Outside of Kelly Pavlik, Felix Sturm, Mundine, and Winky Wright, who's in the middleweight division? I didn't include Williams, but I guess you can if you want.
Either way, 160 has traditionally been a great and very deep division. Not now.
So is middleweight the worst division in boxing currently?
its only recently been so bad
whereas heavyweight has been poor for a long time now,but with haye getting people interested again i think middleweight is high on the list of worse divisions
outside of pavlik/williams i cant think of any other fights that the majority of boxing fans would give a fukk about
There's lots of young talent at middleweight: Paul Williams, Matvey Korobov, Dmitry Pirog, Gennady Golovkin, Matthew Macklin, Daniel Jacobs, etc.
I'd say it's better than light heavyweight, with most of the fighters there getting ready to retire.
This. + Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam and Demers
Korobov, Golovkin ,Pirog & N'jikam are going to be the top four guys.
Jacobs & Lee the next best but just a step below.
Demers, Macklin, Zbik & Geale all good fighters.
In 2 years time it will be one of if not the best division in boxing.
So long as Korobov, Golovkin, N’Jikam, Pirog, & Jacobs all fighter eachother and along with Pavlik & Williams this will be a golden era for middleweight boxing.
I say at least 2 of the top 4 prospects i listed will end up being considerably better & a level above Pavlik & Williams.
Its quite sad really,as MW has a pretty rich history in the sport. I think its more than a coincidence that the SMW has just turned 20 years old and we find the MW division in the state it is in now. The jump from 160 to 175 is a big ask,but if you can get a title between that, then you can take your time coming up.
Great point. SMW is great right now, but many came from 160.

Andy Lee as well. Couple big wins from him and he'll be in contention..
The irony of the middleweight division is, 8lbs above- you have arguably the best division in boxing (smw). It's a stark contrast...
SMW isn't the best it's just the closest with a few young kids in it.
it's the same top end as 3 years ago when it was "the weakest division" because a certain welshman was the unified champ

The problem is not one of the guys you mentioned is proved at world level at 160 other than Williams. They all have the talent to do so but there are alot of steps before they reach that level.
Light Heavyweight is pretty bad 2. you look at the top 6 and you got 4 guys who should retire, Chad Dawson, and a guy who will never step foot on American soil.
LHW is picking up actually, you have Hopkins, Dawson, Cloud, Pascal and Diaconu as well as "second tier" fighters like Johnson, Tarver, Jones etc. Erdei is moving up a division so he'd not longer a LHW.
HW has also picked up there are the two Klitschkos, Haye, Arreola, Adamek, Povetkin, Chambers, Valuev, Chagaev, Boytsov and Johnson.
MW does seem to be the worst division in the more "high profile" divisions
160, 154 and CW are the worst by far. Even 175 has some potential action brewing, now that Dawson has polished off the remains of those 2 old fogies he kept having an obligation to fight.
The best division is 140.
I like 154.
I don't even consider cruiserweight in these type of discussions because it's almost always one of the worst divisions. The best that can happen is when you have a couple big names at the top. Other than that, :peeright:
Exactly. I mean Pavlik's reign has been a disgrace. Gary Lockett and Rubio in what, 2 years or something? Sturm is busy making 7 figure paydays in Germany fighting top 50 mandatories and ... well that's all I can think of for Middleweight. Worst division ever.
To me, one of the only ones to watch for is Daniel Jacobs. Kids only 22 and already is 18-0 with a nice win over Ishe Smith (not saying much, I know).

154 is ok. I mean there is Cintron, Angulo, Martinez, Santos, potentially PlasterCheato so it's not too bad.
Heavyweight is up there still but it is becoming much more interesting as of late. Middleweight just never seems to have any good fights. PWill is the one fighter that could change that, but he isn't even a full time MW. PWill and Pavlik is still an interesting fight, but beyond that there isn't much else there to get excited about.

I was just looking at the rankings. My god.
The fact that Winky Wright holds down the #9 spot on boxrec shows exactly how bad the division is.
How do you sit out for two years, come back and get your ass whooped and still manage to be in the top ten? I guess it just goes to show that no one is in that division.

A guy who will never step foot on American soil? I hope you are not talking about Pascal.
I think he's talking about Erdei, but it doesn't matter cause Erdei is moving to cruiserweight I think.
Heavyweight is the worse by a huge margin.
No, it really isn't. HW has gotten better while MW has gotten worse. Go look on boxrec at the names, terrible.
