We all know about the classics.
"Marvelous" Marvin Hagler
"Hands of Stone" Roberto Duran
"Sweet Pea" Pernell Whitaker
etc
etc
etc
But it seems like either the well has dried up some or noone has really had the imagination or motivation to come up with new creative monikers in boxing.
Lately i've been watching some MMA and noticed that whether they're relevant to the division they're fighting in or not....some of these guys have some really creative monikers.
George "Rush" St Pierre
"The Prodigy" BJ Penn
Ryan "Darth" Bader
Can anyone list some boxers with some really good monikers today or elaborate on why there is a lack of them in boxing lately?
I already did. I noticed people who like Margarito are starting to call him "Dr. Doom". I made it up for him. Like the comic book character, is where I got it from. Iron Chin and spells doom for his opponents.
Well that doesnt count because it didnt exactly catch on to the point where he actually became tagged and introduced before fights as dr. doom.
Well i feel we as fans need to be more creative and give our favorite fighters original monikers instead of taking from the pool of recycled monikers that have been used over and over throughout boxing history.

Every time I hear that it makes me smile. Dan Henderson is awesome.
The boxing moniker I like the most though is Steve Cunningham's. Even though it's just "U.S.S." it makes his last name sound like it's part of the nickname. "U.S.S. Cunningham" Like a Naval battleship or something.

yup. or "rampage" or "the axe murderer" or "hollywood" or "minotaur".

Which is why i made this thread. I've been watching some mma lately. Whether or not the fighter sucks some of those guys have some really amusing and original nicknames.
Like "The Russian Experiment" ?
or
"The Fireball Kid"?
yup, thats another one that got stolen. i think if a great figther or athlete possessed that nickname it shouldnt be used. especially the nickname flash b/c before pacquiao came he was considered the greatest filipino boxer.
it doesnt really matter these days. everybody lacks originality in terms of nickname & everybody uses old nicknames
doesnt make it right tho.

Nonito's is the Filipino Flash though. It makes sense because his brother is the Filipino Bomber. It makes it sound like something special. Just dope ass nicknames.
Didn't Hearns have "Hitman"?
Yea...or Motor City Cobra...lol
i hate boxers or athletes in general who steal already taken nicknames;
flash (elorde)
nigerian nightmare (okoye)
dream (hakeem)
raging bull (lamotta)
sugar (robinson)
boom boom (mancini)
cobra (hearns)
all these nicknames are already taken & yet are still being re used by todays fighters.
not right.

Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather (Money Mayweather aint too creative)
Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins
Bad Intentions aint bad although Jermain hasn't shown that much in his recent fights...
Real Deal Holyfield always sounded good...
Kid Dynamite
El matador
El terrible
Manos de piedra
Manos de piedra and el terrible are some of the classics we all know of. Kid dynamite and el matador though are monikers that have been recycled over and over throughout boxing's history.
