His views on Bernard Hopkins and why a fight between him and Hopkins never went done:
“The reason why the fight never happened is because he backed out. You know Bernard, he’s a good fighter. He’s not a great fighter. He’s not a Hall of Fame fighter. You know what I’m saying? A fighter like him, he’ll run. These old school fighters never run in with their heads down and hit and hold. That’s all Bernard does. He was supposed to fight me in ’04 and he decided to fight De La Hoya because I would have beaten him. Even if he had fought me at cruiserweight, he would have went from the ring straight to the morgue.”
Regarding clarification on whether he really believes Bernard Hopkins is not a future Hall of Famer:
“No, I don’t think he’s a Hall of Famer but he is going to be in the Hall of Fame. He’s not a great fighter. The way he fights, he fights scared. If you ever watched an old school fighter in the 60s and 70s, did you ever see one running in with his head down and hitting and holding besides a bum? Come on man! I’m a fight historian. I watch fights. I see how old school fighters fight and Bernard Hopkins does not fight old school. He fights old scared.”

It would of been an interesting fight, shame it didn't happen
its a real shame Toney has been a circus act the last few years.
once upon a time he was actually a good fighter...now hes fat, punch drunk, and probably an alchoholic based on the jaundice I saw in his eyes leading upon the the Couture joke of a match.
both toney and b hop are hofers!!!!! But b hops resume is great but u said u didnt like him i guess thats the reason u say that hes not hof its ur opinion so its all good
wht you talkin bout? i never said any such thing(s)
The only fight i will be interested to see of them, will be they fighting each other mma style with Pride rules.
And i would favour Hopkins he has experience clinching, i bet he could throw some nasty knees in the clinch.
I love toney ,but damn, this dude is a one trick pony when it comes to self promotion..........
we already know what he's going to say before he says it, not the exact words, obviously, because he's very colorful and no one could predict his exact words but you know what his angle is every time, discredit everyone til someone gives you a fight........... and if not, keep talking trash.
toney should drop down in weight and fight him(hopkins), but we all know that would never happen, toney will never be able to look down and see his feet or cock ever again because of his gut is too big, so i guess he can keep talking...... it seems to be the only exercise he gets, running that mouth.
and james tony falls down and chokes
:lol1:
I like James but he isn't winning this argument...I would have liked to see him and Bernard fight a long time ago...
Hopkins >>> Toney
as far as resume, skills, longevity in the sport, relevance, dedication, and ATG ranking.
Toney, fighters from the 70's didn't jump into another sport only to embarrass boxing.
I agree with Toney. I know he often talks a lot of bull, but that's just having fun. For a guy like Hopkins to be in the Hall of Fame lowers it, since he spent all his middleweight years fighting genuine 4th raters, who were nearly all only part time fighters who held down other jobs to make a living. At the time it was a standing joke amongst commentators etc. Most present fans either just don't know, or forget-with an occasional Antwun Echols thrown in.
By the way he should have been DQ on the spot in one of their fights for spinning him round and deliberately rabbit punching him, dropping him. The ref neither warned him, took a point, nor NOTHING, just waited until Echols got up and allowed the fight to continue. I've never seen anything more blatant.
AND.....Hopkins was really a dieted down Lt. Heavy, over 6' 1" tall and had a big edge on everyone he fought. AND...he always stunk out the house, even worse than Mayweather. That's why he was almost completely unknown, even when he'd been champ for 7-8 years already.
His wins were always generously helped along with really dirty and foul fighting. He must have a head like a cannonball. Not to mention laces and thumbs, as well as low blows and rabbit punches. He has them ALL.
By the way, I don't like Hopkins very much anyway.

I will always roll with Lights Out Toney. Toney should tell Shawn Merriman in the NFL to stop calling himself lights out cause he don't live up to the name.
