After the JMM vs Mayweather fight is clear that JMM does not belong anywhere past 135. JMM looked fat and sluggish at the welterweight limit, his frame is just too small.
Anyways, I say that JMM vs Cotto would be a hell of a fight, JMM's beautiful combinations and uppercuts would do some damage! Not saying JMM would beat Cotto, (so calm down pactards) but I say JMM gives him a hell of a fight and goes the full 12. Remember, Floyd is one of the best, if not the best fighter around and JMM still stood his ground and landed a few...and Cotto's defense isn't exactly the best, he eats uppercutsand rights which happen to JMM's best punches.
That fight didn't prove anything about JMM at WW outside of the fact that Mayweather was a bad matchup for him.
JMM would dissect Cotto pretty easily.
You're right about Floyd being a bad match up for JMM....Floyd is the best defensive/counter puncher in the game, JMM being the 2nd best and Floyd has made almost everyone look like crap. I bet if it was Cotto instead of Floyd JMM would have looked a lot better because Cotto would have attacked JMM and that's when JMM is dangerous.
I agree that Cotto is way too big now(154) but if the fight got made let's say at a catchweight of 145 it could be competitive. JMM weighed in at 145 fight night against Katsidis and looked damn good physically. I give JMM a chance because as I said before Cotto eats a lot of rights and uppercuts and JMM throws them very accurate. I say he can bust Cotto up and make it an interesting fight even if he loses. Remember guys I'm asking if the fight would be exciting, not who will win.
We saw in the Pacquiao fight that Cotto can't fight at anything below 147. We saw in the Mayweather fight that JMM can't fight at anything over 140lbs (he weighed in at 142lbs). Therefore such a fight will never be made.
JMM is too small and old to fight at WW, and Cotto is at 154 now.
Mismatch.
This isn't even debatable Cotto is too big.Marquez gets dropped by lightweights & smaller. He starts slow & gets caught early. When Cotto catches him early,he goes to sleep. This fight won't pass 6 rounds.
Oh come on. Good size Jr. Middle who comes in at 170 vs. a tiny lightweight? My two favorite fighters, but you can't actually say it's an appropriate fight.
I just don't think the Mayweather fight means that much because no one fights like Floyd and not that many dudes at 147 really fight tall.
Also in that fight JMM didn't get broken his will was in tact to me that shows he can hang at 147, although it is not his optimum weight (obviously).
JMM always gets caught with hooks and that is Cotto's money punch. That said JMM usually only gets caught early then gets serious about taking that away.
To me it hinges on can JMM make Cotto back up, if JMM can do that he should win if Cotto can stand his ground or come forward (for the better portion of the fight) then I would have to favor Cotto.
It would be fairly interesting though, I view JMM as a notch above Cotto but with size and JMM's weakness for hooks makes it tough to roll with the smaller man.
Yeah, they are both good boxers at their respective weight classes, but it's a mismatch. Cotto is too big and will pressure JMM and probably left hook him pretty bad. Not to diss JMM, though, he's a better boxer, but @ his own weight.
This would have been a hell of a fight when Cotto was campaigning at 140 and a much more aggressive fighter.
Cotto is way too big now and doesn't fight like he used to so the fireworks won't be as great. Total mismatch, Cotto sparks him now.
jmm doesnt apply the pressure needed to beat cotto..he would attempt to outbot cotto (which he will)but cotto will be applying the pressure and would wear jmm down
