I said this in another thread and I think it warrants a thread of it's own.
So what's up with Chad Dawson? Did I fall asleep for 3 years and miss something with this kid? Why all the hype all of a sudden, I know he's undefeated and black, and that goes a long way around here but this shit is ludacris.
Are we not talking about a guy who just a few months ago looked and acted like a scared little bitch in the ring against Johnson? Narrowly escaping with a shit decision and vowing ot never face Glen again?
The same Glen Johnson that Bernard Hopkins TKO'd 10 fucking years ago?
And he's your go to guy now for Calzaghe? Why? Because he beat Tarver? :lol1:
Dawson is dogshit and he's an accident waiting to happen, Joe Calzaghe would feast on his corpse, as would the 43 year old Hopkins. I'd favor both Joe and Bernard to outclass this kid en route to lopsided UD victories.
Look Joe Calzaghe doesn't have to fight Chad Dawson. I understand and accept that. I wouldn't blame him if he didn't feel like going from his career high payday with that much fanfare to fighting a guy that hardcore boxing fan's want to see him up against. I'm not going to discredit Joe for not wanting to do that. He's been around and done it all pretty much.
But if Joe Calzaghe does fight Chad Dawson, Chad Dawson wins. You have my personal guarantee. And Joe Calzaghe will have my 100% respect and admiration if he even decides to take the fight, win or lose. But HE WILL LOSE.
And p.s., if you don't see how good of a fighter Chad Dawson is then you don't know boxing. He's the real deal and while alot of folks here were all up Kelly Pavlik's ass there was a select few here saying how legit Chad really was. Guess what, there's more than a select few saying it now. He's the truth.
that little word only has 2 letters, but the meaning is huge......if........what if Dawson outworks, out lands and out classes Joe in front of 50,000 Joe maniacs. Then what you think Joe's peeps would say?.........the same shit Roy's peeps is sayin' today!! EXCUSES is something ONLY for losers, so of course the losin' side will find many things to be blame an L on....Dawson is "READY"........the Dean of the division, Glenn Johnson took him to school and you better believe he learned some valuable shit.
Great point... Johnson is a warrior and Dawson came through the test he may not have came through with flying colours but he still passed, and like you said he probably learnt more in that fight than he previously had in his last 5...
In a nutshell Calzaghe doesn't need anyone right now.... Dawson needs Calzaghe. and with Dawson being a threat (which I'm sure no true knowledgeable boxing fan can deny) it makes this fight look like it wont come to fruit.
For me he doesnt bring anything to the table for Joe C to consider fighting him.., He has talent but if joe beat him then it would be the same old "Dawson was too green" excuses.

Because if he loses to someone like Calzaghe or an older guy like Hopkins the world will think that he is made of "overrated".
No because he passed his test and is more proven then Kessler, Lacy so that won't fly
Because if he loses to someone like Calzaghe or an older guy like Hopkins the world will think that he is made of "overrated".
You also have to consider this could be the only time Dawson could fight them, Calzaghe and Hopkins pretty much have 1 foot out the door, there's no time to wait until he's 30 to fight them. And if he goes on to do good things, people will look back at the win for either Calzaghe or Hopkins as a very good one, look at how much more Calzaghe's victory over Hopkins looks now with Hopkins' win over Pavlik.
Dawson has a lot of talent, and he's a better fighter now than he was back against Johnson, I thought he won that fight, he's also the fighter most people recognize as the best light heavyweight outside of Calzaghe and Hopkins so I think he's a pretty good fighter, why not fight the best and see what he's made of?

Wow, I cannot believe the dismissing of Dawson in this thread. The kid is tremendous.
It isn't so much dismissing Dawson, he has potential. It's more the fact that Dawson is now being bandied about as the ONE GUY that if ONLY Joe beats him then he'll get our respect. But he isn't the only ONE GUY that it has been said about. Look up the old Lacy threads, Lacy was the ONE GUY who Calzaghe had to beat, Calzaghe wrecks him and Lacy was suddenly garbage. Then Kessler was the ONE GUY that if only Calz would beat he would have our respect... You see how it works? Now after months of Pavlik being the ONE GUY he loses to Old Man Popkins by an insane margin and suddenly without warning Dawson becomes the ONE GUY...
Dawson is going to be a good light heavy for the next generation but right now he doesn't have the star power for it to be worthwhile for Calzaghe to fight. Calzaghe vs (old shot) Jones was a PPV. Calzaghe vs Dawson might end up on HBO or Showtime as a free airing.
Uhh Reggie Johnson was pretty ****ing good man. He gave Toney a shitload of problems and beat John David Jackson, arguably both Jorge Castro fights, Steve Collins, and then moved up to Light Heavyweight and beat solid comp there too. He was one of Jones' better people.
Robert Allen was the mandatory twice. Simon Brown was a tune up basically.
It isn't about how good a fighter is, it's about what they have DONE to deserve a shot at Hopkins or Jones. The comment I was responding to suggested that Calzaghe didn't deserve a shot at those two. But he held one of the belts, racked up a lot of defenses, made his claim. To suggest that Calzaghe needed to do something more to get a shot at Jones and Hopkins of all people (who both fought their fair share of turds, let's be honest) is ludicrous and is simply arguing, not thinking.
Calzaghe isn't a huge puncher so Dawson has nothing to fear and will most likely block a lot of Calzaghe's shots.
Also he is a "slapper" and he is "sloppy" and has a "weak chin" because he got dropped by "old man Hopkins" right?
Zab Judah has a better chance of winning a title at 140 then Gamboa being up that high on the p4p list. Shit I might even say Linares too. Linares is great and all, but he's way to inactive and he seems to get injury hurt a lot.
Oh and @slicksouthpaw, what do you mean Glen Johnson was a slickster or something? Johnson might have been better, but he was still very good at 32-0. Shit he might have just gone through a rough patch. Johnson has many problems with movers and combonations.
It's just that Dawson lacks the grade a defensive to beat either Hopkins or Calzaghe.
Say what you want about Roy being shot, but that's how Joe always fought pretty much. That more style of control, but flurries. He's a weird ass style, but it works. Not to mention that Joe is the best adapter in the game today to people's gameplan, he could adjust to Dawson's speed.
And Dawson is nowhere near as good defensively as Prime Roy, to whoever compared him to that. Shit they don't even fight the same. Jones had a weird ass style.
Dawson has a better chance of beating Nard, but even then that's unlikely.
Roy was definitely shot, he no longer had the legs to move away from Calzaghe's punches and he doesn't have the workrate anymore to capatilze when Calzaghe is not on the defensive (and there were plenty of opportunities). A prime Roy would of beaten Calzaghe.
As for Dawson's defense, Dawson has improved his D against Tarver. He'll beat Calzaghe or Hopkins. As for Calzahge's adaptability, it wouldn't matter how he adapts because he won't have any answer to Dawson's speed. Dawson can really set a fight to his pace with his jab, than overwhelms his opponents with a string of combination's. Dawson also counters very well. Calzaghe isn't a huge puncher so Dawson has nothing to fear and will most likely block a lot of Calzaghe's shots.
Expect Chad to be number 1 p4p along with gamboa and linares ina few years

Wow, I cannot believe the dismissing of Dawson in this thread. The kid is tremendous. Fast hands, great body puncher, great movement and footwork and a decent pop. I'd absolutely favour him to beat Calzaghe. In fact, most people did on here before last night.
And now suddenty, he can't hold Calzaghe's jock strap because Calzaghe beat the version of RJJ we saw last night?
Jesus, it's amazing what beating a shot legend can do for you.
Excellent post..
I know why, because hes a LEGIT threat!!
Dawson is like the newer Roy.. Not as good as a prime Roy obviously, but has blazing speed, good pop, excellent boxing skills and ring generalship..
I don't see him as chinny either.. Some ppl on this forum are just f uckin buggin.. If you get caught you get caught..
Dawson was down and up.. He was never HURT..
Calzaghe was down and up. He wasnt really hurt either and ppl say hes got a great beard..
I can't understand this..
Expect Chad to be number 1 p4p along with gamboa and linares ina few years
Bigger and stronger, sure. Faster and better defensively? Nah.
Four knockdowns in his entire 46 fight career, all of them but one a flash knockdown and even in the one that wasn't (Mitchell) he was back on his feet and throwing bombs within seconds. Calzaghe has a decent chin.
You're absolutely right. Calzaghe did NOTHING to get a shot at Hopkins, unlike Robert Allen (twice) and Simon Brown obviously. And he did NOTHING to deserve a shot at Jones. Not like the mighty Otis Grant or Reggie Johnson...
Uhh Reggie Johnson was pretty ****ing good man. He gave Toney a shitload of problems and beat John David Jackson, arguably both Jorge Castro fights, Steve Collins, and then moved up to Light Heavyweight and beat solid comp there too. He was one of Jones' better people.

saying Mayweather will beat Cotto/Margarito isn't the same as him actually beating Cotto/Margarito in real life. you do understand that right???
Surely you'll agree.
its still more feasible to assume mayweather could before calzaghe because him being #1 p4p and superior skillset, but your point still stands.
True words right here.

for real for real
If Dawson is so shit hot why didn't anyone even think of his name until Pavlik lost to Hopkins?
Well he never gets any press, because he is a show time fighter and has a cheap promoter ( as Darkstar777 says). Pavlik was with HBO and that's the biggest boxing network, so he had no problem getting all of the attention and he was also a crowd pleasing fighter with great power. Dawson is one of those fighters that is a HUGE risk but little reward, and you can check my posts from over a year ago, i have been talking about this fight for a long time.
myself slick and others called for it long before pavlik lost
Exactly

Dawson is more proven than Pavlik is, and is actually in Calzaghe's weight division and with his style, he is the biggest young threat that Joe would have fought in his entire career. I would pick Dawson and i would bet every single point that i have.
