Even with heavily-padded gloves and protected by headgear, the punches of Miguel Cotto still pack a lot of power, Cotto’s two southpaw sparring partners told the Puerto Rican press over the weekend.
Super-lightweight Kenny Abril and welter Fred Tukes told the newspaper Primera Hora that Cotto, who will be facing Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 14 at the mgm grand in Las Vegas, has been superb and awesome in their sparring session at the Fight Factory Gym in Tampa, Florida, and that they both wonder if the Filipino can withstand the impact of Cotto’s punches.
"Miguel hits like a mule," said Abril, a New Yorker who has Puerto Rican lineage. "Even with 18 oz gloves and head gear, we can still feel his blows. I just could imagive what the effect would be on Pacquiao."
The 12-round clash between Pacquiao and Cotto will feature the use of 8 oz gloves.
Aside from Cotto’s tremendous power, Abril revealed that Cotto has shown vast improvements in lateral movement and precision-punching that Pacquiao will be in for a big surprise come fight night.
Both Abril (9-3-1 with five KOs) and Tukes (7-1-1 with five KOs) are lefties like Pacquiao but are relatively inexperienced.
Cotto, 29, is now headed for Las Vegas and his team is scheduled to arrive in Sin City on Sunday afternoon but is likewise expected to host an open media workout at the Pound-For-Pound Gym in Los Angeles on Tuesday noon.
Pacquiao, 30, is the prohibitive favorite in what is being hailed by aficionados as a fight that has all the trappings of a classic.
the idea that pacquiao will be able to take Cotto's punches is ludicrous
Why is it ludicrous? Just saying what you just said is what's ludicrous.
Marquez took Floyds power at 147 all night long, and Floyd punches as hard as Cotto. He just doesn't bother to put together combinations.
If you think Cotto is gonna roll over Pac you won't be here the day after the fight.
Manny has definitely improved as a boxer as far as balance when throwing combinations and being more tidy with his punches, but the truth is he was never hard to hit and Cotto is gonna hit him harder than he's ever been hit before.
this needs to be re quoted continuously until nov. 14
War cotto!!:boxing:
Hits like a mule huh? I guess that means Mosley hits like a horse. In fact I didn't know mules even hit.
Let's be honest. Cotto is not a 1 punch knockout person and he doesn't hit like an animal.
Who was the last person Cotto knocked out with 1 punch or even stunned? Quintana?
I agree, Cotto has power and pillows or not, 18oz gloves add alot of weight and momentum to a punch. Why is anyone suprised a super lightweight thinks a WW punches hard?
actually is the other way around, the added weight slows down the punch and therefore less power is transfered.
To be fair, Roach's credential far exceed Cotto's sparmates.
That may be true but Roach has to have someone write it down for him or he'll forget because of all the shots he's taken in his career in boxing! :twak:
thats all good but hes going to struggle to get good clean shots off on pacquiao, hes too quick and movement is too good and clever these days

title should be..
Sparmates: Cotto moves like a mule..
GTFOH..! :boxing:
Seriously though, Cotto is a warrior, tough as nails. I'm sure he hits hard as hell, but movement/speed will be key.
pacman doesnt have the boxing skill malignaggin or zab have.

Added "weight and momentum"??.... LOL, you have never boxed or sparred my friend... Please STFU!
Cotto does hit dam hard, he doesnt have snappy shots, but he has very heavy hands like roberto duran, the just wear you down and hurt with every punch. I still dont think manny will be able to take these punches. If i remember he was feeling the power of marquez in there second fight, imagine cotto hitting him?? he'd get put to sleep.
