Let's hear what people have to say about this fight. I've heard a lot of people think the decision went the wrong way, although I've also heard that Espadas's corner said that he needed a KO in the 12th...
What was the reaction that you all gave to this fight after seeing it?
I think you are referring to the Fernando Velardez fight...
He KO'd him in 5 and then stood over him with his glove up to get his picture taken.
I did find out the reason that happened.
He fought Erik's little brother, Diego Morales in Tijuana, and I guess Velardez acted like a **** down there. Then, on top of that, Diego Morales knocked Velardez down 4 times, but lost because he corner entered the ring before the round ended, so he got a DQ on his record.
Whether it was an accident, or a situation like Jones-Barrera I, I don't know.
You know the most shocking thing of the Jones-Barrera fights? The fact that a really strong puncher in Barrera was not able to crack Jones's extremely fragile chin.
I don't belive that shit about Verlardez. Bobby Boy(Verlardez) was a cool person all the times i seen him fight he never acted bad towards his opponet. Now, his dad or his brothers thats a differnet story. But Bobby Boy was a good guy, he is the real Rocky Balboa story. The guy was brought in to lose so many times that he'd shock the annoucers and then starting wining a buch of fight and finally got a title shot unfortunatly he had to fight a truly great fighter in Morales for a title.

I never considered Barrera a huge puncher. He was an accurate puncher who threw very effective shots but he wasn't like Wilfredo Gomez or Sandy Saddler.
I think Jones' poor punch resistance has more to do with his stamina. He was very sloppy and wasted a lot of energy that by the fourth or fifth rounds of most of his fights, he was useless. He'd always start strong and then fall apart, like in the Johnson fight.
Barrera was landing the right hand a lot against Jones but keep in mind, his right hand has never been his money punch. He's a left-handed converted southpaw ala Oscar de la Hoya and Gerry Cooney and wasn't able to get in those cracking hooks upstairs.
Jones came in shape for those fights and won on will.
Elaborate please. I don't know what you are referring to.
My bad D. I was actually talkin about the wrong fight. I was referring to an altercation that took place in the ring after one of Erik's fights that he had instigated, but I don't think it was this one. But keepin on the topic I always thought Guty got slighted by the judges 1st time, but EM put it on him in the rematch.

I'd have to watch the first fight again, it really was nuts the whole situation. Still I thought Barrera was in trouble and it would be better to come back and fight another day. His legs were gone.
We've seen Barrera descend into a four-corners kind of offense that has mixed results. You remember in the second fight with Morales he wasn't doing anything for the first 6 rounds or so and digging himself into a hole on the cards. He was trying to box too much against a long opponent determined to not give up his height.
Similar to Junior Jones' situation. Jones was keeping him at bay with straight punches and working Barrera's body as well. Barrera wasn't able to close the distance and get inside late in the fight and whenever he came in he would get hit with the right (and surprisingly, he was able to nullify Jones' jab for the most part.)
Those lanky guys will always give you trouble, especially at those lighter divisions.

They didn't go in before the bell rang that is why they were complaining why the ref stopped teh fight.
And Barrera got over the right hand from Jones, but Barrera just feel in love with boxing style. Barrera was thought to be done coming into the Morales fight, he was thought of to be done when he went up agianst Hamed. Thought of to be done after Pacquiao. Barrera isn't like many fighter that guy bounces back great, he must live a good rightous life.

I actually liked the way he fought in the second Jones fight, I thought up until the second half of the fight it was all him all the way. Barrera was boxing and brawling equally well until the second half when Jones surprisingly had more stamina than Barrera.
I also think that the memory of that one right hand was embedded in Barrera's mind and he was afraid of walking into it again. Jones won that fight because he wanted it more in crunch time.
In regards to the first fight with Jones, from what I saw Barrera's corner came in before the bell ended and that constitutes a DQ. I felt that cheapened the event itself since it was a clean TKO but the right man won.

seriously i probably love barreras style more than morales' , but ill always hate barrera for being a bitch.....
Truer words have never been spoken. I agree 100%. I love watching Barrera, but goddamn is he a bitch.
I really can't see how you can give Barrera more rounds. He was winning early then went into a defensive shell down the stretch. You can't give away the late rounds and win a decision. Ask Oscar, he knows about that.
Maybe the judges were crooked. Call up the commission and let me know what they say.
Here's the number, leave a message.

barrera won the second fight...i cant see how jones wo more rounds, i reallly cant......youd have to be biased and give him ALL the close rounds...otherwise, i agree with your post.....

Yeah, I do remember the big punch in the 12th... and after that, Morales ran without punching. That did probably stick in people's minds.
I don't think they were coming in for TKO purposes. The first thing they did was throw water at Junior Jones, and I took that as anger because he was still punching after the bell. Not sure if it would have mattered had the next round started, but... I don't think his corner was trying to stop the fight.

If they weren't stepping in to stop the fight, it probably would have been a good idea because Barrera was done. You could have given him 7 minutes to recover, he'd still be f-----.
Still, if you enter the ring before the bell is rung, you lose by disqualification.
There was one moment, and I think it was in the twelfth round that sticks out in my mind. Morales threw a jab and Espadas dropped a right hand over it and it looked like he had lost his footing for a moment after it. Espadas never followed up on it but it was the most eye-catching moment of the fight.
Morales won that fight IMO but I have to say that at that point and the Chi fight that followed, I thought Morales was on his way out. He had just given so much so early in his career.
I will always say though, Barrera was much more the better fighter than Morales was.

Erik just did some shady shit afterwards.

I like to say before there was Erik Morales, before Juan Manuel Marquez, there was "Marco Antonio Barrera." Everybody thought he'd be the next Chavez, people were sure he would never lose anytime soon. I really disliked the fact that Barrera changed his style after the Jones fight. But reality is because of this change he last a long time in boxing.
But when Barrera lost the 2nd time and took 1 year off, that was all the oppertunity Morales needed to capture all of Barreras fans and hearts of all boxing fans. Morales took over where Barrera left off. Thats how it happened. I know people have asked, "how did Morales becomes so popular" a warrior like Barrera was absent many of us weren't sure if he was going to return as he also talked about going back to school and studying to be a lawyer.
The thing that bothers me about the 1st Jones fight is that people act like Barreras corner threw the towel and that wasn't so. The ref that night was an amature, he didn't know what to do in the scuffle. But the bell had rang and Jones was still attacking and the ref was just looking untill Barreras corner came in. Then the ref waved the fight cause he didn't know what to do but he sees Jones celebrating. I thought Barrera won the 2nd time around but it was a stupid fight he fought.

He did get rocked a couple of times by big punches... Well, I'm not sure if rocked is the right word. He was knocked back, but... Morales either never got hurt, or he hid it very well, because he was always punching back and his legs always seemed to be under him.
I think the bigger thing people remember is Morales throwing about 10 punches in the 12th and running like a deer. THAT was really weird to see.

Talking about HBO innacuracies........
reminds me of how they called Jones-Barrera 2....i hate Barrera's guts but damn.....he fought ****ing insane that night...thats the best combination of boxing-brawling by him(along with barrera-morales 3) in a big fight ever...........and tehywere hating on him......and praising Jones more than they shouldve......probably didnt help that they were influenced by Jones Jr's friendship with Junior, as he was calling the fight and the fact that barrera got beat in the first fight, so they kinda overrated juniors effectiveness...need to watch that figt again, but i remmember barrera landing like 150 more punches than jones throwing like 400 less but he ddint get outflashed at all...seriously i probably love barreras style more than morales' , but ill always hate barrera for being a bitch.....

morales won clearly....its just that the HBO crew where hating on him for boxing.....they were used to him beating the crap out of people....nacho berstain and guty sr. tell him he needed a KO after or the 11th...
I mean, even the rounds were guty did more, morales landed better punches or punches that looked much better and aside from the time he was almost dropped, he was never even hurt....
In a way thats what it was. I mean in a few fights after the Zaragoza fight when Morales wasn't Koing fights. Merchant made a comment that Morales isn't a puncher which is further from the truth, of course later on Merchant backtracks years later. So in a way as stated in bold, people were used to seeing Morales.....
I still remember Morales going to the ropes more so then ever before, boxing away more so then ever before. I'll have to see the fight again and score it but i still recall it a close fight.
What people look at in this fight was the one moment where Morales was displaced by an overhand right. I thought Morales won with some room to spare.

Yeah, I was getting really irritated by the HBO crew.
They kept saying shit like, Morales is not doing anything, he refuses to punch, etc. I didn't really see it. The way you described this fight to me was not what I saw. I was expecting to see a super tactical boxing match, but... both guys landed some hard shit on each other, and there were almost no clenches.
I actually enjoyed this bout quite a bit for it being a tactical boxing match that a lot of people were bored by.
