Dan Goossen, promoter for unbeaten Riverside fighter Chris Arreola, said, "Chris isn't in the type of shape you need to be for fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world. One thing you don't do with elite athletes is give them a short window to prepare."
Goossen, however, did say that veteran heavyweight James Toney "is in shape right now" and has let people close to the Klitschko camp know that he could be ready to fight by June 20.
Toney's been calling the Klitchkos out since Toney beat Rydell Booker back in 2004. If the Klitchkos thought Toney was easy game then they should have signed the contract. The Klitchkos are doing what Jirov did to Toney by ducking him for the last 5 years.
Wlad wanted and offered to fight Toney in 2005 but Toney wanted more money and he CHOSE to fight Ruiz instead and got a NC for taking steroids. Toney ducked Wlad, and looked terrible in every fight since, making a Wlad/Toney fight pointless...
James Toney 3 or 4 years ago would give Wlad a tough fight and go the distance, but still lose. Toney then was really crafty and had some speed and great defense.
The Toney of today would get pummeled and would not go the distance.

As a heavyweight, he stopped Evander Holyfield, schooled Guinn, Booker and most of all John Ruiz; those are good heavyweights. He even schooled Sam peter the first time.
I know Toney is shot, but i'm still excited about a fight between him and Wlad. That would be a great fight, especially because Toney ai'nt afraid of no man in earth, he wouldn't come to take a big payday and give up.
Toney ain't no Rahman, Gomez or Lamon Brewster.
In the Oquendo fight, i think he looked good the first four rounds. If he can do that for 12 rounds against Klitschko, he could give him a good run for his money.
Holy was clearly shot in that Toney fight IMO and also had an injury. Toney didn't look good against either Peter or Ruiz, who is as average as they come. The last time Toney looked like a great fighter was against Jirov over 6 years ago. He hasn't looked good or been in shape since.
I agree that Toney would not be afraid of Wlad and give it his all, but there's just no way for him to overcome the size and power difference and Wlad is probably also faster at this point. Wlad would not allow Toney to get inside and would jab him and sit down on his straight rights when James got tired and tried to get inside. If JT tried to lay on the ropes it would be target practice for WK.
Now have heard it all, James Toney is in better shape than Arreola??? Arreola just fought in april and he recently brought in a dietrician to look after his weight...But he isnt shape???
actually he just started training two days ago with his new conditioning coach Daryl Hudson and his trainer Henry Ramirez says it's going well.
Wlad would dominate ANY version of Toney with his jab alone. Toney should be a last option since he's almost completely shot and he was never a good HW anyway.
i dont think toney would be too bad at all....be interesting to see how his defence would cope against kiltscko's defence....give him one last chance to make history
I think Arreola truly wants to get in good shape, he has been 230-240 in the past. He probably doesn't want to waste his shot at the title on a short notice because he still has a future in the sport and will surely get another chance someday.
Toney on the other hand is in the gym all the time but rarely does any serious training these days, so he is probably as in shape as he ever will be right now. It'd be his last chance.
That makes two of us. It would break my heart to watch Toney get his ass flattened for the first time. Even at this stage of his career where it's very likely.
I never really liked Toney but damn i respect him.
If he goes against either Klitschko though he is getting flattened regardless of how good his chin is.
If i was Toney i would call it a day.
TONEY is shot! Goosen can obviously give a **** about James....Hes in shape? Toney was almost never in shape, his punch resistance is out the window and his skills are tarnished....Skills was what he relied on, he almost was never in shape.....and now he's in shape....Goosen please...make your money elsewhere. Toney is shot and will lose to anyone.
I thought Oquendo was flat out robbed. Danny Batchelder was someone who Toney didn't beat decisively. This fight wouldn't make boxing look very good.
Yeah, I just didn't want to use such a strong term but I had Oquendo winning the fight clearly.
All my points if the fight happens says that Wlad beats JT. Toney was great in his day but has looked like total shit the last few years. And "The Nipple" just missed out on the biggest payday of his life because he cant stay in shape in between fights. Maybe all of his defenders always saying "What does it matter that he isnt in shape...he wins!" will understand it now.

Arreola is never shape and neither is James Toney.
