A question that I'd like to see what you guys have to say. I have an opinion on it, but I'll let you guys battle it out first. A lot of people are saying Khan is going to duck Maidana, but what happens if he fights Juan Manuel Marquez next?
How is fighting a HOF'er instead of an up and comer ducking?
I really don't understand how anyone could think anything different. Plus it's a VIABLE HOF who is still beating top notch fighters. It makes no sense.
No, JMM is a better fighter in my view and obviously is a more meaningful opponent. But motherfuck Paulie Malinaggi. Khan needs to fight a guy with pop. JMM has skill and pop. The only thing that Maidana has done is beat an overhyped Victor Ortiz. But I still view him as a dangerous opponent. It's just that a win over JMM gives Khan more cred.
Why does he have to fight 2 mandatories in a row? I heard there was a mess up and Salita basically jumped the queue but surely thats on the boxing commission and not on Khan or his team. Personally I think he should be able to fight who he choses now and then be forced to fight Maidana IMO. Maybe someone has a better reason for the two mandatories in a row, I don't know the finer workings of the process.
IMHO I don't think that many of you put in Khan's position would not go for JMM before he is retired. Maidana will be around for long time to come and Khan should be forced to fight him after his next fight. It's easy to say from the comforts of your computer at home what you would do / what he should do etc. etc.
I don't have a problem at all with Khan fighting JMM then Maidana. If he does not fight Maidana after that he will go down in my estimation tho for vacating.
If a champion avoids a mandatory it is a duck . Get the mandatories out of the way and the champion can pick his fights it is not a difficult concept .
Not at all, for a couple of reasons. One being that Khan is a young fighter so right now he fights who his management team puts in front of him.
Secondly, Khan has said he wants a lot of exposure in the United States. Marquez was just on PPV in his fight with Mayweather, and 1 million homes bought that fight and even more people watched it. Not to mention, he was also on the 24/7 series so people know Marquez's background and story. Even the average casual fan knows who Marquez is now, but even some regular boxing fans would have a hard time picking out Maidana in a line-up.
Last but not least, a fight with Marquez is a much tougher fight for Khan than the fight with Maidana. Remember that styles make fights. Maidana has a lousy style, he's very wild and open to counters and if I recall correctly he hit the canvas a couple of times against V. Ortiz. Now contrast that with Marquez: a guy who won a majority of the rounds in his fights with Pacquiao, a guy who Mayweather (a welterweight) could not even knock out, a guy who just hammered Casamayor and Juan Diaz. So no, I definitely do not think it would be a duck to fight Marquez, I actually see it as a much more difficult fight.
For Khan, beating Maidana leads to a 'pat on the back' from the boxing world; beating Marquez leads to 'money in his lap' from the boxing world.
Marquez is still a good fighter above 135, and a better fighter than maidana...I can't see khan making that fight happen,, props to him if he does..but it gotta be maidana...
build up the JMM fight!
khan vs maidana: khan doesnt make ortiz's mistake and trade, wins by late TKO
JMM vs katsidis: JMM lures in the aggresive kat, KO's him in 6
Khan vs JMM: after being out quicked early on, JMM lands a left hook to wobble him, finishes khan off in 'workman-like fashion'
If you consider the impact this will have on Khan legacy-wise and money-wise, winning against marquez >>>>>> winning against maidana. Losing against a future HOF'er>>>>>>>losing against a no-namer (no disrespect to Maidana, of course)
your saying that as a fan and i could understand why hardcore fans would rather watch khan maidana for the style match up and knowing the fact that jmm is not the same fighter at above 135 not to mention his age but you have to look at it from team khans point of view that would just be stupid to turn down that kind of exposure and payday for khan just to prove to the hardcore fans you didnt duck a guy
Yes it would be extremely stupid of Team Khan to fight Maidana instead of JMM first both in business-wise and risk-wise, And if i was in Khan's position i would rather fight JMM for more money, More fame etc
A lot of other boxers in Khan's situation alway go with the money/fame etc so i wouldnt blame him if he does go the same way but it would still be a duck since maidana is the mandatory.
Okay am back, Made my mind up now, a duck IS a duck especially when the fighter you're fighting is your mandatory, The reason everyone excuse his last fight was because he had to fight salita so why not now???

But will he? I mean I understand JMM is way more marketable than Maidana but then wouldn't that still be a duck with the reason cited as: money?
i dont think so it becomes a duck if he fights a guy who doesnt bring more to the table (money or exposure) then maidana would. otherwise in my opinion it doesnt make sense for khan to turn down a fight with jmm to fight maidana when that fight could be made at a later date
I think hard core fans rather see him fight Maidana, But Kahn fighting JMM is not a duck. He would get way more money and can make it a much bigger fight and have a sure Hall of Famer on his resume.
He also happens to be the much easier fight. I don't know why so many people believe JMM has much left. Rewatch his fight against Diaz, dude couldnt move, his legs are gone. And now coming down from welterweight sure aint going to help his career last.
Kahn not fighting the no1 contender no matter who it is for his belt is a duck.
I know JMM sounds like a more dangerous fight but he is totally unproven above 135, and would now somehow be fighting a defending belt holder at 140?
thats a good point jmm hasnt show himself to be affective above lw but boxing is a buisness and if a fight with a legend is available khan would have to take that fight for money and exposure purposes and if he could get the win against jmm he can always fights maidana on a later date
i think so, Marquez is a 36 year old super featherweight, Khan a natural jr welter and future welterweight. Khan knows he will have reflex, size, reach, and age advantage on Marquez.
How is fighting a HOF'er instead of an up and comer ducking?
One could argue since Marquez got dominated by Floyd and he is a smaller lightweight compared to a hard hitting Jr.Welterweight it wouldn't be as much of a threat to Khan's fragile chin.
That's just that side, I voted no. The payoff is a lot better against Marquez, plus Marquez would school Maidana imo.
nah marquez is the bigger fight and is a more proven fighter then maidana if khan fights a guy like malignaggi who has no pop or a guy who doesnt bring much more to the table financially instead of maidana that would be a blatant duck
