Southpaws are extremely vulnerable to the left hook to the body, which ends up in the kidney area. I think Williams would outwork Cotto most of the fight, as long as it lasts, and if it goes past about 8 or 9, he has a chance to stop Miguel on an accumulation of punches, or outwork him to a decision. But Cotto has one seriously good left hook to the body. Paul's chin has shown itself to be pretty solid so far. But what about his body? And there's no way to build up muscle over the kidney area.
margo is as good a body puncher as cotto.
margo couldn't get started early because pwill outworked him, just like pwill will outwork cotto and stop him late. it's elementary.
Meh, Margs handspeed is much slower than Cotto's and his left hook to the body not as hard. Margs has always been a slow starter, he just didn't move enough to present Williams with angles, something else Cotto will do. Like I said, I favor Williams to win, I just don't think it's cut and dry, and I'm liking Cotto's chances the more I think about it.
Margarito was asleep for the first half of the fight, did very well the second half and almost stopped Williams in the 11th. But he is not on Cotto's level when it comes to left hooks to the body.

On no planet am I a Cotto stan. I favor Williams to win the fight, if he can still make 147, which I believe he can, since he only weighed one more pound fight night against Wright than he did against Quintana in their first. I was pointing out something that no one seems to have addressed about a southpaws natural vulnerability to left hooks to the body.
Who has Williams faced that was a great body puncher?
body puncher or not....williams went 12 strong w/ margarito, and looked just as good in the 12th as he did in the 1st. bottom line is, cotto wasn't able to attack margarito's body, so what will he do against a fighter who throws more than margito, hits harder, and is much faster?
i see a thread posted about pacman having a chance to beat cotto.....i don't think he can, but if there is even a discussion of cotto being able to be beaten by pacman, then cotto has no business in the ring with p dub.
it'd be an action packed fight, i'd love to see it, but it'll never happen....cotto will be methodically broken down.
marg is a good body puncher, but he failed, just like cotto will fail.
just stick to the arum line that haymon is the reason why cotto will never fight pwill and you guys don't need to worry about pwill.

c'mon mang...
are you cotto stans really gonna try and say cotto can win this fight???
you guys needs to be quiet, just like cotto, and let arum do the talking for you when it comes to pwill.
you guys shouldn't let your hero ever be mentioned next to pwill.
if they fight pwill will stop cotto late, it don't matter if cotto goes to pwill's body, pwill never been taken down by a bodyshot.

Great Fukking refute. jajajaja
I ll say it again Outside fight, Williams Ud or late TKO, inside fight Cotto SD or mid rounds TKO!!!!!!
The thing is. What great body puncher has Williams fought? Am I missing something?
Ca you guys, uderstand, that Williams reach is a 1 foot and a half longer than Cotto. If Cotto gets to the inside how the fukk Williams will punch?
If Williams fights for the outside, that foot and half will win him the fight, if he lets Cotto gets to the inside Williams will be in trouble!!!!
Big Dawg, the punisher punches around his himself!!!!!!!!!!
If you are gonna say the first fight was a fluke then everyone else can just as easily say the second fight was a fluke
read my WHOLE post....i said "fluke" at first....then i said it was more of a case of williams not taking that fight seriously....which quintana knew.
i don't use that quintana fight, because more than anything, it was a fluke....
not really a fluke, but it was a case of one guy preparing, and one guy not. in the post fight interview, quintana even stated, "I told Paul Williams not to overlook me."
williams didn't take quintana seriously the first fight anybody can beat anybody when someone's not prepared.....they can fight 5 more times, and williams stops quintana five more times.
If you are gonna say the first fight was a fluke then everyone else can just as easily say the second fight was a fluke
Williams was a virtual nobody when he fought Margarito. Tony could've made much more fighting Cotto for another title. Those two facts are undeniable.
you're right, williams was a "virtual" nobody when he fought margarito.....i'm not disputing that......
what i'm saying is that, THAT FIGHT was still his biggest payday to date.....
williams was his MANDATORY. margarito wanted to fight cotto, and he figured he would be able to get more money if he had HIS belt also. so he decided to fight PW, so he wouldn't get stripped, and go into the cotto fight as a beltholder also, making it a bigger fight. it just didn't go down that way. margarito figured he would have more negotiating power, if he fought cotto WITH his belt, so he fought williams to avoid getting stripped (1) and (2) they had bad blood from a sparring episode.
Whats up with Cotto's footwork and angles, compaired to Winky,Cotto's better at this,Cotto is better at that,Winky is/was a defensive genius!!Cotto has taken more punishment in 30+ fights than Winky has in 50+!!All I'm saying is do not try to downgrade Winky's skill to make Cotto look better!!Winky's top 10 defense of this generation, could not brunt the Punishers onslaught, there is nothing defensively, that Cotto can do better than Winky!!!The only way to beat the Punisher,is probably to match his offense!!Quintana did win the 1st fight, but the Punisher has improved in every fight since and believe it or not,all 3 fighters he fought are bigger and stronger than Cotto!!!
Firts watch the fight again, and youll see margo was open to body shits, Cotto just fell in love with teh head shits, end off.
Scond if Cotto gets close enough to hit Williams to the body, Williams size and reach will play against him because he wont the space to punch Cotto!!!!!!
come on man, cotto would've just admitted, "i didn't go to the body, and it was my mistake...." why would he lie and say he COULDN'T?
one major criticism of williams, is that he likes to fight "on the inside" when he should use his size, and not.
cotto gets inside, he won't be the only one punching......williams likes to mix it up.
i haven't checked how much he made fighting mosley, but that williams' fight was margarito's BIGGEST payday to date.....don't get caught up in all the "williams brings nothing to the table" nonsense.
williams was margarito's mandatory, and the plan was for margarito to beat him, and fight cotto AS A BELTHOLDER ALSO, so he would be able to get a better deal than he would've gotten w/o a belt.

I used to use the Quintana fight, but the more I watch Williams the more I think it doesn't apply. I used to argue that Cotto would beat Williams at Welter, I don't think so any more though. Williams is just too big for him i think.

Exactly, Shane had a hell of a time trying to hit Cotto late in their fight, when Miguel got on his bicycle.
The point is, Margarito could've made much more money fighting Cotto, rather than Williams, and who cares about getting stripped when you can fight an easier fight for another title? (If according to you, he was getting OWNED in sparring with Wiliams.)
