hello people..
the goal of this thread is to start a discussion on miguel cotto and to see whether he is a great fighter or not.. when i mean great, i mean elite, hof status.. we can discuss his accomplishments and if he has done enough to be considered a great fighter, or if he has the potential to become one if he isn't one in your eyes already..
i understand there are many cotto nuthuggers and many cotto bashers but lets please keep the discussion civil.. please don't hate on someone if they make a strong argument and make valid points..
i'll start off.. No i do not think miguel cotto is a great fighter.. I do think he is a very good fighter and has potential to be a great fighter but as of right now he is not a great fighter in my opinion.. I actually think he is overrated.. He has good qualities and has made strides of improvement over the years as a boxer, but he still has a ways to go.. He has won a vacant belt at 140, and a vacant belt at 147, and actually has another chance to win a vacant belt at 147, which is impressive.. I would be more impressed if he beat someone for their belt.. that's my input, i could much further more into detail but i don't want to go on forever.. ok people what do you think?
I think Miguel Cotto is great because... he has a great-looking, hot wife! Does anybody have a picture of her? I saw her on TV and I think she looks hot. What is her name?
He has the potential to be. If he retires tomorrow? No. If he smokes Jennings, losses the rematch to Margarito and is never elite again? No. If he beats Jennings and wins the rematch with Margarito? He will be well on his way.
Cotto has been fighting top notch competition for years now, and his only loss has been to Tony. If he can come through with some more amazing moments in the years ahead, he will be remembered as a Great.
At this point, it is far from decided.
Cotto is overrated in my opinion. His popularity and fighting style has created a lot of bias opinion about him. People had him ranked number one welterweight before fighting any one relevant in that division like Marg, Paul, Joshua, and Cintron further more to suggest he would have a good chance against Floyd was/is at the moment ridicules. As soon as he stepped up to proclaim as the number one welterweight he was beaten to say the least. Now people are talking about a trilogy with Marg before we have seen Cotto back in the ring since his defeat. People are setting themselves up again for disappointment and increase of sour grape posters like the after math of July 26. That should have been wake up call to all Cotto delusional fans(no disrespecting his real fans) that Cotto is still only a contender at the moment. Please note that this does not reflect my opinion on Cotto as a person or to the Puerto Rican people for which I have a lot of admiration and respect for.
Great fighters, in their prime, do not lose to Antonio Margarito. Sorry
Would you say great fighters lose to Buster Douglas or Oliver McCall in their primes?
The potential is there to be great,he improves in every fight! If he beats Margarito in the rematch,he will be in my eyes,"on the doorstep!!"of becoming an ATG,because how many fighters have avenged such a devastating defeat, only time will tell,Im a fan and Im glad a fighter like that and many others are fighting in my lifetime!!
The potential is there for him to be remembered as a great fighter but that's what it is right now, potential, these things are best discussed when a fighter is retired, Cotto seems like he still has quite a bit of time in the sport although we'll see if the Margarito fight has permanently affected him in about a month.
I agree with that, except that if Jennings proves to be a soft touch it may not answer the question of whether he is damaged goods or not.
i think he's a very, very good fighter (although anyone who considers him a great already is getting waaay ahead of themselves)
i think his eventual trilogy with Margarito (hopefully) plus beating a few more good fighters/names would possibly make him a great, depending on the style in which he wins... i think he has the skills to stay between the #1 and #5 ranking in the pound for pound list for quite a while too
I don't know if he's "great" but Mosley's "great" and Miguel beat him, I leave to others excuses on why Miguel beat him. Lets see him come back.
Beating another great fighter doesn't instantly make you great
Miguel has the potential to be a long reigning world champion over the next 5 years

he has the potential to be an ATG, but fights like jennings arent going to get him there, a rematch with margarito would help. Cotto's been a good solid fighter and has fought a better class of opponent on the way up than most of the prospects we have over here in the UK, Hattons resume until tszyu leaves something to be desired. I hope Cotto does come back strongly and has a great career, boxing needs fighters like him
He ain't been around long enuf to be great yet. I think he'll lose again to Marg, but he's young enuf and talented enuf to win a lotta big fights and belts in the future.
