How come these two have never been compared. I swear, Pacquiao looks just like Duran "style wise" when fighting. Besides the fact that Duran is orthodox and Pacquiao is southpaw. They fight eerily similar. They both have that hop that they do, they both throw punches kinda the same. Its odd, watch Roberto Duran at lightweight and then watch Pacquiao-JMM or something recent not back when he was 16. They fight the same but with different stances. Watch Duran fight but with the intent to compare him to Pacquiao, its a way better comparison than Pacquiao-Armstrong, in my opinion.
I bring it up because I dont think the comparison has ever been made even thoughI think its the best comparison with Pacquiao to a retired atg.
Trust me, Im not making him out to be this huge monster. Im just saying that he was a very comfortable fighter at pretty much all the weights he went to. He was pretty true in size at all the weights he went to, atleast until he got up very high. He wasnt undersized in any way. He was a very hefty built, solid rock even at 154. Im sure he came into the ring easily at over 160 pounds for those fights while still being super fast, strong, and basically looking exactly like a JrMW. He looks clearly bigger than Spinks, Lattimore, Martinez, Shane, and so on
Man, what are you looking at? He looks overweight, slow, and it looks as though that weight that he is carrying is well and truly too much. It stops everything he used to do well at the lower weights he was at.
It would be like Mayweather moving up to MW. He would still be great but he would obviously be too small for it.
What about Toney? Does he suit cruiserweight or heavyweight? Of course he doesn't! He's small and fat but his skills enable him to still fight well. Same thing. Even more so in Duran's case. The simple fact is he was never a big LW, at all, in any way. He was bigger framed than any of his opponents nor was he taller with a longer reach.
I realise you are talking about his general size but he wasn't bigger in any way shape or form than anyone after LW. Try watching his fights. Go watch his fight with Buchanan. Explain how he is bigger than him?
Edit: For that bold section, that is plain rubbish. His first few fights at that weight, he was so slow and off balance because of the weight he had he looked like a damn fool. You've obviously only seen some of his fights where he trained so much that he was able to overcome that, as any fighter would. The fact is though that he was absolutely shocking at those weights compared to what he should have been like.
What are you talkin about? I hate it when people on here talk like you. All you guys talk about is height & length. That dont mean shit. Look at Paul Williams & Mike Tyson. You tell me who is bigger. If you think Floyd is bigger than Duran then you are crazy. Duran was huge. Just because he wasnt 5'10 doesnt mean that he was a small guy. Cotto is shorter and has shorter arms than Floyd also but who is clearly bigger? That means nothing. I have a ton of Duran fights and even at 154 dude was big and super strong. Stop trying to play him like he's a small guy. No way a small guy beats SRL. He was always a naturaly bigger guy. Off the top of my head right now I cant e even think of a single 154 pounder right now who is bigger then he was. Stop talking about height and reach like that is the most important. The most important thing is natural weight and Duran had it.
Yeeeeeah, and have you ever seen any of his LW fights? He was neither taller or bigger than his opponents. Until he got past thirty and got fat, he was thin and small. He always had a small frame, but he was fat as hell and kept getting fatter. He was never big. If Mayeather put on a stack of weight, he would be way bigger than Duran as well. Trying looking at their fights when he was all through his twenties.
Look mate, go have a look at Erik Morales. Was he huge? No, he wasn't was he? Ok then, go look at him now. He's huge now! If he moved up to WW that is the same thing as if Duran had moved up like that.
No matter what you think, name one fighter today at MW that is only 5 6"? They're all over six foot! They were all that size when Duran was fighting them as well.
Duran was a big and strong guy, but he just scaled well. He was never big for his weight class.

Man, that's ridiculous. Duran was never bigger than any of his LW opponents and was, in fact, often smaller than them. He is the same size as Pac.
Or, if you want to look at it like this: Leonard had a nearly ten inch reach advantage, and four inch height advantage. Duran was always a small guy and after leaving LW was never bigger than an opponent, quite literally. All of his opponents after LW were a lot bigger than him.
Duran is fat, very fat in fact, not huge. He is no bigger than any LW that's fighting today. Mayweather started at 130 and he is considered a small WW today and yet he is a lot bigger than Duran ever was! Two inches taller and a six inch reach advantage! Aren't you one of the guys that always says that Mayweather's a tiny WW and too small? He's a hell of a lot bigger than Duran ever was.
Mayweather was 5 8", with a 72" reach! Duran was 5 6" with a 66" reach (some records list him as 5 6" 1/2 or even 5 7" but his exact height is 5 6"). That's pretty small for a huge 'fake' little guy. So, if he's a fake little guy that is actually huge how do you figure that when he was fighting Leonard who was a shite load bigger at just WW or Barkley, who at MW was 6 1" with a 74" reach! and everyone in between like Moore, who was similar to Leonard, Hagler, Hearns etc etc. All way bigger!
What about his main LW opponent Ken Buchanan? He was over 5 7" with a 70" reach. That's a decent amount bigger. 'Fake' little guy my arse! He was genuinely a small guy that was just damn good. Try watching his LW fights before he started eating and partying like a massive fat arse bastard, because he is small. Naturally small.
Or, if he is actually really big, find one WW today that is only 5 6" with a 66" reach. I think you'll find most guys above bantamweight are about the same size as him which was where he started. Small guy, not big.
I can understand the Pac thing because he's rarely been smaller than an opponent apart from Oscar, but Duran, no.

Duran was pretty one dimensional in his early years to. By the time he was a WW he was a very, very well rounded fighter.
Name one fight in which he shows he is one dimensional from his LW days? One fight. If you think he was one dimensional, you haven't see him. Early on he was still highly versatile. Very crazy and overly wild too, but still very versatile. Check out his right overhand counters against Buchanan over the jab. That shite doesn't come from a one dimensional fighter. Or his fight with Hec Thompson. He uses every punch in the book.
I compare them all the time when I say that Pac is a fake little guy like Duran. They get credit for jumping all these weights when in reality they were never little guys anyways. They just killed themselves to make weight and thats why Duran is huge now. Both guys shouldve never been fighting at those lower weights but they tried to go down as far as possible to get a big advantage.
O

As for fighting, the 2 arent really anything alike. Pac was seen as one demensional until very recently while alot of people think Duran is one of the most complete fighters and great boxers of all time. His D was all time elite and he could throw a variety of punches with his O
Duran was pretty one dimensional in his early years to. By the time he was a WW he was a very, very well rounded fighter.
the only similarity is the wide stance and the sort of leaping in while the opponent is withdrawing his punch ability. This sort of gives that impression that you see when Duran lands a hard to reach punch, much like Pacquiao.
Other than that, Pacquiao kinda fights his own way - like a mongoose.

Two different animals, but they are both animals in the ring. That is how I compare them. Both of them want to tear your head off. Manny will apologize afterwards, while Duran would push or spit on his opponent after the fight!hehe
Although they are so different, Manny gives you that Duran "feel" in the ring. Same as Tyson did. Tyson was cut from the same mold they were cut from. It is a rare killer instinct where I honestly believe that none of those 3, want nothing but pure blood and mayhem once the first bell rings. It is an old school brutality type of thing. Manny has some of that.
There have been many Mexicans that give the same feel also. First and foremost in my mind was Barrera
the old, fat & way over the hill duran was still good enuf to beat sum1 like jorge castro & regardless of what the judges saw, hector camacho...
Yeah that second fight was a bad, bad decision. I think they just wanted Duran to give it in so they gave it to the guy that was still fighting and reasonably young....well, comparatively anyway. :lol1:
of course he's not duran. no one or at least im not claiming to think pacquiao is duran or better but u have to be blind not to think there are no similarities.
Kobe is no michael jordan but u have to admit there are so many similarities.
I do admit that duran is the better fighter technically. but Pacquiao trumps him in arsenal of punches.
No, no, no. Duran was so good because of his arsenal of punches and his defense in throwing them. Straight rights, hooks, uppercuts, body punching, leads, and counters, he did them all perfectly. Pac is great but the one thing he doesn't have is the technical skill and range of punches that Duran had. Pac has only just started using a good right hook recently and before that he was a one trick pony.
Pac is still reasonably limited in what he throws, but he throws those punches very well. The reason Duran was able to fight guys twice his size was because he could do so much. Box from the outside with a good jab and counters etc, fight on the inside with short range hooks and uppercuts etc, and just stand and trade with power shots.
I think he meant how much they both moved up. Duran started at super bantamweight or 122 pounds and moved up to LHW, whereas Pac started at 106 and moved up to WW. Similar. They still fight completely different though.
Someone said Duran was a slow, conventional fighter. I agree that he was conventional but he was anything but slow. The old, fat Duran after WW was slow, but the LW was very fast. Not slow by any means. He was actually one of the fastest fighters around at that time. Check out De Jesus 1 for a good example of his speed. If that's slow, then there isn't really anyone that you could consider fast apart from maybe prime Jones Jr, Leonard etc.

Duran and Pacquiao Weight class movement is nothing alike. Duran started at light WW and got to LH and Paquiao started at SW and got to WW.
