After someone posted a thread praising Toney's performance against Iran Barkley in his 168 pound debut, the first performance that sort of mirrored the skill, precision, and speed used against a bigger, plodding opponent I thought of was Mayweather beating Arturo Gatti back in 2005.
That being said, who do you think performed better in the ring on fight night?
So I guess thats why Gotti sold out so many fights. barkley had epic battles with whom. I know about gatti but besides Duran Barkley never impressed me. Gatti fought much better competition.
Barkley fought:
Toney
Hearns*2
Nunn
Benn
Duran
Kalamby
These guys are much better than anyone Gatti fought
Iran barkley was at the end of his career and severely weight drained when he fought James "fat" Toney.
Whether or not a fighter is drained come fight night is irrelevant, its thier own fault for being in that condition.
barkley beat Duran but was robbed on the scorecards. He also holds two wins over one of the greatest of the modern era in Thomas Hearns and held three titles in three different weight classes.
I agree with this, Barkley really impressed me in that fight, it was a shame he got robbed
Toney was brilliant that night but lets not act like Barkley wasn't in serious decline at that time. He and Gatti were just punching bags at that stage of their careers.

All valid opinions. Like I said, to each their own and if I were to vote, I'd honestly pick Toney as well. I do agree Gatti's best days were behind him, and that even in his best days he wasn't that skilled as a fighter, but Floyd still put it on him something fierce.
roy jones vs. vinny pazienza
Good call, shouldn't have missed that.
Yea, lets just forget that Gatti got KOd by
Angel Manfredy.
Gatti was badly cut in that bout, Manfredy even held back due to the cut. Also Manfredy was a good boxer too, nothing wrong with losing to Manfredy.
Both great performances. Lets not act like Barkley is all that, he got beat by a fat Roberto Duran.

Barkley, I think was all that, but at the time was a little long in the tooth. He had been through most of his wars.
I meant to vote that they were both beautiful boxing displays.

Lol I knew I'd catch slack for this question at some point. The only reason I posed it is because they're both similar in the sense that both men were above the weight class they started in, going up against a supposedly bigger, stronger opponent, and both used their speed and technical brilliance to dominate their opposition.
Gatti's best days were at 130 though, and even there he wasn't that good.
Floyd was a huge favorite in that fight as well.

I think P4P a fat Duran is still better than Mickey Ward.

Toney beating Barkley was a thing of beauty......the sweet science at it's best.....Toney was an artist in the ring that night.....his fists were like the stroke of a brush from an artist.........a virtuoso performance.......
Then again.....Floyd did "step on" Gatti and delivered on his promise to finish in 6..........he stomped on Gatti..........
but i vote Toney....
Toney all day. Im one of the few who thinks Gatti should be in the HOF, but not based on skill based on his ability to deliver a performance. Gatti is more along the lines of a sparring partner for Floyd than an opponent. Corrales would have been a better example.
