Your guys thought about this? 7th world title in 7 weight classes would be absolutely astonishing. World titles from 112-147. His resume is amazing. Consistently fought the best fighters. I mean he will have done what NO other fighter has done in HISTORY. Step back & think about this.
No flaming but as a comparison fans have wanted PBF/Cotto since 2006 - Mayweather gave us many a reason for this fight not to happen and retired. What fans wanted from PBF in 3 years got from Pacman in 3 months. He's a fan's fighter, a true throwback.
You add in his story and political influence & his rise/superstardom in boxing today and I ask you where does he rank all time?
For me, top 20 without a doubt.
The historical signifigance is this is the fight where bob arum took two of his biggest stars and pit them against each other against all logic so that he could pocket a huge amount of money with two ethnic fanbases.
There is no real reason for this fight. Of course when it happens depending on who wins the historical signifigance greatly depends on how the fight plays out. In reality, this is a lose lose situation for cotto. If cotto blasts pac, what could he really say? "i beat a blown up featherweight". This fight is purely an advantage for pac because he doesnt lose anything by fighting this fight.
Nobody was calling for this fight under the rumours of a potential fight began. The buildup on this fight is really artificial, about as artificial as mayweather/jmm, a fight nobody really called for nor cared to see.
Everyone is talking about how great pac is for taking this fight, but it really comes down to him having access to cotto because they are under the same promotional umbrella. I just dont see why everyone is excited about this one. None of the matches, sept19th, nor this one do anything but hype up the two a-side fighters to fight each other, the historical signifigance is basically that.
Paper champions are paper champions and beating them doesn't mean that much. Miguel is a good fighter though so will give him credit for beating them man not taking his strap (reverse of the fight with Hatton where he took the real belt but against a somewhat leser opponent so he gets credit for the belt well beyond the man he beat).

Interesting thing about this is that haters on both sides discredit a possible accomplishment. That would be amazing if Manny could do that. I keep adding "I want Cotto to win" lest I be challenged for duplicity. I like both fighters a lot, and if Manny wins it will truly make him an atg, imo. He really is impressive as hell.
True. But I really think Mosley is a bigger threat to Pac as of now, he could age overnight, though. Both fights are tough, I just think the Mosley fight is tougher.
that's the thing. i think mosley is a very tough cookie but if pac wins it, we'll only get excuses that he aged overnight and pac wont get the credit as much against a younger prime cotto.

Yeah, it would be more significant if Pac fought and beat Mosely, who is the closest thing to a lineal champ at WW, right now.
Really? So fighting the younger guy who beat Mosley isn't as signifigant? I think either fight is the exact same. If anything fighting Mosley and winning leaves you open to the Shane is too old stuff.
Big win cuz he got no business at WW. But fukk givin him an exact spot on the ATG list. I don't get why cats talk about that shit unless they keep their own constantly updated personal rankings.
You're right hard to pick a number, but not asking for a specific one. For me it's top 20 no doubt.
he won 4 lineal titles in 4 weight classes, something no other man has done.
The belts are a nice bonus too, but it's all about the lineal crowns.
The belts are only signifigant here for me since nobody has won 7. Lineals are what it's about, but there isn't really a lineal WW champ right now. You can make a legit claim for Mosley and for Cotto.

Winning a major title in 7 divisions is amazing. I don't know enough about the guys he beat to win titles at flyweight and super bantamweight, but he beat the best at featherweight, junior lightweight, and junior welterweight. David Diaz was a legit title holder at lightweight with only one loss going into the Pacquiao fight. Miguel Cotto can easily be argued as the best welterweight in the world, as it is between himself and Mosley, who he did beat.
I know you're a big fan so I'm not gonna argue w/ you.
But to me all these titles don't mean much.
He's a good fighter though.
Think about this, Mayweather always brags about this "multi-division" stuff but nobody really buys it since it was clear he picked Baldomir because he was the easiest way to another "title"..
Might fool casual fans, but not real ones.
I just think he's great for the sport so it's hard not to be a fan. I see your point about titles not meaning much, but doing something with titles that no one before you has done will probably draw more attention.
So then forget the belts, but beating a legit 145lb Cotto what does that do historically? Im thinking in the context of his career, keeping in mind 1 year ago people were laughing at this fight saying it would be suicidal for Manny...
Thats if you believe he really won the LW title.
David Diaz was a paper champion.
Well let's take away Oscars MW title then, he's still got the most in history.
