So there's a school of thought among certain groups of self defence instructors that its a horrible idea to punch in a street fight.
Reason being that while its the simplest way to hurt someone...in your average everday self defense situation outside of the gym the risk of injury is just too much. Without gloved or handwraps you're more than likely gonna break your hand or wrist. And if your hand or wrist is broken its gonna make it impossible to wrestle away a knife or gun from your attacker should the need to defend yourself against weapons arise.
Thoughts???
It really is difficult to throw a proper punch in a street fight, if you do hit someone in the face the chances are they will open their mouth and you end up getting cut knuckles. I've always found it better to take a boxing stance, feint a low kick to bring your opponent's guard down before quickly performing a solid turning kick to the unguarded head.
:lol1:
get 'em Walt!
not worth my time rizzle my fizzle.
ill let dude kick whoever he wants in the face. i think people might fight differently in different places.

Here's an idea... Don't get into street fights. I've lived in **** neighborhoods my entire life and haven't been in a single fight. Know why? It's because I'm intelligent.
And also incredibly good looking.
Well that and also because you flash your tits whenever trouble's coming your way. Lol.
:owned:
Yeah, and it doesn't even takes a full super punch to KO the other guy, just a clean punch to the chin and the fight is over, even if it's not the hardest punch you've ever thrown.
Yep, but best to try get a hard one in incase you're fighting a monster lol.
Anyone who knows how to punch properly (fast, straight and transferring full bodyweight into the punch) and gets their punch in first on the chin will win in one punch pretty much guaranteed. This isn't a joke. If you clock a guy on the chin without gloves with proper technique he's going to be properly knocked out.

If everyone were to relate what happened in the last 'street' fight they had, rather than what they think they'd do if they were in a 'street' fight then you'd get their real answer. I bet a good few people commenting hear would say they had their arms stretched out in front of them with their palms facing their aggressor as they repeatedly pleaded 'I don't want any trouble here'.
Stike with the palm and that ends that debate, Try hitting a tree with your palm I gurrauntee you don't get an injury. I've tried this theory when a Karte guy told me this and he was right.
Yeah, Luilun is correct (at least about using a palm instead of closed fist). Instructors aren't saying that punching is bad - they're saying using a closed fist is bad. If you strike with the heel of your palm, you reduce the chance of hand injury significantly.
If you know how to punch with any kind of force and you throw with closed fists in a street fight, you're inevitably going to hurt or break your hand. There is a reason why they're wrapped/gloved for boxing.

Compare the amount of times you hit an object/person to the amount of times you hit an individual in a street fight. You wear wraps in boxing because you hit an object 100s of times within 10 minutes. That would do serious damage to your hands.
In a street fight, things will usually be over after a few solid hits. It's not exactly therapeutic but you're not doing a consistent amount of work to do long time damage.
Ive been doing karate for almost 25 years and the best tactic when you get into a fight is kick/knee em in the nuts and run like hell.
Nuts only if you dont think you can outrun em
feint low right kick, feint low left kick, followed by a feint low ball kick, then a feint high left kick, feint high right kick, feint high mouth kick, feint body jab, feint head jab, feint low blow haymaker, feint round house kick then follow up with the real deal:

I cant wait for someone to come in here talking about how they just throw fireballs to protect their hands in a real fight

OP, have u ever even been in a street fight? Almost all logic and reason goes out the window when your adrenaline is pumping and you're going to throw down. If you have boxing training of course you're going to throw punches, same if you have a wrestling or some other sort of combat sport training, you're going to do what you know to spark the other guy. Crack the guy in the jaw or the temple and even if you do injure your hand, it's really likely the guy isn't getting up or he's on the ground which will allow you to take full control of the situation.
Now if somebody is coming at you with a gun or knife or his friends are going to jump in, well there's really nothing you can do but flee.
