He's a poor man's Gatti
This is exactly what I was gonna say! With the right match making HBO or SHO could have a huge star just like Gatti was. Opponents like David Diaz, Julio Diaz, the guy who just beat Julio Diaz come to mind. He doesn't need to be at the top or win a belt just be put into back and forth brawls where he can come out on top and you have your modern day Gatti. We just need to find his Mickey ward now!
I didn't watch the whole fight, but was Katsidis losing to chavez before he stopped Chavez? And doesn't chavez have so many injuries its not even funny. I think I heard has leg problems and hand problems all the time. I watched the first, two rounds and decided to fast forward to the end to spoil the fight but it seemed to me that chavez won the first two rounds. Did he win most of the rounds before getting stopped? Not a good sign from someone who supposenly always has injuries to be out-pointing Katsidis.
Chavez lost nearly every round on the scorecards from all the judges. I think he basically won the first two, then just got overtaken.
Anyway, he is certainly not a stepping stone. He's a young fighter that will be around the top of the division for years. If he would only get a new trainer then I believe he could become a good champion as well. I truly believe that he has the worst professional trainer in boxing right now and that both of his losses could have been prevented. His loss to Casa was tragic and 90% of that was his trainers fault. Diaz would probably have beaten him still but he had a chance with a good trainer.
If anyone from Katsidis' team reads these boards, get him a new trainer! That guy is an utter disgrace to pro trainers everywhere and is ruining the career of a fighter that could become a good champion as well as a Gattiesque superstar. He needs to go badly. I've never seen so much bad advice given to one fighter in one fight, or just doing moronic things like blocking the cutman and basically stopping him from being able to work on a hideous cut that nearly had the fight stopped against him. Was he trying to lose Katsidis the fight? :nonono:
Katsidis is one of my fav active fighters, he is not the most skilled guy in the world but he is very exiciting, i would say he is a top 10 contender though. A Khan fight would be well good i think Khan would outbox him but if just one of Katsidis punches lands flush on Khan's chin he will be out of it imo.
Its also flat out wrong. An Arturo Gatti? Maybe but deffo not a poor man's Gatti.
If every fighter faught like Gatti and Katsidis I have no doubt that Boxing would be one of the most popular sports worldwide.
Maybe it was just my Green and Gold coloured glasses but I only scored 2 rounds for Chavez. I spat out my OJ when I heard the commentators say Chavez was putting on a clinic.

he is definitely an above average fighter, and he has some skills (you dont get to that kind of level without skill) and i think he may win a belt in the near future....but he wont be a p4p rated fighter
Oi Kostya, is it just me or does that bum Mundine get about 5x the exposure of the clearly more accomplished Katsidis on TV and in the papers?....Terrible.
Cmon guys, You guys are underating him by alot. Are you guys forgetting that he very nearly knocked out (Out of the ring) an elite lightweight in Joel Casmayor before turning it up and getting caught?
Micheal is exactly what Boxing needs right now I cant beleive you guys arent itching to see more of him. He is an agressive power puncher with a decent chin and he has a great personality.
Sure he may not be Pernell Whitaker but thats not his style, I thought it was disgusting how he got booed by the croud after the Diaz loss in Texas, even the HBO commentators were saying that he is not a man that should be booed.
While he is unlikely to be at the top of the division unless his style meshes extremley well with the current beltholder, he is certain to create very exciting fights that are what is needed to help bring boxing back from the brink.
Dont embarrass yourself by calling him a stepping stone, put him up against the Khan that beat a shot Barerra and you have a repeat of the Prescott fight.
He's not an elite fighter, but he can still win a belt. He may not beat the fighters at the top, but he is likable and is exciting to watch so he'll keep getting shots at the top.
After watching a couple of his fights, it looks like the only way he can win against top competition is if he gets in slugfests. He just doesn't have the skills to out box anyone. He's already taken way too much punishment in his young career.
His trainer was absolute crap in that Diaz fight. You cannot turn a brawler into a boxer and hope to outbox natural boxers. Best you can do is tighten the defense and let him brawl on the inside vs. more talented boxers. He may have actually have had a chance to win against Diaz if he just stood toe to toe since he has more power than Diaz. I hate it when trainers try and turn brawlers into boxers it's never going to work. It was like Gatti trying to
outbox Mayweather Jr. Total suicide. Should have just crowded him and swung for the fences.
You're a sucker for a weak chinned - power puncher too? Welcome to the club.
There is no better combination.
If Wlad wasn't on such a winning streak I'd be a fan.
I'm pretty excited about David Price too, that guy is going to go down in flames at any moment.
I've always been pretty sure Khan is too good for Katsidis.
Well interesting fight though. You know what? I really like Amir Khan. He's my new favourite fighter, he's a top man.

LOL, that's a good way of putting it.
Earl was taking some vicious shots to the boat, i had to look away from the TV at times. Great fight.
Khan's hand speed would give Katsidis fits.

I know.
Micky Vann should have called the fight when Katsidis touched down.
'You've had enough son.'.....lol
I thought that fight was basically Earl getting his teeth smashed in from pillar to post but in a really entertaining fashion. Then he knocked him down, it was like Rocky.
Khan would blow him out with three punches, and Katsidis loaded up with every single shot he threw; every single one landed flush and finally he went away. Katsidis put a bit of a dangerous beating on Earl, before the Khan fight he sounded awful. Never really noticed that before.

He knocked Katsidis down not long after Vann threw the towel out of the ring.
That was one of the best fights i've ever seen. Classic.
