To contrast with the other wonderful thread...
Are there any fighters that you were a big fan of and something for some reason made you change your tune about them?
For me, its Tito Trinidad. Big fan of his through the come up and all the big wins and stardom. Then the Hopkins fight. It wasn't even about the fight itself. He took an ass whupping and sometimes that happens. Its about what happened afterwards.
He quit. He went, grabbed a quick pick me up win against a no hoper and went away, while still in his prime. He comes back, beats up on Mayorga a couple of years later and then fights Winky Wright in a dangerous fight and got beat. And what does he do? Quits again the sport, only to come back blown up just looking for a quick pay day 3 years later. Luckily, RJJ beat that ass in just a sad and depressing display of boxing and he's finally gone from the tube.
Just a spoiled guy who couldn't take losing and just quit, and I'd rather watch guys who pick themselves up after fights and soldier on.
Anyone else?
I used to love rooting for Cotto from about 2004-06. He was a young PRican fighter on the come up and was knocking out guys left and right, how could I not like him? Then he started getting hit more in his fights and kinda dissapointed me, began to get REALLY overrated by PRicans, and then I met him and he was a total prick. After that it just got worse, I saw him hanging out and drinking all the time, all the gay jokes got stupid as ****, the drama with his family, his constantly saying that he was the best boxer alive, etc. I really wanted him to lose against Margarito and since then I've truly hated the guy.
Doesn't sound very much like the quietly spoken and mannerly Cotto, you never know though I suppose.
Cotto's a prick???
In interviews, he seems real cool and like a really nice guy.
But when you watch him interract with others, it's not that far off to think he's a prick.
I met the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, one of my favorite groups of all-time hands down, at the LAX airport back in the 90's, and Anthony Kiedis, their singer, was a f**king a$$hole. I still love the Chili Peppers though, and support their music no doubt. Fame changes you, I'm sure it has to.
Any examples? not really seeing it. But yeah, it's generally said you shouldn't get too close to your heroes as you may be disappointed. Don't meet Floyd 4C! :)
funny how most started hating the fighter after his fall from grace
yeah it's disturbing how many people turned on their favourite fighter for losing or because he 'disappointed' them in the ring, loyalty eh...
Jose Luis Castillo - Could never make weight, choked in his bigger fights.
Victor Ortiz - Didn't carry himself like a true boxing professional against May.
Brandon Rios - Explanation not needed.
I still like these boxers bellow but Don't hate them just yet, but they are almost getting there...
Saul Alvarez
Amir Khan
Chris John
When I was younger and didn't know much about boxing I was pretty excited about a fellow Indo being a world champ.
Now I can't say I hate him, I still want him to succeed but the Indonesian Dragon is just like The Italian Dragon. Talented fighter but won't fight outside of his backyard.
I didn't love him, but one guy I used to have huge respect for is Lennox Lewis. He had an outstanding career and is one of, maybe even the most, technically skilled heavyweight of all time. But the way he denied Klitschko a rematch after he promised him one in the post fight interview really made me lose respect for him, particularly because I empathised with him when Riddick Bowe ducked him.
Despite his great talent and the fact that he seems to be a nice guy outside the ring, I've never been able to look at him the same.

Anyone else?Mayweather. I was one of the people who loudly touted him as being the next p4p #1 just after his corrales fight. what he does in the ring is amazing but the crap that he spews while in the spotlight embarrasses me. i don't hate him but i really don't like his character.
i use to be a fan of Ortiz too but after what he did in the mayweather fight and the way he acted after , i have started to hate the kid.
now i hope berto beat his ass
Ortiz is a arrogant prick and the biggest hypocrite in boxing today.
The **** he pulled in the floyd fight and then put all the blame on floyd is world class BS
Just looking at him makes me angry, he just looks so arrognat and full of himself.
Maidana got up from 3 knockdowns and when on to ****ed him up bad, instead of acknowledge Maidana`s awe inspiring performance he whens on to say **** like he was not himself that day or some BS while flaunting that arrogant face.
Yes I hate him and want to fight him really bad
David Haye
Great pick. I used to love David Haye, was a fan from his war with thompson to his string of sickening quick ko's afterwards. He had the personality and awesome power to become great but after he cruised to victory agaisnt valuev the fame got to him and he got boring to watch and only fought guys who he would beat. To top it off the performance against wlad was a joke and never looked to win the fight. He robbed fans of there money and reitred.
Used to love Paul Williams, but the way he acted after the Lara fight...I root for him to lose every time out now. Chavez Sr was my idol but I soured on him after the Sweet Pea fight and now as an announcer he is a straight d*ckhead. The way he panders for Sulaiman and the WbC is disgusting as well.
I used to like Arreola but it turns out he's simply a lazy a$$ heavyweight.

The more I hear people meeting Cotto the more I hear he's a prick...

Yeah, in most cases it does. The thing is, that being from PR, he will always be compared to Tito, and Tito is the nicest guy in the world. I've met him a bunch of times and he stops to talk with you, makes jokes, everything. I know everyone is different, but if there are famous boxers that are totally approachable, why do you have to be a dick? And it's not only that, I really hate how he constantly has to drink and go out. Look at Floyd - total discipline. I respect and admire that.
I use to support Miguel Cotto but after he got beat down by Margarito he used Margarito's wrapping scandal to make an excuse for his loss. I know I am going to get criticized but it was never proven that Margs cheated before the Mosely fight, so IMo he beat everyone prior to Mosely fair and square.. So **** the cry-baby Cotto!!!!
Amen.
I can't say that I hate the guy because its only his style that isn't pleasing to me but Wilfred Benetez looked great as a kid and boxed beautifully also had some good "pop" on his punches all at the tender age of 15yrs. He defeated a living legend (at the very end of his career) but still won and was on his way to become an excellant all around boxer. Some where along the line someone landed something on him and then he became a "waiter" and counter puncher and lost his early styling that was on the same par as a young Leonard and Howard Davis. I believe he was on his way to develop a solid punch because his techniques were sound but his mind got changed as so many minds do when they experience "pressure" and believe they can't over come it. To bad he was one of the most talented kids I'd ever seen at 15 to 19 yrs old. Ray.
funny how most started hating the fighter after his fall from grace
I think that's been the primary theme. Kinda sad really. I don't mind fighters losing, hell I expect it and still support it
My issue with Trinidad was just the quitting when the going got tough. Like pulling a Vince Young on your team, I can't ever respect it.
He's just telling the truth..
You'd hate Alvarez yourself if he wasn't mexican.....:lol1:
Funny u talk all this shlt about canelo being a bum and fighting nobodies
yet u praise broner as a champion,Yet hes being groomed the exact
same way as canelo.Ur a fcking hyprocite
Hate is too strong of a word, but I now pull against Paul Williams, Zab Judah, and Marco Huck in most cases. Judah used to be a favorite of mine before he fought Floyd. I also started souring on Juan Diaz after his first fight with Paulie.
