o.k ill admit it, i was not a fan of pacquaio before the oscar fight and quite frankly barely heard of him. so i was just wondering did you know who pacquaio was before the oscer fight? poll coming.
I was a Pacquiao fan after his Morales fight. I'm not a "pactard" though. I appreciate all boxers. Pacquiao was very fast and he shows heart. Many are less fond of him because of his fans. I can't hate on the man for his fans. My favourite boxer currently is still Floyd Mayweather.
I've heard about him about the same time as Larry Merchant. To this day, I still remember his words:
Merchant: I have never seen him, and frankly I have never heard of him. But I've seen and heard of him now--
Lampley: --And you wanna see him again!
Merchant: And I want to see him again! (Chuckle)
Lampley: I do too!

As for me. I have always like Pac even before he fought Sigurat. Anyone who knows me, knows that I like the lower weight classes and I have always check for those guys because to me....fights in those classes is boxing at its purist state. No b.s. contract issues on fightings wanting huge paydays, no ducking or dodging, just the best fighting the best and putting on classic fight after classic fight.
My favorite fighters back then were (in the lower classes)
1. Prince Naseem Hamed
2. Erik Morales
3. Johnny Tapia
4. Manny Pacquiao
5. Mark Johnson
Now Pac wasn't my absolute favorite (just one of them) because I like Hamed the most out of all of them, but when I seen him crush Barrera the way he did (I was there live in SA) he became my favorite fighter out of everybody.
Just like right now my favorites in order
1. Manny Pacquiao
2. Vic Darchinyan
3. Vitali Klitshcko
4. Arthur Abraham
5. Koki Kameda
6. Joseph Agbecko
7. Pedro Sosa
8. Marcus Browne
While Manny is my favorite right now, I still like a bunch of other fighters, but if they start to really impress me, they will easily shoot further up my list.
yer there are alot of true pac fans but there are pac fans that have only noticed him since the DLH fight, but that was mainly because that was the first pac fight that we in britain recieved.
Here is some food for thought...
Pac has basically been a star (albeit in the lower weight classes) since 99 and has been the philippines best pro. athlete by far. If you are filipino and like sports the Pac has always been the biggest name over there. Don't you think that a country who is very prideful (like every other country) wouldn't have been following Pac for a long time.
This is why I think it's ridiculous to accuse filipino's of "Just know starting to follow Pacquiao". He has big for a while over there so for those of NSB to say that is very ignorate and foolish (accusing them becoming fans just recently)
Also Pac did huge #'s in the lower weight classes, and if you look at some of his older fights, you will see a huge filipino crowd/country flags etc in the audiance rooting Pac on. He's always had his country behind him.
Now there is no denying he has gotten bigger after the Oscar fight, but the is due to different nationalities starting to become fans of his...esp after he destroyed a lot of their national Icons.

If you haven't seen Barrera, Morales, Marquez ebfore, then you need to watch them too lol
I started watching all his fights after seeing his 1st fight w/ Barrera on tv.
Im only 13 that time.
I even became an instant fan of boxing since then. :boxing:
Pac made his first big impression in the Ledwaba fight. He'd only been on ESPN before that I can remember. But after the 1st Barrera fight, how could anyone not be a fan of the guy? Haven't missed a fight of his since then.
Who's pacquiao?

First time I heard of his name was when he beat Clottey... Am I qualified to answer this poll? :D
that was my 1st time watching dude. my cousin kept gassing him up after he beat Ledwaba. personally, i think that was the nastiest KO of pac's career(Lucero).
that was one of my favorite ko's ever. Lucero was caught and was stumbling around the ring
been a pacquiao fan even prior to his loss to torrecampo. i used to watch him in his early fights and telling myself hell go far but i have not expected this far. hes got the strength, the courage. he used to fight like ali. he doesnt cover up yet seldom clinch. but at that time at his weight he towers over the other fighters. he moves around, shuffling (like ali). he was the destroyer, the "no-fear" fighter(he was always wearing "no-fear" apparels. in was so angry at him when he lost to singsurat because he was overweight i told myself then "there goes one good filipino fighter, as usual when they already got the fame and a little money, discipline is out of the window. i thought back then its the end for pacman, hes doomed like what happened to those before him. but then again pacman is different, he rise up to the challenge and like the proverbial phoenix he rose from the ashes. it seems that episode is only to teach him a lesson and he passed it with flying colors by recovering and getting back on the winning streak again after that. pacman have already learned the bitter lessons of the past and that explains how he works so hard prior to a fight.
I have similar experience with u. I saw Pac when he was still fighting on the "Blow by Blow" program. I saw him fought 2 or 3 times in that program and the commentators were praising him so much that I thought maybe this kid is a "real deal".
Then after that I just heard the news from my friend that he lost to a Thailander and my friend was saying that maybe Pac gave that fight to the Thailander coz he already lost his belt during the weigh in.
I became a Pac believer when he beat Ledwaba. I had my doubts when he fought Barrera but after his demolition, I was officially on his bandwagon.
People here dont realize that we, Filipinos, are the biggest doubters when it comes to Filipinos in international competition. Before Pac's success, we always thought that our talent is not on a world class stage. Pac changed all of that with his rise from poverty to fame. That's why Pac is the biggest star in the Philippines because he conquered all the odds that were stacked against him.
I was keeping an eye on him and pulling for him for about five fights before the first JMM fight. I remember Jim Lampley exclaiming in the first round "MANNY PACQUIAO IS A STORM!!" Marquez did a great job the rest of that fight and got back into it, he is an absolutely great fighter in his own right. But that fight is when I really got behind Paq, I was talking to a boxing fanatic freind about it the following monday, he didnt think Marquez should have gotten a draw, but we both agreed that if Paq ever really learned how to box he could be a huge draw. And here he is.
When he KOed my stablemate Emmanuel Lucero
that was my 1st time watching dude. my cousin kept gassing him up after he beat Ledwaba. personally, i think that was the nastiest KO of pac's career(Lucero).
