Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer moved a step closer to putting together a fight between lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and former titleholder Juan Diaz on HBO for Feb. 28 or in March. "Marquez has accepted the fight and Diaz has accepted the fight," Schaefer told ESPN.com. "Now, it's a matter of finding the money. Assuming they each get paid X, they have agreed to fight. Now, I need to find X." Schaefer is working with HBO, but they are a bit off on the money. If the fight happens, it won't be in Diaz's hometown of Houston, where he drew a big crowd for his September win against Michael Katsidis. Schaefer said part of his deal with Marquez is that the fight won't be there.
Very interesting fight. I wish they didnt have to fight each other. But that is how it goes. I think Juan Diaz can win a close decision. But by no means easy what so ever. I think his intense activity can give Marquez trouble and draw him into a fight. I also think Diaz has underrated boxing skills. I dont think he can outbox Marquez but he can use that to give a different angle
WOW, very good matchup. Props to Marquez and Diaz for taking this fight as its very dangerous for both of them.
Marquez showed he can pop at 135 by knocking out Casamayor impressively. Diaz has a hell of a workrate and a good jab. But Marquez just counters with such powerful shots and combos man I see Diaz being vulnerable to that. Im going to pick Marquez winning by stoppage. Thats what I see happening.
cant wait for this fight, hope a deal is reached.
good prediction sir.
thanks
:)
and I got hate for saying Marquez could KO him.
I feel the same way. I am fans of both, but I think JMM will pull out a decision.

What!? You serious?
Look, Paq almost dropped Oscar at 147. Oscar. A guy who's only been stopped by a middleweight lol. Doesn't mean Paq can bang on every Welterweight fighter that ever lived.
Now Marquez is my favorite fighter of all time, but be serious. Campbell blatantly his harder then Marquez at 135. No question Marquez is skilled and knows how to put his shots on a guy. But Katsidis also got to Joel's chin, and Katsidis couldn't even **** with Diaz. And the triangle effect works here, cause I'm talkin about strength, not skill.
But Diaz is too fresh, too young, too durable. Marquez will either get walked down late and take a loss, or move his feet enough to get decisioned. Because unlike Joel, Diaz doesn't come forward with his hands down. Diaz throws up the optimus prime defense, and moves his feet. And I don't Marquez can break that shell.
Serious as a heart attack.
How can you judge Marquez power at 135? Especially judge it as bad? When hes only fought there once and won by KO against a guy whos never been stopped thats all im saying.
Diaz doesnt come forward with his hands down, but you make it sound like Casamayor is a walking punching bag. Casamayor fought a very disciplined fight and was keeping good distance and launching counter left hands all night. He wasnt easy to get to, you make it sound like he just walked into Marquez shots. Diaz defense isnt all that great, hes right there to get hit. I think he will throw a lot and it will cause him to eat a lot of shots from Marquez. Diaz has never been in there with someone as seasoned as Marquez, and thats a fact. So to say he will walk Marquez down when hes never been in there with anyone as seasoned as Marquez doesnt make sense to me. Katsidis was considerd a big puncher at 135. He couldnt KO Casamayor. Marquez did. Does the triangle theory work here? I mean we are talking about strength not skill.
As far as the Pacquiao coment you made....he never had Oscar really hurt from one punch. He just took the guys heart. He boxed well. Completely different than the Marquez-Casamayor where Marquez brutally put Casamayor on his back from right hands twice.

Perfectly said, took the words out of my mouth. And the punches he throws usually land. There arent any punches thrown just to be thrown, each one is meant to land. He was the 2nd most accurate puncher in boxing before the campbell fight i believe
Call me crazy, I am going with Diaz. I just have a feeling about this kid, he was a monster before Campbell but I believe he is only going to get better.
I like him and have followed him since his name came up during the Olympics 5 years ago but man, this is a tough one to call especially after the Nate fight and JMM is non-stop and smarter (ringwise).

Man, this is a tough one for me. I did pick Marquez by decision only because I say how much trouble Nate gave Dias. I think Marquez is just a mini version of Nate (style wise anyways). IMO!!
lol Campbell isn't a tactician and he used brute strength to pound Diaz out, not "tactics." Marquez doesn't have that kinda stiff power in his shots at lightweight.
like that right hand that crumpled Casamayor. Marquez has only fought once at 135 and he stopped a guy whos never been stopped. I think he showed good power at 135. As far as brute strength maybe hes not as strong but I think he sure ca punch at 135, and probably betteer than Campbell.
Juarez put up a hell of a fight in the later rounds and i thought he stunned Marquez a few times. And its because Rocky throws shots from the sides and Barerra and Pac throw them stright punchs that they were able to knock Marquez down - besides being more active. I think Rocky punchs just as hard if not harder then any of these guys.
I strongly disagree, I didnt see Marquez stunned and I thought Marquez completely controlled that fight. I know your a big Juarez fan though (I remember betting you in both the Barrera fights lol and you had his highlights in your sig). So whatever, we both have our opinions and thats cool.
and yes Juarez can deffinately punch very hard, the guys just doesnt let his shots off enough and he really hasnt seemed capable of fixing that problem.
by the way, my amateur career has been going great :)

Yeah Marquez "schooled" Juarez after he split his head open with a head butt in the first round.
Marquez schooled Juarez, like I said. Headbutts hapen all the time, its boxing not ballet.
Dont ignore my first post to you. You said Marquez hasnt stopped anyone since featherweight. Marquez knocked out Casamayor in his last fight which was his lightweight debut.
You said hes been in wars with Barrera, Pacquiao, John, etc.
Who are the etc.? What WARS has he been in? And the John fight wasnt a war at all. A fight like that isnt the type of fight you watch and say "man neither fighter will ever bee the same"
Do you guys remember when Juan Diaz and Rocky Juarez were both huge prospects being featured on the same cards early in their careers? Showtime did that program on them like they were comic book heroes. Juarez was considered a better prospect then but Diaz surely pulled ahead lately.
Marquez already schooled Juarez, if he beats Diaz then damn Marquez has f'd texas in the a
I think this fight will end up in El Paso

Im surprised there making this fight but **** it when you fight for GBP you will fight somebody. I think it can go either way. Diaz is going to try and counter whatever Marquez trys to counter. One hell of a fight.

I think age (35) and his wars with Pacquiao, Barrera, John, etc are starting to catch up to Marquez and Diaz will edge out a decision. Lol at Marquez by stoppage, Juan has a serious beard and JMM hasn't stopped anyone since FW.
Ive see Diaz rocked by Francisco Lorenzo.
Marquez knocked out Joel Casamayor in his last fight when he moved to 135 and Casamayor has never been stopped.
Marquez-John was FAR from a war, and who is etc.? Name some more WARS because I cant think of them.
learn your history
Anyway I'm going with Juan Diaz although I'm MORE interested in Nate getting in the mix.
It is like having 3 belts in one division means NOTHING
Why aren't fighters like Marquez, Pacquiao, Barrera on Floyds resume. Probably because he would have lost to one or two of them.
