about a year, he took a fight in Thailand against Chris John for $32,500 where he lost his title. Scott mallon the Ring reporter scored it 116-111 for John.
its because jmm didnt start getting hype till after the 1st manny fight,,
had he gotten fights with prince naseem, MAB, morales in the early 2000s we would be much more established star,,,, Much like margarito toiled in the shadows till about 2005,
guys like chavez, oscar, mab, morales, vargas, ortiz all got way more hype early on, jmm like bradley had to earn it the hard way

and whose fault is that?
who was the one that turned down 750k rematch?
same guy who refuses to grant a rematch even though he was given 3 additional fights.

It's simple really ,his fighting style. He's not a brawler like Barrera and Morales and that's what most Mexican fans want to see. It's also the reason he doesn't win fights where has to be the aggressor , it's just not the fighter he is.
Morales and Barrera are not brawler. They are boxers who can fight .

Marquez was always overrated and has an overrated resume. Pacquiao made him.
many ppl may disagree with you on this but it's true...marquez will be rememebred as the guy who gave pac his toughest fights..while pac will be remembered as the poor kid from the philippines who went on to become an 8 weight world champ (never been done before)..
outside of his fights with pac, marquez hasn't really done anything hugely memorable
he was labeled as 'boring' (watch his fight with Salido) and that turned many fans off...it wasn't until he opened up his style, along with his manny wars, that his fanbase grew
whereas El Terrible and MAB came out guns-a-blazing from the get go
True, and also I was in Mexico for the Bradley fight talking to my friends and one of them said that he does not like JMM because when he talks in interviews he seems like an "elitist" or a person not of the people, which two more of my friends agreed with him which i find interesting.

Well IMO I think that JMM, WILL give Pac the 5th fight for sure. (especially after his new found "rejuvenation" with this Memo dude)
I just think he is playing hard ball because the ball is now in his court and he is going to rape Aurm on the cost to do #5

Probably because he's made very little noise outside of his Pac fights, especially early on.
Ok he is not a brawler but he will mix it up when he has to, and to counter that Salvador Sanchez was not a brawler either. (I know when someone great dies too soon it put them on another level)
And looking at your sig El Canelo is also not a brawler but he is the biggest boxing star in Mexico. (Again I KNOW it is just because of the way he looks)
Like another poster mentioned as a featherweight he was too defensive and maybe people couldn't get over that. The Warquez years when he moved up to 130 135 and now to 147 were we see a more aggressive fighter. So maybe it was too late in his career and fans had already made up their minds on him. Again that's what I imagine is the reason Because personally he's ways been my favorite fighter. And as far as Canelo he was marketed as a ko artist and his looks. That's why most people who rarely see him fight label him as a brawler when in reality he's more of a counter puncher .
It's a tragedy when you think about it. In his prime JMM was in the shadows of Barrera and Morales. He never got the Mexican support because he wasn't that blood and guts brawler. After he fought Pacquiao he went to Indonesia to fight Chris John for 10 grand.
