..was in 1993 when Pernell Whitaker (#2) took on Julio Cesar Chavez (#1). If Mayweather vs Pacquiao happens, it'll be the second.
It rarely happens coz both fighters must be on same weight class to fight. Even the Chavez vs Whitaker fight was in a catch-weight. Floyd and Pac has been alongside in the list since 2006 and Pac was fighting in 126 lbs. 4 years later this P4P matchup is now on-process. Unbelievable really.

I think you could also make the case that when Leonard, Hearns, Hagler and Duran fought each other at one point the top two P4P fighters in the world faced off
Yeah, the only other time we came close was Roy vs. Hopkins in 2002, but they couldn't make a deal. I've hated them both for that ever since.
If this fight doesn't get made, I don't think I could ever cheer for Pac or Mayweather again.
