MOREBASS used this analogy today to compare boxing and MMA.
MOREBASS: "Like I said before:
Boxing is the slam dunk contest
MMA is the actual game"
I've been disagreeing with him this morning and he's sticking by this analogy. So let me know, is this a valid analogy of the two sports?
here's a better analogy:
MMA is like taking physics 101, while Boxing is like having a PHD in physics.
That's a fair analogy, but grossly incomplete.
MMA is physics 101. It's also Chemistry 101, Biology 101, Psychology 101 and a shitty mandatory called 4oz gloves. Now work toward your doctorate in all of those disciplines simultaneously. That's MMA.
But, are they all great at the sport of MMA, in every facet. No.
That's the point. It's a sport that virtually any guy can at the top can win at any time. It's not about dominance, which is what a sport should be about. It's about how bad you do, not how good you do.I believe that's mostly because of the lack of competition in UFC/Pride. When there's more competition, the fighting styles will change, big time.
It seems as if a lot of you guys are trying to make a point that boxing is a more tactical sport than MMA.
Freddie Roach himself has said that MMA is a much more complicated sport, simply because of all of the extra factors that you have to take into account, such as elbows, knees, kicks, takedowns, submissions...etc.
I mean, its pretty obvious.
No doubt, boxing is a tactical and highly strategical battle. But it is one dimensional, in that all you have to worry about essentially is your opponents hands.Boxing is 1 dimensional? Get real man, boxing is a very defensive sport, it's very psychological, you start out in a stalemate and you gotta work yourself out of that and get the upper hand. If you think that it's pretty obvious you know nothing about boxing.

thats like comparing a formula 1 car to a v6 toyota 4runner and comming to a conclusion that the 4runner is a more complicated machine because it can go on a straightway, offroading, in water, in snow.......... and calling f1 car one dimensional. it may have 1 dimension, but that 1 dimension is greated than the others all dimension combined and multiplied by 10.
I believe I said it better...
I said Boxing is an epic drama with plot twists and deep character development. It may seem a bit slow at times.. but its substance cannot be denied.. Something Like Schindler's List..
MMA is Like Die Hard.. Its Fun and Flashy with Lots of explosions.. But See who wins the best Picture at Oscars..
Trying to sound intelligent. Failing.
Ignorance.
So would you say that BJ Penn is not a GREAT BJJ practitioner ?
Would you say that Olympic Golde Medalist Kevin Jackson is not a great wrestler ?
How about Josh Koschek, is he not a great wrestler either ?
Would you say that Jerome LeBanner is not a great kickboxer ?
Like I've stated before, these aren't guys that are just out there and are okay at a bunch of different things.
Most of these guys have extensive training and experience in one field ie. wrestlers, jiu jitsu players, muay thai fighters, boxers etc...and when they crossover into MMA, they start learning other disciplines to make themselves more well rounded.
But by no means does that mean that they are not GREAT at in one facet of MMA.
That is an ignorant statement that you made to make it seem like MMA fighters are not athletically on par with boxers, which is not at all true.

Okay. Point taken.
Some people prefer Schindler's List...
Some people prefer Die Hard...
So what is the basis for the 'best picture award at the Oscars' ?
MMA fighter walks up the the Boxer.
"Can I borrow some Money??"
LOL, now your taking the stance that boxers get paid more in order to make your case that boxing is superior to MMA ?
Wow.
I'm a boxing fan, and I think what's really killing boxing is the greed in the sport. Its the reason why people feel ripped off after paying for the biggest, largest grossing fight in boxing history.
Its the reason why people feel bamboozled when paying for a boxing PPV event, and can't even name any of the fighters on the undercard.
Its the reason why we have to sit through fights like Jones-Trinidad, Winky Wright - Hopkins, and Calzaghe-Jones Jr.
I never said MMA sucks. That was to illustrate who would know who.
I enjoy MMA. Boxing is just better, to me. But I wasn't even stating that. I was stating that it's better to be GREAT with one facet of MMA than it is to be merely good at a bunch of things.

Biggest MMA star walks up to biggest boxing star.

UNIVERSAL HEALTH WAREHOUSE
heres a better analogy: the hulk says "hey superman, I am going to kick yo ass mutha fuka" superman replies "too bad mate, you only have super strength. I have super strength plus I could freeze you, burn you with my lazer, fly you to jupiter, and I could tie you up with my super speed before you could say 'pass me the kryptonite'". :)

Here's a better analogy.
An MMA fighter went up to a boxer, then went down because of the boxer.
MMA Guy = Dead.

heres a better analogy. an MMA fighter went up to a boxer and said "you are such a great puncher. I am so impressed. I would be honored if you could spar with me in a street fight." the boxer not wanting to risk injury replied " no sir, I will have to respectfully decline your offer". :)

Heres the only analogy you need to have.
A duck waddles over to a horse, and says 'You know, it sure is great that I can walk on land. Don't you enjoy it horse?
The horse said, 'Yeah, it sure is.'
Then the duck decided to mock the horse for only being able to do one thing. Saying, 'Sadly, you can't swim like I can. Or, you know, fly like I can.'
He laughed, the the horse did, too. Then said, 'You CAN do all those things. However, you can't swim as gracefully as the dolphin, or fly as beautifully as the eagle. Also, you definitely can't run as powerfully as I can. You can do all those things pretty good. We do them all seperately, but great.'
Boxing > MMA.
