Despite Calzaghe retiring undefeated, will he really go down in history as one of the memorable all time greats? In my mind, he didn't become a star until the twilight of his career and toiled in his hometown for 90% of the time against mostly unremarkable opponents.
In 5-10 years I will remember Jones Jr. and Hopkins as greats, I don't know if Calzaghe will pop into my head, fair or not.
What are your thoughts?
Joe Calzaghe is the most accomplished British fighter of all time. It would be like Puerto Rico forgetting Felix Trinidad.
As long as Joe claims that top spot, his name will last foever. Froch is gainig on him though.
I don't think he'll be forgotten like Sven Ottke, he has a too big fanbase.
He was up against a lot of good guys during his time, he carries the worldrecord in titledefences (Almost half of his fights were titledefences), he was P4P #2 at one time, he had a unique style and retired undefeated.
Some people still don't think he did enough to call him an ATG, though, can't disrespect the opinion of another well argumentet poster, but in my opinion he did enough at SMW to be considered the greatest in that division, so surely he will be remembered. He was fair in the ring, outside the ring and seemed like a good fellow.
I think it has to be respected that he retired undefeated, even though he SHOULD have taken Dawson and Froch to seal his legacy in the eyes of the americans that first noticed him after he beat Lacy. I think he should've taken them, I am in no doubt that he would beat both men, and Froch on your resume now counts for a lot, even though the guy gets a lot of negative critisism. Dawson was supposed to be the new force in SMW, but have not shown anything noteworthy.
Could Joe retire at the point he did and be remembered as a ATG, I think so, but I can see why some people discredit his carrier endning fight against Jones.
Will he be remembered, no doubt.
I don't think he'll get the appreciation and be brought up enough in the future to what he deserves, no.
He didn't get the exposure he deserved until later in his career by the time he was fading. He's partially to blame for that, along with many other factors.
He'd have gotten a lot more recognition for beating someone like Dawson instead of Jones in his last fight.
Thing is though, Dawson was hailed as the new future best LHW and better than Calzaghe. Wasn't particularly long and he's lost, suddenly everyones not racking on about him anywhere near as much. It's an all too familiar story. Someones hyped as the clear definite better man after a few good wins, but as soon as that's exposed not to be true they're put down like a book. The opposite is true when opponents are criticised but prove they're still in good form by going on to win. It's all too convenient.
Hopkins has clearly been proven to still be a top LHW and good but close win for Calzaghe. He is still p4p years after Calzaghe has retired and arguably still the best LHW. Calzaghe, beat, that best LHW years ago. What does that tell us? He certainly deserves more credit, but yes won't get it.
Not with these fools as Ketchel here. All they see is the bums on his record, as if Hopkins and Jones have none on theirs.

You cant fool the fans or history. He tried to fight bums his whole life then got some balls when everyone was washed up. Should have tested himself earlier and beat one of the guys he beat in their primes and he would be remembered as something. I think his best win was Kessler and he was a great fighter, but wont be remembered with the all time greats because everyone knows his wins over BHOP and RJJ were tainted and he did not test himself when he could have.
When we look back at boxing, he will be remembered mostly by British fans. A lot of fans in America did'nt really know him till he fought Lacy, jones, and B-Hop, and that was at the end of his career. I think he could have come across the pond a long time ago and made himself a bigger name. But I'm sure he will be remembered.
I agree, I dont think to many people will remember him. He stayed in his own backyard for too long. He missed the boat. Even though he beat Jones and Hopkins(conserversal)late in his and their careers.
If retiring undefeated is everything talk to Floyd. Retiring undefeated doesnt mean much to me if you arent fighting the best people out there.
The word you lookin for is CONTROVERSIAL.Lol.
He's the ATG Super-Middle at this point in time.
So he'll always be known by the historians unless somebody turns out to surpass his achievements in that weight-class.
joe did his thing was exciting to watch. and made tons of money and enjoying his life while still young. i dont think he cares if people remember him or not
I think he retired at the right time. I don't think he cares either, but public perception does matter when you look back at boxing history.
