Looking beyond the fact that Margarito was found to be a dirty cheater, and the fact that Shane Mosley at the age of 37, still had enough left to treat Margarito like his bitch.
The Staples Center was packed, an all time high record of attendance. The crowd was electric, most of them were on their feet the entire night. The Governor of California was there, and seemed to be loving the show.
Bernard Hopkins was on his feet for most of the fight, applauding Shane's actions in the ring.
And this is only our 2nd fight card of the year.
Anybody wanna tell me about how boxing is "dead" again?
That shit was great! The old man beat the most feared man in boxing! We all know that boxing isnt dead and i just cant wait to see what else this year has to offer!
Thanks i was hoping we still had some true boxing fans who brought up the fact this was indeed a great fight.
Yeah, the controversy about the handwraps and Shane's past steroid use is overshadowing the fact that it was an epic fight and atmosphere, regardless.
So Mosley packed the arena? because that was his hometown not Margaritos... lol
Everybody knows LA's Mexican population live and die for boxing. It's no surprise that the crowd was 90% pro-Margarito.
But your statment about Mexicans keeping boxing alive is ridiculous. They help out a lot, just like the Brits do with Hatton and Calzaghe, just like the people from the East Coast do with Hopkins and Pavlik, just like the Puerto Ricans do with Cotto and Lopez.
Boxing is alive because of all of us, not just one particular group.
I didn't realize I made a racial thread........
What does it matter who made up the majority of the crowd? I'm just glad that the seats are filled.
And your last statement is pretty bold.
Everybody packs the house when they fight in their hometown, or close to it.

There was an entire bag full of "illegal substance" confiscated from his locker room, accoring to Larry Merchant and Kevin Iole.
Whoa. I did not know it was that bad. I'll read up on it now.
you guys are clearly ignoring the facts, and that is the 90% of the crowd were Mexican-American's supporting Margarito... prove me the fuk wrong, would Mosley vs Berto, Williams, etc have the same record breaking arena? fuk no.

**** the 'boxing is dead' bullshit. And **** DLH for goin to do the stupidass MMA show and missin his homey's victory. This was a good nite for boxing, despite the dirty shadow that falls on Marg's camp. SSM just jumped to legendary status if he didn't have it already imo.
I have to say I would hate to sit next to Hopkins at a fight, much less behind him. He's always on his feet barking orders to the Golden Boy fighters.

oh damn, I hadnt heard that. I had only heard that his wrappings were wet.
busted.

Agree on all points, except needing "more proof" on Margarito. The man got caught with an entire ziplock bag full of plaster of paris, I don't think you need to be a rocket scientist to see what was going on there.

When the schedule was coming together, I sorta had this feeling. Then last week's fight delivered, and tonight was epic. To go on ESPN.com and see Shane Mosely on the cover was satisfying too. The bad economy might have been the best thing for boxing. It's like it lit a fire under the promoters.
Yeah, Brto/Collazo was a hell of a start to this year. And we've got Darchinyan/Arce and Pavlik/Rubio, Cotto/Jennings next month. It's only getting better. :boxing:
Yep it was good night for Boxing. Especially since they were saying that was the biggest crowd in Staples center history. Not just for boxing, but for everthing held there. Then the fight was awesome. I mean it was pretty one sided, but in an unbelievable type of way because who knew Shane was going to KO Marg. Then there was all sorts of celebrities there. To top that off it wasn't an Oscar fight that produced this.
Tonights fight was awesome. I know everyones is anti Margarito at the moment, but there is no quit in the guy. he took monsterous shots. really sickening ones, they would have demolished anyone else had they took them as flush as Marg did. but it was that early body work that I think did him in. that first right hand to the body that hurt him was the beginning of the end.
I liked the HBO format change a lot. looked good. AND...no national anthems!!! straight to the fight, (well after some prefight buildup) I love it.
and yall should stop accusing Margarito of being a cheater until we have some real proof that his hand wraps were cheaterfied. never know, could be just a misunderstanding
and whats more, Fedruary is going to be full of outstanding fights and cards. I really cant wait. whats icing on the cake is that I get to go to the HBO Triple header on the 14th :smashfrea
I really love boxing. so unpredictable, and so much fun to watch.

And that's really saying something, considering how 2007 really started things moving, and 2008 stepped it up tenfold.

Absolutely. I also think it's very obvious that HBO is working overtime in order to help the sport. They've made a long list of changes on how they run things. The schedule is different, the format is different, the mismatches are gone. 2009 is going to be a banner year.
