I'm no Oscar fan but what other choice did he have in the Pacman fight when his trainers, HBO announcers, and Boxing officials were all telling him to Pac(No pun intended) it in? He wasn't in the fight for one second he was taking shot after shot so my question is why does this effect his career in any way? How does this take away from his past accomplishments?
Is it really worth it to see a fighter get killed all in the name of having ammunition to discredit his accomplishments on a messsage board? I have seen mindless idiots on this board try to discredit fighters like Chavez Sr and Duran because they quit in match's but my question is why should they have to take needless damage when it's obvious to the whole world that they are gonna lose no matter what and they are simply risking their health by delaying the inevitable.
And you people wonder why UFC is fist fuking boxing into the ground.
Boxers are allowed to quit on their stool, mma fighters are allowed to tap. These are sporting events, not the Coliseum in Rome. If a guy is taking a dive, that's a whole different story. Why live the rest of you impaired because you are too stubborn to admit the other guy is the better man that night.
________
AROMA CLASSIC VAPORIZER
Oscar was done. He couldnt see the punches coming. In the end what does he gain? David Diaz may have gone out like a true warrior, but he was beaten to a pulp.
Hence the term, a fighter is supposed to fight to the final bell. It looks bad when they quit cuz it shows a lack of heart. But there was nothin wrong wit DLH quittin cuz he had no chance of winnin. His submission just looked 10 times worse than anybody else's since it was against a smaller guy he was supposed to KTFO.
The way somthing looks on paper in the end has almost nothing to with the actual result of the fight. So why should it effect his legacy in anyway??
I'm not a message board tough guy like most people here. I've never boxed in a ring before so I will not be a douche by saying I would never quit and stuff like that. I'm all for it. If someone absolutely has no chance of winning why take extra punishment? Its like when Cotto took a knee there were multitudes of peabrains here calling him a quitter. How many people on this message board have had their nose broken to pieces and can only breath through their mouth while taking punches from Margarito? ZERO!!! In a sport where one round can mean the difference between you fighting another day or being a vegitable sitting in your parents house helpless then I say leave it up to the professionals as to when to stop it. Dont listen to armchair pros that think every boxing match should be to the death and do not realize that boxers have families and other concerns other than staying on their feet until they are punched into oblivion.
Bravo!!! I couldn't of said it better myself!!!

it's better to die on your feet than live life on your knees
oscar better get some knee pads
he's chosen his lifestyle
It's also rather funny that you say this about a guy who has probably taken more chances than any other fighter of the contemporary era and fought more fights he had a big chance of losing than anyone else.

Nice Emiliano Zapata quote. You do realize he said that during a time of war...not in the middle of a ****ing boxing match!
I never fought pro, only amateur. There was a couple of times when I was completely outclassed and took a huge number of big shots. Had I stopped throwing back, I knew the ref would've come to my aid, but I never did 'cause it was amateur and knew I only had another round or two to go. Fighting pro though for that many rounds would've probably been a different story.
Boxing is a sport, and a fighter makes his living by fighting multiple times throughout his career. Should a fighter make it a habit of quitting? No. If he can't cut it in the sport, it's time for him to find another way to make a living. But calling it a day if you're taking a tremendous beating, knowing there's nothing you can do to stop it...no shame in that all. You live to fight another day.
I never question why a fighter quits, but I lose a great amount of respect for the fighter when they do... and that's my right. Call it life or death, a sport whatever, there is no quit in a true warrior. Any pugilist knows what he signed up for long before they enter the ring. Quitters can still be Hall of Famers obviously, but in my opinion any greatest of all time talk has to cease immediately.
You don't have Ray Robinson as the GOAT then?

I know exactly what you would do in a boxing fight where you have been hit in the head, can't hit the guy back and starting to get dizzy, exhausted and frustrated. It's always the ones who bray the loudest about quitting that have never even been in the situation that would call for it. Stop being so pathetically immature.
The only people who moan about this are generally people who have never stepped into a ring themselves. It's not a good feeling having your brain knocked around and knowing in the back on your mind that people have suffered permanent damage or even died from taking a beating, there's no shame in calling it a day when this happens.
it's better to die on your feet than live life on your knees
But this isn't life stupid it's a sporting event!!!! Are you that fuking dense that you can't seperate the two?
It means Oscar lost all his biggest fights, even the ones he was SUPPOSED to win easily like this one.
There is a diffrence between supposed to and being favored. He was supposed to win his pro debut but he was just favored against Manny big diffrence.
Also in almost all of his biggest fights he was the underdog so according to your logic he was SUPPOSED to lose those fights anyways so if anything its a testement to the man taking on the best his entire career no matter if he won or lost.
There is a difference between "quitting" and calling a halt to a beating. Duran quit against Leonard, Oscar got beat up. There is a big difference.
I was going to say something, but I couldn't have said it better than that. We are blessed here with some courageous posters who would never quit though.
Kostya Tszyu quit against Ricky Hatton. Did it take away from his accomplishments?
No it didn't but what i'm saying it shouldn't take away from any fighter. Even in say Duran's case where he had no answer for Sugar Ray. He was losing by a mile he wasn't gonna touch the guy so why go on?
Are you gonna call a construction worker who is tired of risking his life on top of skyscrapers a bitch because he quit his job???
i would never quit
it's a bitch move
Don't be a goon. If you've ever been a long time champion that rarely, if ever lost a pro fight but suddenly got old and couldn't do what you used to, then you may know that it is suddenly a very different thing.
Have you ever actually been badly hurt? Not just once in one fight but over and over in the same fight and there was nothing you could do?
I'll never understand the idiocy related with 'Never quit!', 'Die in the ring before you quit!' It's all by guys that are desperate to pretend that's what they would do, but have never actually been severely hurt in the ring and not been able to do a damn thing about it or stop the pain/beating or, even worse, getting beaten up by a young kid who you probably would have knocked the shite out of ten years previous.
A young guy quitting is also different to an older long time champion that is done or tired, or just doesn't care anymore. Everyone does it, and there is no difference to someone quitting on the stool, or lying on their back knowing they could get up but don't. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, because if you're just going to needlessly get hit, there is no point. This is sport and it's their livelihood.
Certain people always seem to be brought up, but you'll probably find that one of that same persons favourite fighters has quit before. Liston, Ali, Pryor, Duran, Chavez, Oscar, Kostya Tszyu, Judah, Cotto, Buster Douglas, Bruce Seldon.........
Hey, even Gerald McClellan quit. He quit in his fight against Benn, what a pussy bitch!:nonono:
Ahhh, yes, Manchine, don't forget Whitaker. The dirty quitting little bitch.
I have seen the all time greats in this sport retire on their stool, Ray Robinson, Julio Cesar Chavez, Willie Pep, Pernell Whitaker, Roberto Duran, Kostya Tszyu, even the old timers such as Joe Gans and Sam Langford.
There's no shame in it when you've given it your best and there's just nothing left.
You don't quit, period.
This is not UFC, where you tap out like a little bitch.
In boxing, you fight to the death.
Wrong!!! You are so fuking wrong that you should be shot for being so fuking stupid!! God forbid you have any kids.
A boxing match is not a matter of life and death!! It's a fuking sport!!!
There is not one reason in the world for any person to leave his kids fatherless, their wifes widows, or their parent childless all in the name of a sport.
Give me one reason why a sport is more important than life you souless fuk!!!!
Its this type of thinking that robbed the boxing world of fighters like Ali and Joe Frasier growing old gracefully and still talking shit about each other.
