Ortiz to headline June 27 B.A.D. Junior welterweight standout Victor Ortiz, who smashed Mike Arnaoutis in two rounds underneath Kirkland-Julio, might go for a world title in his very next bout, which will be the main event of an HBO 'Boxing After Dark' broadcast on June 27, according to Gomez.
Ortiz (24-1-1, 19 KOs) was thought to be headed for the May 2 undercard and rumor had it that he would have faced fringe contender Steve Forbes, but the young fighter and his management would rather go for a world title immediately and the license fee the June 27 HBO date would bring is the best way to make that happen.
Golden Boy Promotions, which promotes Ortiz and has the HBO date, is trying to entice Germany-based WBA 140-pound beltholder Andreas Kotelnik to the U.S. to defend his title vs. Ortiz.
Kotelnik (31-2-1, 13 KOs), a native of Ukraine who is coming off an impressive title defense of undefeated power-puncher Marcos Maidana, would be the toughest test to date for Ortiz, who is only 22 and currently unrated by THE RING. Kotelnik, 31, is THE RING's No. 3-rated junior welterweight.
Kirkland will co-headline the June 27 card if he comes out of his May 2 outing unscathed. Gomez says the B.A.D co-feature could be a title fight with undefeated WBO 154-pound beltholder Sergei Dzindziruk, who like Kotelnik is a Germany-based Ukrainian.
Dunkin confirmed that Dzindziruk would be Kirkland's likely June 27 opponent.
Dzindziruk (36-0, 22 KOs), THE RING's NO. 7-rated contender, won his title from current beltholder Daniel Santos and recently out-pointed Julio in a title defense.
If the fights can be made, Kotelnik-Ortiz and Dzindziruk-Kirkland will make for an excellent 'Boxing After Dark' event that will have heavy fan interest in the States, Germany and Ukraine.
What a ****ing fantastic card. That would make:
June 13th: Cotto vs Clottey
June 20th: Wlad vs TBA (hopefully Haye)
June 27th: Ortiz/Kirkland title shots BAD double header
God I love boxing.
Wow.
That would be some big steps up in competition. I didnt expect either of those guys to go for established belt holders yet. Not that I am complaining, I think both have come far enough to find out whether they sink or swim at that level. Huge risk by each fighters management, but the reward could be tremendous.
I have to give props to Kirkland for putting himself ahead of the pack of up an comers at 154, he is actually trying to make it happen.
Let's hope it all comes off without a hitch...Kirkland is strong and brings alot of pressure, sure Sergei can box but how will he deal with pressure he's never seen before. Also Kirkland is EXTREMELY HUNGRY 4 THIS! Ortiz should win. Eithier way if these fight come off we'll find out alot about Ortiz and Kirkland!
That fight doesn't need to happen yet. They're too early in their careers for it. Kirkland's said pretty much the same thing.
Let the hype and anticipation build on this one. It's gonna be an absolute classic.
im not against hype building up. sometimes the more dryage the steak is, the juicier and better taste it's going to have.
but back in the old days of the 50s and 60s the fight would have been made a year ago lol. i have low patience i know
I would love to see a unification fight between Kirkland and Angulo, rather than them fight right here and now.
Assuming they can win against the titleholders(definately not a guarentee)...That could happen in the fairly near future. Angulo is rated in the top 3 by 3 of the belts.
Problem? the Light Middleweight division is kind of a mess right now. I have no idea whats the problem there. two interim champs and real champs at the same time, Forrest-Martinez and Williams-Dzinziruk. what the heck.
Id go for Daniel Santos vs Angulo though. even have a Puerto Rico vs. Mexico angle going there.
Shit on me, Ortiz getting a shot at a beltholder already! Is Kotelnik the lesser of the 5 champs at 140, though? Urango can bang, but he's one-dimensional... dangerous Bradley will unify once he trounces Holt... Hatton will keep selling out after Pac and look for the money fights...
So I guess this is a great chance for Ortiz. If he can get a good showing against Kotelnik, win or lose, he'll at least have made his mark on 140 early on. I think this is the best thing I've heard since Cotto-Clottey. :smile1:
Kirkland-Angulo would be great is they take Dzinziruk/Santos' belts and want to unify. Smart move for Ortiz going after Kotelnik rather than Urango a big hitter.
Kotelnik is arguably a better fighter than Urango.
Urango would be a risk due to his punching power and strength, but the guy is also wide open and somewhat easy to predict at times. Unless Ortiz doesnt have the firepower to hurt him, Urango might not be that big of a threat.
James doesnt bring it up, he gets asked about it. Same with Angulo. Angulo has stated he would like to fight Kirkland.

the card is dynamite, but i really want Kirkland to fight angulo, james is the one that's hinting about it, but angulo never brings it up which makes me think he doesnt deserve to wear that dog collar around his neck, because unlike pitbulls he's got no balls.

Interesting, I would like to see how Kirkland would deal with Dzinziruk. Ortiz-Kotelnik would be interesting also, a big step up in class but Ortiz might be ready for it.
Would be a good card if they can make it come off, interesting fights.
