Eager to showcase their stable of young talent and learning from their brief forray into mixed martial arts....gbp has decided to package their product this year in a way that has set themselves apart from the competition and proving so lucrative it may carry the sport into the next generation.
Their plan is simple. In a market saturated with vegas pay per views high on promise but short on value, gbp has decided to stick with cable programming. They stacked cards with promising but little known championship level fighters and added a knockout of the night bonus for incentive to perform.
It was proven to work wonders on mexican independence day, but perfected it with last night's brooklyn card. By taking championship boxing out of vegas and on tour to some of boxing's most historically significant cities they reinvigorate interest in the sweet science, give unknown high level fighters an opportunity to shine, and bring back the buzz in innercities that boxing once enjoyed. Add cameos by hometown legends like mike tyson and you have a recipe for unprecedented success that sustains the sport for at least another generation.
Gbp should keep its world tour going. I look forward to them organizing cards in cities like detroit, paying homage to tommy hearns and james toney in the process. Or even across the pond in london with ricky hatton and lennox lewis making guest appearances.
Golden Boy needs to keep building these guys up in their home cities to make them local attractions. That keeps boxing healthy all across the country not just in Vegas.
Then after they have a regional following you can put them on the undercards of the big PPVs and perhaps have them break out to be national stars. But it has to start on the local level first, from the grassroots up.
Well thats what I think is so great about what gbp is doing. There are several fighters out there that are clearly world class talent but couldnt sell 3 tickets in their hometown because there just isnt much interest in boxing there. Guys like tim bradley and chad dawson.
So how do you fix that problem??? By giving folks a much better value for their money. Locals come for the tribute to their hometown legends and 3-4 championship fights, get exposed to their town's current crop of fighters at the same time. Which gives them an opportunity to build a fanbase.

Yep. Look at Adamek; he's no one anywhere outside of the east coast, but because of his regional following he's made a fortune and even headlined a PPV
ShoulderRoll, be careful saying Golden Boy doesn't mind putting their guys in tough fights. Remember Canyellow Alvarez is their super star. You know him the 140 lb champ who weighs 154 lbs. The guy who the vile scum at the WBC let beat up a third rate 147 lber (Hatton) for their version of the title. The guy with 5 defenses of that title that hasn't fought a top flite contender
TR builds their guys up but doesn't give the fans good fights. That's why we aren't seeing Donaire vs. Rigondeaux.
GBP doesn't mind putting their guys in tough fights. That's why we are going to see Mares vs. Moreno. Maybe that's not so good for building up undefeated records but it's great for the fans.
But isnt that why both gbp and top rank have been keeping fights in house for the most part??? Taking a cue from ufc realizing that if their star gets upset it minimalizes losses by keeping it in house and just jumping on the new bandwagon.
TR builds their guys up better
GB just tries making guys the chosen one
GB is getting a little better though
from our POV, that's great
we want quality fighters to come up and phonies to be outed
but from GB's POV, it's bad business
investing in guys who flop is a waste of time and money
they could be focusing on building up good fighters
they like picking out guys with the "it" factor and pushing them
get your guys ready to beat top names, not just fight them

Personally im a fan of baptism by fire. They can designate whatever they want but the pretenders become evident and those that pass their tests emerge as very dangerous and line themselves up for huge things.

whatever they do, they need to build fighters up the right way
stop rushing guys into the limelight trying to designate stars
just get them the right fights and let them mature at their own rate
