Now be honest gentlemen. Truely I never heard of him before the Lacy fight. Never heard his name mentioned with the greats. I might have seen him one time before hand but there was no big deal about him at the time. Thinking back to the 05-06 period It was probably the WW and lower weight classes ruling the BOXING world and MW/LHW meant Taylor / Wright / Hopkins / Tarver. We were still trying to comprehend the 3 losses in a row for Roy.
Who was Joe Calzaghe?
I will answer the question for myself He was a Euro fighter who beat a hyped up Jeff Lacy. Well you can say that at that time.
Well who is Joe Calzaghe since?
Let me see he is a damn good Euro fighter who beat Sakio Bika, Peter Manfredo Jr, Mikkel Kessler and Benard Hopkins. People will try to discredit the Hopkins win but this is the same B Hop that destroyed Pavlik a short while ago.Many will agree Kessler is the man now at SMW since joe moved up. Oh wait he is also ranked between 2-4 on the P4P list.
Okay for all you limeys out there that say us yanks don't reconize I posted it. I said it. It is known Joe is a damn good fighter trying to prove his greatness outside of the UK. in my eyes he is almost there a dominating win over Roy put him there? Maybe, maybe he needs one more fight against a threat. Many don't see Jones as a threat. In my eyes if he beats Roy convinceingly he is there. On the flip side if he losses to Roy he is still a damn good fighter. Listen for many out there that know abou the Boston Redsox New York Yankee rivalry then they would understand this. You always clown your rivals it makes you feel better. I would never not admit Boston to be a good team i mean come on they won the World Series two times since 2004. They put a killer team on the field every year. That being said same rules apply here with Joe Calzaghe.
Joe Calslappy The Slapper-
Yes he does often throw slapping punches. You UK memeber stop trying to deny it. I know a slap when I see it. He throws slapping punches. that being said I would never want to get slapped 25-35 times a round for 12 rounds.
Let me here others thoughts on this post......
Max Kellerman thought Joe was good back when Friday fights was in the early stages and that's all I know.
I think The Peterson boys are good, I think that Sam Peter was pretty good, thought Pavlik was damn good. ..Lefty
I remember watching the Mitchell fight on Showtime back when I was just a casual fan. I didnt realize that was Calzaghe until I saw it again years later though.
So basically, no.
no you're not alone..and after the lacy fight i must adnitt i was a joe fan untill the manfredo discrase of a fight..that turn me off to joe(but i did root for him against kessler)
The Manfredo fight was a joke I was looking forward to a match and I got a early stoppage and Manfredo was like huh what? God Damn it throw a punch Peter!! I was screaming at the TV. I was routing for Joe against Kessler I wanted to see him win and come to the US and fight guys like Hopkins and Jones and Dawson etc....Lefty
never heard of the guy pre-lacy...but was like damn he kicked jeffs ass..he cant punch shit..lol
Ok Larry see i am not the only one who didn't know o fth egreatness of Joe lol....Lefty
Seen him fight a few times on Showtime who was big on Calzaghe, Hamed and Hatton before you probably ever heard of them too.
Nah I heard of all three of them sir I can assure you of that. While I can admit I am more of a HBO watcher and back then I didn't pay much attention the fights on SHO I heard of all of them. I know pay more for my cable to get the GOLD package the only package you can get both SHO and HBO togther. I just wasn't very hyped on him like has been stated here in the thread. I too thought Lacy would beat him.....Lefty
Honestly i thought he lost his B-hop fight
Lacey=sux
Bika= hyped contender type of fighter
Manfredo Jr.= see above ^^
Kessler= Who?
Well everyone is entitled to their opinons...Lacy didn't and still does not suck. he was green and foguht a seasoned veteran. Kessler is a very good fighter and the best now at 168 since Joe left.....Lefty
Honestly i thought he lost his B-hop fight
Lacey=sux
Bika= hyped contender type of fighter
Manfredo Jr.= see above ^^
Kessler= Who?
EPIC FAIL.
* Lacy didn't suck before fighting Calzaghe.
* Bika may be a Contender but he's obviously a nightmare to deal with.
* Manfredo Jr. fight was done for MONEY and exposure in the USA because, at the time, Contender's were more well-known than current champions. Joe didn't want to fight Manfredo and has openly stated this.
* Mikkel Kessler kicks ass.
A prospect? Dude, he was calling out Hopkins and Jones on Showtime probably 2 years before the Lacy fight.
No, more like 4 years before the Lacy fight and 6 years before the Hopkins fight. As we all know, Joe was supposed to fight Hopkins in 2002. You know the rest -- Hopkins pulled out.
As for Calzaghe, I've been watching the dude since 1997 (Eubank fight era).

There's a couple different level of boxing fan.
Serious Boxing Fan - aware of most all major champions and long-reigning titlists above featherweight, orders 3 out of every 4 PPVs, and reads at least one or two forums or boxing websites. Has a diplomatic, non-nationalistic view of boxing, and has a deep well of boxing knowledge that comes from actually watching and following the fight game for many years.
Casual Boxing Fan - not sure who is champ and who isn't. Knows the fighters in his own area/country and is pretty well ignorant of all others. Orders fights rarely since Tyson retired. Yet has first-hand knowledge of several big boxing events (Tyson Holy 2, etc).
Newb Boxing Fan - is all over the forums, because the internet and forum posting is a way of their life. Loud and vocal about things he/she has no idea about. All boxing knowledge is from youtube, boxrec and from watching HBO and listening to Kellerman and Lampley for the past couple years.
Serious Boxing Fans knew about Calzaghe, and knew Lacy was in for a serious fight. The other two fan-types thought they were going to watch Lacy's 4th easy knockout in a row.
I have ordered most every fight since I can remember. I can anme every chanmo in retty much every weight class my friend. I heard of Joe Calzaghe before the Lacy fight I just never thought he was that good. Lacy fight and the way he won put him on the map. That was the point of this post. Yes I am pretty new to the forum yes I am vocal about thing but you ask about me and people will tell you I have knowledge. I also admitted in the post that WW and below was where my interest was at the time and if you mentioned MW LHW Taylor / Wright / Hopkins / Tarver came to mind. I didn't place Joe in their class or in the smae sentence. If you knew me or read my other posts you woul dhave never have blurted that post out....Lefty
Yes I know about alot of prospects too sir. The point I was trying to make is how was he regarded was his name put in sentences with the others I mnetioned sir? I know I blow my nose often but I still cant remember the last tiem I did. WEell you get the point right?

I disagree with the third one. he slaps because he doesnt want both his hands broken in the first round.
Okay make a tight fist with your left hand and punch a wall. Ok then slap the same wall as hard as you can with your right hand. Now tell me you can't hurt your hand slapping something too. He throws wide looping punches and he has weak hands keeping a tight grip in boxing gloves is not easy for 10-12 rounds. the fact is I see him slapping later in fights not early on. I just watched the replay of the Hopkins fight with Calzaghe and he started off skapping and never stopped....Lefty
If you haven't heard of a WBO champion; That shows your boxing ignorance, just cause you're ignorant, doesn't mean everybody is.
My man there is a difference between hearing of a Boxer and then knowing the fighter and watching him on a reguliar basis. I heard of Carlos Baldomir before he beat Judah but I never heard of him you understand? he was a no body. Andre Berto is one of the Alphabet Champs at 147 but you ask who is the WW Chamo and you will get 1 of 2 answers Margarito or Paul Williams. Yes i heard of Berto and i am sure many others here and in the UK heard of Berto. But I I told you he was the best things since sliced bread and the only win you can mention on his record is Steve Forbes would you believe me?
he does slap, only a completely biased stan would deny this, but people act as if every punch he throws is a slap, and it's not
when he's doing his "windmill flurries" he appears to get carried away and his punches become less clean, but his slaps are far from his only punch... i'd say less than a quarter of his landed punches are slaps
in fact i'd say he has one of the most well rounded arsenals in boxing today
Agreed Lefty…I make no bones about being a Lacy fan nor do I deny that he got exposed, outclassed and outhustled…it was Joe’s night and he stepped up big time….i know its asking for much but some props have to be given to Lacy for trying to unify and going across the pond to do so…many young, unbeaten champs wouldn’t even risk that….Jeff dared to be great and paid the price for it
Lacy-Calzaghe could have easily been one of those ‘should-have-happened-but-never-did’ fights
I give props to Lacy for taking the beating and being able to walk out of the ring after 12 rounds of that. He went and even though he was clearly out classed he never gave up....Lefty
