Nothing about Roy's style or history suggested his time was coming so no.
Well, the first Tarver fight kinda did.
Roy struggled badly in the first fight and only showed small moments of himself, then his time was ove in the next fight.
Tarver vs Jones by far. Anyone with half a brain knew Manny's time was coming. Roy was thought to be unstoppable at the time. He wasn't getting knocked out every year by random Europeans the way he is now. He was thought to be an unbeatable god. Manny was never close to that.
Anyone with a half a brain knew Roy's time was coming too then, no?
Tarver-Jones, not even close.
Manny had been beat by Maquez before, he always gets hit a lot and he had been dropped already in that fight. Even though Roy was past his best and we now know what the weight drop did to him, at the time it was the most shocking moment I've seen live. As I said, even past his best, that was superman.
Tarver icing Roy was a lil' more shocking to me...didn't see that coming...NEVER saw Roy hurt before so that was major in my eyes
Roy looked just fine in the first round. Who would've thought that he'd be flat on his back a few minutes later?
tarver jones.
pac already got beat and was ko'd before teh marquez fight.
Roy even though he was getting hands put on him in their first fight has never really lost or even challenged before getting dropped.
Pac being laid motionless was more shocking it is not debateable. With RJJ most people thought that would happen to him if he was ever hit properly. People always questioned whether RJJ could be mentioned in the same breath as SRR as RJJ had never been hit often enough to prove his whiskers.
He had been knocked down and badly hurt by Lou De Valle with nearly the exact same punch. Turning his head to the right, taking a straight left. Recovered well though and went on to whip his arse.
Nonetheless, the Jones/Tarver KO was a bit more shocking. Roy, similar to Pac, was being talked about in the upper echelons of greatness with both at their peak in terms of hype.
It was pretty similar, but Tarver wasn't as great as Marquez, they both had great power to KO guys, but Pac had also been beaten by Marquez much clearer than Jones by Tarver.
Pac had also been knocked down numerous times before, hurt by Marquez in every single one of their fights, couple of times pretty bad (also recovered very quickly though, just like with the knockdown), and been knocked out twice before.
pacquiao has been hurt by marquez in all of their fights? that's news
first time i ever saw pacquiao wobbled by marquez was in the third from a marquez right hand, made pacquiao's leg do the "wobble"
not a cheap wobble like clocking him picture perfect with a left hook as he's a foot in the air
Everyones knows the JMM vs Pac was more shocking.
Cos not only has pac not been on the flloor for god knows how many years against bigger and harder hitters than JMM. Most people thought Pac could just stand there, let JMM hit him for free, and still not ko Pac or knock him down.
Whereas for RJJ it was more no one has hit him that is how he has avoided being decked, he had reflexes. People always wondered if RJJ could take a proper hit, whereas with Pac we know he could.
Also in previous fights it was JMM on the canvas, so anyone who claims that wasnt a bigger shock is lying.

im inclined to agree, Jones had never been touched, never been in trouble with the exception of the first fight against tarver where he had some trouble, nobody saw that coming, nobody, we have seen pacquiao take a good shot, get hit, we have also seen him on the canvas, jones jr hadnt been touched in 2 damn decades, how could we possibly see that coming?
The first Tarver fight is how you could see a Jones loss coming. Again, many assumed Jones would come back and pull a Griffin on Tarver, myself included, but that was more wishful thinking. The signs were there.
Shocking knockout, but not to the point that Marquez putting Manny Pacquiao out cold for 3 minutes is not in the discussion, where people should be assuming that anyone saying Marquez-Pacquiao 4 was more shocking "weren't following boxing then."
should have added G.Johnson vs Jones! Now that was devastating!
That was unforgetable. That is probably the worst knock out that I've ever seen. The way Roy was twitching on the gorund was scary as hell. It's sad to think about how many times Roy has been dropped since that Tarver fight.
This thread is proof that most of the children who post here have been watching boxing for about two years.

Marquez VS Pacquiao easily.
Doctors needed to use ammonia smelling salts to revive Manny.
The knock out was so vicious even Pacfans thought Manny was dead. Thank God Manny was revived.

To me both were more or less equally shocking.
I wasn't so much surprised that Pacquiao got knocked out, I was surprised by the fact that he was knocked out cold. What happened to Jones was flat out stunning as well.
tarver vs jones II knockout was more shocking
jones was at the top of his game. two fights ago he had won a heavyweight title belt and rarely ever lost a round. going into the second fight people chalked up the first fight as a bad night for roy or that he overlooked tarver people thought roy was gonna give tarver the same treatment he gave montell griffin in there rematch but tarver shocked the world
"You got any excuse tonight roy?"
Marquez has been my favorite boxer since 1996 but after the first three fight i saw Marquez land several hard shots on pac that rocked or pushed pac back or started a sequence of unanswered punches landed on pac face by Marquez giving pac himself time to recoperate. So i knew Marquez could hurt pac
Going into the 4th fight between Marquez and pac alot more journalist picked Marquez to win than they did in the third fight. probably had to do with the fact that Marquez schooled pac and got robbed in the third fight.
After 3 fights Marquez proved himself to be the better man in their rivalary and he cemented that fact in the 4th fight
tarver vs jones II > Marquez vs pac IV as far as which one was more shocking
