Hi there I am a huge boxing fan now since I have been boxing for almost 2 years.
Initially I wanted to learn mma so I went to a local mma school that had a boxing program and then from there I felt like boxing is cleaner and more evovled in terms of style movement and etc...
Anyway overtime boxing has grew on me I still like mma but I LOVE boxing.
My favorites are Roy Jones, Floyd Mayweather and I like zab and Pernell too.
But as a Orthdox I can relate to jones and mayweather. Anyway hopefuly I wont get shit for this thread since few years ago I made a thread on an mma forum and the response was "STFU" or "GTFO" I'm not sure what to expect in the boxing community but definitely I look forward to talk some boxing and would love to hear how many of you guys box.
You're an idiot. He's talking about as a sport. What makes boxing boxing is the rules. Otherwise it's just a fight. Boxing has been a sport for maybe 200years at most while wrestling has been around since 3,000B.C.
Until you travel back in time and give me real evidence then i don't believe a word. You will never know if boxing wasn't an organized sport hundred's of thousands of years ago just like you'll never know when wrestling became a sport.
I never said it was I said it was MAINLY. The majority of the participants were Greek because only Greeks could compete. Pankration was a Greek Olympic/Panhellenic Sport, "Neither women nor non-Greeks were allowed to participate, except for very occasional later exceptions, such as the Roman emperor Nero."
It still doesn't change my point of it being a predecessor to MMA.
As far as spartans: "The Spartans did not participate in the Pankration or boxing events at such festivals, but only the wrestling tournament (where three falls in each match were needed for a victory, and the Spartans believed that you did not concede defeat in such a manner, i.e. having your back touch the floor)."
No sir. It does not change your point about it being a predecessor to mma. You're absolutely right.
But there were records of spartans competing in pankration and preffered death by choke or broken neck rather than concede defeat.
Pankration is being ressurected today now that they've re-discovered it's history. But Pankration today is virtually indistinguishable from modern mma.
And no pankration was not limited to greek boxing and wrestling. It just so happened that the majority of participants were Greeks and thats what they were versed in. While matches themselves were not fights to the death...the overwhelming majority of fighters being spartan preferred being choked to death than shame themselves by submitting. Those that did submit were later either stoned to death for cowardice or killed themselves rather than living in shame.

I also occassionally watch MMA. There is also technical wizardry in grappling, but when a good MMA match goes head to head with a good boxing match, it's no contest, boxing is definitely more exciting to watch.

Yes we will, Pankration mainly was a blend of Greek Boxing and Wrestling, "is a martial arts sport introduced to the Greek Olympic Games in 648 BC and founded as a blend of boxing and wrestling." And you don't have to fight to the death either.
"The contest itself usually continued uninterrupted until one of the combatants was submitted, which was often signalled by the submitted contestant raising his index finger. The judges appear, however, to have had the right to stop a contest under certain conditions and award the victory to one of the two athletes; they could also declare the contest a tie."
Thats like saying Vale Tudo wasn't a form or predecessor of MMA. Pankration is still alive btw.

That's if you believe the hype. Pankration is about as much of an artform as MMA. It's just simply the name of the contest of 2 guys pretty much fighting to the death. Nothing more, nothing less. It isnt and was never a discipline in itself and we'll never know exactly what artform of fighting the most dominant fighters in pankration thousands of years ago actually used. For all we know there could have been dudes dominating with nothing but tae kwon do.

Modern boxing maybe, but it has been an olympic sport since 688 B.C. :D. Wrestling was a sport since 704 B.C.
Both these Ancient Greek/Roman sports gave birth to Pankration, the predecessor to MMA in 648 BC :boxing:.
I as well, I think most combat sports are interesting.

In all fairness I still like mma and I have nothing againts it. But the thing is its not evolved and I am not sure if it will.
I mean think about it boxing gyms have sponsors so you don't have to pay shit loads of money to learn how to box and the trainers don't need to worry about the business side of things since there is sponsors and you can focus on your skills/
Mma schools are business oriented and its hard to learn all of it since Gracie jujitsu itself is like 140 dollars a month and the mma school that I went to had this gentlemen who was renting out space morning class at the time and his prices was fair but the mma classes where like $225!!!! a month.
But for most part boxing gyms are 20 dollars a month in comparing to 225 mma which chances are the teacher knows half-ass martial arts and if your charging people so much money then you end up working and losing training time and it weeds out lots of prospects who may not be financially equipped thus makes mma less evolved in terms of nurturing a potential fighter or so forth...
Anyway personally now a days I box and I know few family friends that do judo/wrestling and its a good clinch strength practice and it can be fun the stand up grappling. But no disrespect to ground guys though just not my thing...
MMA is costly but not just MMA, traditional martial arts schools are costly as well such as Karate, Sambo, etc.

I agree but I appreciate both sports. I prefer to watch boxing but I prefer to practice MMA. I've grown up with an endless curiosity for all martial arts and I like how modern MMA has embraced the "take the best" mentality that were ideals of my two favorite modern martial artists (Inosanto, Lee)
To me, boxing is a type of martial arts, limited art form that has been refined for sport and spectatorship. MMA is less refined and more brutal as it has more emphasis on real life combat, not sport.

Actually the Romans had their own version of boxing, but it was a rather different sport, instead of a ring the contestants were forced to fight between two poles so there was no lateral movement and they didn't have much depth to move in.
Instead of gloves they strapped leather belts around their wrists that would strip the skin off of their opponants face if used right.
And modern Greco-roman wrestling was a sport created for the modern olympics with only passing resemeblance to the true Wrestling styles of the time.
Pankration how ever is essentially MMA and dates back to the Greek Olympics.
Wrestling the sport has been around longer than boxing the sport. 2 people punching doesn't mean its boxing.

i doubt that very much, Your saying two "people" started wrestling each other and then never threw any punches at one another for many years after wrestling?. Your comment is ridiculous, no human on the planet can be sure when saying "grappling has been around way longer than boxing". For all you know two men may have had an argument 2million years ago and traded blows that is boxing and therefore came before grappling however it could be the other way around but, either way your comment is stupid and ignorant.

Cool, whatever you enjoy... but if you love Boxing like you say you do you could relate to all of us, all of us guys are Boxing fans first regardless of who our favorite fighters are! :fing02:
That's a ridiculous statement. Grappling has been around a lot longer than boxing. Do you know what Greco-Roman is? Both sports are great. They both offer different forms of fighting and are exciting and very technical.
