It was good on their part. The fight will cost a lot of money to broadcast with flying a whole team to Germany, plus it won't be aired at a great time in the US, around 5 pm et, and it's sure to be a snoozer.
ESPN Classic is available in more homes, more people will have the opportunity to see the fight. It's a good thing imo.
no offense anyone but what makes arreola's fights so entertaining? he's the most sloppy person I have seen in a long time(that comes to mind right now atleast)
the way i see is that i will save 12 bux this month by not having to order hbo cause espn is free so thats one good things outa the situation, the omnly difference is that espn doesnt show complete ring walks and they show commercials in between rds, thats gay
Because they paid for Wlad/Haye and when that was called off they passed on paying a big fee for another Wlad fight that might not produce much fireworks or ratings.
I think HBO did the right thing and the fans will still get to see it on ESPN classic plus that money saved will go into a better fight hopefully.
I've read they lost money televising Dawson-Tarver II, but did better on Cotto-Clottey.
Surely Wladimir-Chagaev is more worthwhile than Dawson-Tarver II, which was fought in front of mostly empty seats in a much smaller venue.
Everybody I know is watching Wladimir on Saturday here in Vancouver on TSN2, but no one had any interest at all in Dawson-Tarver.
Maybe Ross Greenburg doesn't want to show fights involving two East European boxers? Chagaev is unknown in the US, but so is Haye.
Maybe they thought Haye would have been an impressive early KO win for Wlad on HBO, but Chagaev will likely be a difficult, more tactical fight.
They probably want him to get KTFO, so you will STFU talking about him.
The question is...why would HBO want to spend millions of dollars and receive poor ratings in return? You have 2 boring fighters, HBO is an american broadcasting company and you have 2 european fighters, one is not that known, the other is not known, the fight is in germany, and the fight would be shown live during the afternoon.
Also I forgot, who's on the undercard? probably unknown europeans, they should of stuck a couple of yank prospects in there, that would of helped
HBO Sat Night does not televise undercards usually.
I understand your point, but Chagaev is honestly provably better than Arreola and Haye, at least at this point. I like Haye's boxing (though not his talking) and really liked Arreola's recent fights. Chagaev's fights, that I have seen, were equally as entertaining; moreover, Chagaev is the true WBA HW champion (not the ridiculous Valuev), who has an extremely good record at HW.
Chagaev is not the same fighter he was before his injury. I would really take Arreola and Haye over him at this point. I'd be very surprised if Wlad doesn't win easily.
b/c ring mag or not, no1 will tune in, especially on a saturday night, to watch this boring ass HW fight.....i'm sure HBO decided reruns of the Sopranos, the Wire, or Hot Springs Hotel would fare better.......
saturday night... not quite... it is going to be 5pm ET

You know what... f**k it i'ma watch it, but if it's not a good fight then i'ma be pissed at you lol
... I will unsubscribe HBO .... what a bunch of bozos...

To give you just a real straight answer, "no one wants to see that shit".... The only heavyweight fights I want to see have to involve two of the following: Wlad, Vitali, Chis Arreola, David Hay... If two of those four are not fighting each other then the majority doesnt give a flying **** about see the fight

Who cares? They saved the license fee and can now afford two more good BAD cards or something...or another fight like Cotto-Clottey. The fight is on TV here in the U.S. regardless...everyone wins.
Because they were expecting Wlad-Haye and if that fight was never on the table they wouldn't have set the bar so high in expectation. They wanted Wlad to wait for his injury to heal. If Wlad-Chagaev was announced originally and Haye was fighting someone else, they would have grabbed this fight.
I am not sure about this argument, since they televised Klitshcko-Rahman which was 100 times less interesting/profitable....
I'm from Australia so I'm not overly familiar with how it all works over there, but might it have something to do with the Broadcasting fee?
They probably assessed likley demand and determined that it wasn't a profitable operation.
