And now everybody is urging him to retire so he won't get damaged for life. Crazy how fast time goes.
It really was like yesterday when there were all those hyped threads with people claiming Williams would spank Mayweather, Pac etc.
How were you wrong? Because he had his prime removed from him in 2 Martinez fights? I liked a 147 Pound prime Paul against any WW. He wouldve been a tough match for both which is why they both never entertained the thought.
I hate how people are laughing it up at Pauls expense its crap considering Paul gave EVERYTHING he had to the sport we love.
Because, turns out, Paul simply wasn't as good as people thought he was.
His size and output would have been an issue but looking back it wouldn't have been anything the couldn't handle. They didn't want to fight him, no one did. Not his fault.
I'm not laughing at Paul Williams' expense. Like I said, I like Paul Williams, he's a throwback fighter.
He just wasn't as good as everyone once thought.
I agree that his losses have shown everybody how to beat him, but if he had fought the other elite back when he was the next big thing, he still would have ended up like he did against Martinez, another true elite fighter.
Didn't come out right I think. I meant he would have ended up outboxed or ko'd against guys like Pac and Floyd.
this^^^^^^^^^^
at no point did I ever think Williams would/could beat Pacquiao or Floyd.
I've always said that with the way Williams drops his hands and leans forward when coming in (said this prior to the Martinez fights) that Manny would probably TKO/KO him.
It's easy to see that now.....but I saw that sh1t even back then (post Cotto and Clottey fights).
^^^^ Yup .. Paul is fun to watch.. but :boxing:

As I said in another Williams thread:
I agree to a point. Paul did look quite normal in terms of his athleticism, energy, and focus. I can't say he lost that fight because of his KO to Martinez; well, not entirely.
See, that's the only thing I disagree with- unfortunatley I don't think Lara is the only guy out there with the talent to do that to the Punished. The reason I think we can blame Sergio for this is, honestly, he made a glaring exclamation point on the sentence others had been repeating for awhile; that Paul's defense is severly lacking, he really only has the ability to keep coming forward and throwing, and his height is almost a disadvantage because he doesn't use it.
Martinez laid out a gameplan. Paul, during the build up to this fight insisted him and his trainer weren't going to change a thing; and that's true. He's showing he's a one-trick pony, at least with this guy in his corner, and that he has no plan B, or C - A is what he has and he'll come, like he said, ready to fight a tough, full 12 doing exactly what he's always done.
The difference is, in the past, lesser fighters or those without the authorotative confidence of knowing exactly what to do to beat the Punished, would let Paul get off first, walk them down, pressure them. That's the only reason his fights haven't all looked like the Lara beating.
Paul "The Punished" Williams gave me many entertaining fights and for that I respect him. He's was humble, had a great attitude in the ring and work ethic, but unfortunatley his loyalty has him keeping a trainer and style that is a failure, has been proven lacking, and I think- at this point- has already caused his downfall.
R.I.P. Paul "the Punisher" Williams. I hope you surprise me and learn some new tactics or we'll always see him as the tall, lanky guy who went to sleep with his eyes open against Maravilla, and then got his ass spanked for a few more fights before hanging 'em up.
So, yeah, he looked like he always did- I agree- painfully so, but he didn't succeed like he once had because it's really all he brings to the table.
2 years ago he hadn't been brutally KO'd.
I think people forget what a KO like that can do to you, not to mention the beating he took from Martinez in the 1st fight. His punch resistance is started to go, he got visibly rocked a few times last night.
Hope he retires healthy, he gave us some great action fights, he just wasn't the elite fighter he thought he was.
Ofcourse a lot of people ll come in here lie and say they always knew he wasnt good but whatever that kid was avoided by SVERAL fighters for a reason. He gave boxing all he had and fought literally to the last bell. Enjoy retirement you have a fan for life.
You're acting as if Paul is shot. He isn't shot, people just know how to beat him now. Like I said before Ceilings, if it makes you feel better I think Paul still runs through guys like Pavlik and Cotto. Lara was just a HORRIBLE match up for him and the fact that he was a 4-1 favorite disgusts me. Lara is far from a bum. Obviously you're right there's alot of people who now all of a sudden claim they knew Paul would lose yada yada, but I've been trolling you for a long time Ceilings. Remember, I called the Martinez TKO. It wasn't a perfect prediction but it was close. ;)

A guy that tall who doesn't fight tall at all and has 0 defense....just about anyone should have known he was not that good. Heck guys were saying he was gonna get knocked out the way he fights. Then it finally happened. I mean dude never learned from the Quintana fight smh.
It is crazy.
People thought he could beat anyone accross 147-160.
I didn't think that, but, I did think he had a chance to beat Pacquaio and Mayweather.
:lol1: How wrong was I?

We all buy the hype at one point or another. I thought Kirkland was gonna be the next Tyson and beat everybody.
The first fight I ever saw him in was the Margarito fight, and like they say, it's always about the first impression.
It is crazy.

You guys gotta remember, Pwill has a HUGE height/reach/weight advantage(10lb+ on fightnight) against everyone, its like Wlad/Vitali cutting down to LHW/CW and being unhealthy just to pick on midgets.
This guy was a few weight classes bigger than Lara & ALL his opponents and still got schooled. I said it long ago and Ill say it now, the only reason Pwill has ever won was because he kills himself to unhealthy amounts of BodyFat% so he can pick on midgets and he has a HUGE Height/Reach/Weight advantage on fight night against ALL his opponents, he needs to get a new trainer, gain 20-30lb of solid muscle mass and start doing real boxing exercizes.
Its sad when you have all the advantages and you are getting schooled then you are happy you won, but dont worry, the whole world knows Lara won. Lara's stock went up and Pwill's went down. Pwill is like Devon Alexander, needs bribed judges to win
Williams was always too flawed to beat anyone high on the P4P list...very bad defense, when he fatigues he starts slapping, comes in with his guard open, one dimensional, etc.
Makes so many mistakes and his fight strategy (if it is strategy) is ALL wrong...

I saw it after his fight against Margarito.
I've never thought ANY of this. At all.

I never thought highly of Paul. Ever.
However this is a clear example of 2 things.
1)Those saying knockout losses don't effect people are crazy.
2)Bangwagon jumpers aren't real fans. They jump on whatever's hot and down play whatever is not.
Paul Williams was a relentless beast...he was on top of my list. The problem is that people have found the way to beat him. He fights the same. People are so quick to discredit a guy
he was never that good to me
a great conditioned tall volume puncher with a long reach...but he never showed exceptional skill and the ability to adapt
"He never stops punching, people can't handle his volume output, his chin is too strong, he's too big and strong, etc."
Boxing still shows skills are the most important. But when Boxing shows something, it is in the most cruel manner possible.
