Interested to see what people say to come to Joe's defense. I think Calzaghe is a great talent and puts punches together better that most, but I just don't see greatness. Beating a aged Eubank, Lacy, Kessler, and Hopkins on an off night doesn't do it for me in terms of his legacy.
On his arrogance, if he (or Mayweather) thinks that retiring undefeated means you're an all time great, he's wrong. All I hear from him is that he's a legend killer. Does that mean he just picks on old men?
Sorry, I know a lot of people like him but I can't stand him. Go Roy!
Good stuff, let me try to respond accordingly.
Calzaghe/Kessler
I just didn't like Kessler going into that fight, not personally, personally I think he's an ace guy. But I didn't see anybody on his record that Joe wouldn't handle with ease. And I agree with your point on respecting Joe's style, it's hard to respect. From a technical standpoint he does everything wrong, yet always wins, which is frustrating to a guy like me who knows he's not that good.
You're spot on about Manfredo as well. I'm a guy who takes this sport very seriously, and anybody who ends up in the big time thanks to a television show doesn't have my respect because they didn't earn it the right way. They got a "pass go, collect $200" card essentially.
But Joe acted as if Manfredo was some type of real credible guy, and ontop of it all, it was a hometown stoppage. Manfredo got hit with what? 6 of those 20 slaps? I mean I know he's dogshit, but surely even he could stand up to that.
About Calzaghe/Hopkins, obviously I thought Joe lost that one. But the only real thing you need to know about that fight, aside from Hopkins dishing out the more effective blows and making Joe look foolish, is what was said in the corners before the bell to sound the beginning of the 12th and final round.
Hopkins corner was calm, cool, and collected. Roach told him he was winning. Big surprise right? That's not the interesting thing.
The interesting thing is that Joe's own father told him he was losing the fight, not just before the 12th, but EVERY time Joe went back to his corner. He was pushing him, shouting, telling him he was losing, etc... I've never seen Enzo act that way in the corner. He knows his son should've lost that night.
Great post man, make sure you tell Roy tomorrow we're counting on him over here to finally shatter the myth of this joke Calzaghe once and for all. We're all pulling for him here.
And get me an autograph! :lol1:
You and WESS have some good stuff comign from this thread. Very nice. Keep it up.
So B-Hop just schooled the latest, young, middleweight champ, but he was an old man against Calzaghe? That post made you look like one of the Calzonie fans you so despise, but instead of hugging you're hating. :fing02:
No, I call HOP "old" because he IS old. I have always called him old. The Calzaghe, Pavlik and hopefully soon Jones fight. He will all be "OLD".
Still he didn't gain any respect for such a performance against an "OLD" man that made him look like an Amateur that punched air all night to get a sad SD. Joe and Enzo had the face of defeat that night.
Jones would have schooled Joe like Hop just did to Pav.

I'm no Reid fan myself. I rate him somewhere between Simon Brown and Andy Kolle. But he deserved that nod, I rarely bring that one up myself because most Joe fans here, only started following him post-Kessler, or post-Lacy in some cases.
And you're right, he did get lucky.
I could write an entire book of my opinions on Calzaghe.
I'm not totally dumping on him though, I've given him some credit, but he is highly overrated by his admirers.
Every fighter is overrated by his fans and admirers, to at least some extent. You ought not to let that bother you so much. Hopkins fans are just as bad as Jones fan, just as bad as Klitchko fans, and all are every bit as bad as Calzaghe fans. The only difference between them is that some are more fashionable to nuthug than others, and will cause you less trouble here on this forum.
Nah Joe is cool he just needs to not mention these words again in a interview
Kessler
Lacy
Underfeated
at the end of the day
Why not? They were the names everyone and his dog were mentioning to fight Calzaghe because everyone thought they could beat him and he proved everyone wrong. They were both young undefeated champs exactly the same as Pavlik was before the Hopkins fight. Before they fought him Kessler and Lacy were meant to beat him and they were both good champions who had beaten other good champs. Now, it seems everyone pretends they knew these guys were meant to be overrated or something.
"Oh yeah man, I always knew Kessler was overrated before he fought Joe. I mean who had he ever beaten. Mundine is a bum, Bayer was shit, Andrade is too green ... " etc etc, on and on.
Christ, now I'm even hearing everyone saying that Hopkins was just having an off night. Hopkins? An off night? Yeah, sure he was. He's just proven that he's still up there with the very best P4P'ers today and Calzonie still doesn't get credit because suddenly Hopkins was having an off night. It's absolutely hilarious.
"Hopkins is one of the best ever! He just pwned Pavlik at 43 years. The loss to Calzaghe one fight before after beating Wright and Tarver doesn't mean anything though 'cause he was just having an off night ya know?"
:lol1:

O I remember the Calzaghe's faces and the words coming from the corners. His fans claim it was motivation... must have been a new technique of motivation then. lol
In all, they (Enzo and Joe) both knew they had lost and wont entertain the thought of a rematch with Hop. Yet a REAL legend would face a man that he lost too or barley won a SD against. Or at least one would think.
Quick example: Jones fighting Tarver for the 2nd and 3rd time. That's what a REAL champion would do, PROVE yourself. As history speaks, Jones lost. BUT still got in the ring with the guy and didn't have too because "he already won".
Good posts by you as well. Like I said you and I think a like, I just do more shit talking. I get a kick out of his fans that argue, beg, plead and cry for people to respect there hero. My thoughts are, RESPECT is earned. NOT begged for!
Anyway Roy's coming back to Florida for the day to promote the fight. I'm going to go visit!
We think a like. Only thing different is I picked Kessler to win for 3 reasons.
1. His youth/stamina.
2. He has good power and an ok chin.
3. I dislike everything about Joe and just wanted to pick someone other than him to win. Kessler was a start. I don't really respect Joe's style, power, or anything about him. It is very annoying to watch him throw "punches", let a lone speak like he's going down in history with Ali. Disappointing as that may seem, he will not be considered an ATG, yet he might be inducted into the HOF. I think in order to secure that, he MUST destroy Jones on Nov 8th. Anything else will diminish him, due to Roy being "over rated" "OLD" "washed up" "past his prime" "SHOT" so on and so on. Like reed has said, Roy has everything to gain while Joe has everything to lose. If Joe does not WIN by a uncontested UD or TKO/KO. It will hurt his career/"legacy". He is supposed to win and win REALLY REALLY big. Roy Jones should actually die in the ring. If he does not Joe's legacy will be in question.
We do think a like when talking about Lacy. I cant stand him or his style. I didn't watch Joe and Jeff fight until I heard about how bad Lacy lost. I was actually surprised to even hear Joe's named mentioned, for he was a nobody at that time but a euro fighter that decided to never leave home.
I also lost the very little respect I did have as soon as the words "Great American fighter" came out of Joe's mouth when he was speaking of Peter "the tv show star" Manfredo. That was sad and Pathetic. The fight was no different, along with that fat donut eating REF who should be banned from the wonderful sport of BOXING.
The Hopkins fight I think should have been a draw but I can see the reason for which the outcome became. Still he didn't gain any respect for such a performance against an "OLD" man that made him look like an Amateur that punched air all night to get a sad SD. Joe and Enzo had the face of defeat that night.
When Roy Jones Jr was on top he looked at Joe Calzaghe as Joe Calzaghe looks at Pavlik. FACT. Jones would have schooled Joe like Hop just did to Pav. Now a days is different story, it is actually a fair fight. I still pick Jones to school Joe in the mental aspect and if Jones comes out with legs and can go 12 rounds he has this fight.
Anyway you and I have the same views. I just talk more shit about Slapper Joe and his pathetic style. I gave him props for schooling The untested Robot Kessler and the win over Eubank and thats about it.
Everyone will be surprised when 24/7 comes out. Jones aint no joke. There will be a lot of calzaghe fans in doubt once they see Jones on the first episode. Thanks to TRUTH (I'm hooking you up) I'm actually going to go see Roy tomorrow. I got a few questions for him. (I'll share)
Good stuff, let me try to respond accordingly.

But seriously, his opponet was Kessler. I picked Calzaghe in that fight, I had no idea why anybody would pick Kessler other than his youth. Kessler is nothing special, he's an average technician with a piss poor record (by that I mean he's almost 30 and his most noteable fight is a loss), and that's about as far as it goes.
We've all seen how amazing Lacy turned out to be, and that may very well be due to the beatdown Joe put on him, but I honestly never thought much of the kid going into that fight. I barely knew Lacy, I knew he was hyped, but I also knew Calzaghe beat Eubank and that is why I picked him to win the decision. Granted I didn't expect it to be that bad of a beating, but who did?
Aside from that He's got Eubank, which was a solid win. Hopkins, which is a fair win even though everybody knows I thought Bernard won, and possibly Jones.
I think he lost to Robin Reid a very long time ago. I know if I could be anyone in that fight, I'd rather be the guy who dealt out the damage than the guy who got the judges' approval.

WisePugilist his name is, change the name or brush up on history. You're nowhere near wise yet. And this isn't even a Calzaghe thing for me, it's an Ali thing and it's a history thing first and foremost.
Anybody who thinks Ali was loved during his stint at the top needs the smelling salts.
You're right, he was absolutely hated, mostly because of his mouth. My dad and his cronies, that I recall, never mentioned his color, style, anything else...just his loud mouth.
He was loved by the counterculture/anti-war group for going to jail instead of Nam. Loved by Africans, Hated by the establishment and most whites.
And the Establishment happened to be the majority of the Nation's population at that time. The same assholes who backed Frazier as if they loved him in the first Ali fight, then turned their back on him the very next day because they had no more use for him.
Eventually, even the Establishment came to realize the bundled failure of the Vietnam was and even they embraced Ali.
Some of these kids just don't know anything about their history though. They think Ali was loved from day one, George Foreman was always a cuddly family man, and that Joe Calzaghe is a legend.
(Admittedly kidding about that last part.)
Calling Calzaghe's style "ass backwards" is basically a tacit acknowledgment on your part that he has a unique and winning style. Its a winning style simply as a matter of fact, and its a unique style because he doesn't fight like you are "supposed" to fight. Yet he makes it work. and back in the day, he was knocking people out as well.
An ordinary fighter with unorthodox/poor technique gets owned. A special talent with an unorthodox style can reach the highest levels of the sport.
Calzaghe is a special fighter, though no all time great, and I for one appreciate it when a fighter brings some weirdness and variety to the table.
This is why people like Naseem Hamed will be bettered remembered than the many fighters who could probably have beaten him.
First off, I didn't think I had to post that Joe's style is unique and that it's a winning one. I figured peole who've seen him fight and know his record could put 2 and 2 together.
You won't find me argue anything about his style other than from a pure boxing standpoint (and an aesthetical standpoint) it looks like piss in motion. But I won't say it doesn't get the job done.
I agree with Calzaghe not being an all time great.
I just don't agree with him being special either. To me a special fighter is someone like Pernell Whittaker, Floyd Mayweather, Bernard Hopkins, or Juan Manuel Marquez. Guys who use their defensive mastery and boxing intelligence, coupled with their raw, god given talent and combine it into a highly entertaining feast for the eyes. (If you like the defensive game.)
Joe's defense is shit, maybe that's part of the reason I can't bring myself to like him. I'll admit I'm rather biased towards defensive craftsman.
But we all look for something different in the fighters we support.

I don't mind talking about that fight too much Chunk. The issues you speak of are somewhat valid, except of course the last one. It was a close fight yes, but having watched it I do think he just deserved the win, allbeit just. You say it was a 50/50 toss up, then that Robin deserved it. What kind of 50/50 toss up is that, favour the guy you prefer to win, that being Reid?
I had it 7 rounds to 5 I think, forget now though. I and many think JMM deserved at least one win over Pac out of 2 but no one talks about those much. Not even the ones whom think that, they're over it already.
I think he deserved it. where's the problem?
The fight was close but Joe was gonna win because, well, he's Joe Calzaghe.
As for me being over it. well, i wasn't really on it in the first place but had he have lost that fight, his career would've been different.

Dude everybody still talks about that, Marquez got jipped the second time out. Maybe jipped is a harsh word, Manny did do well himself, but I think Marquez certainly deserved the nod.
What I don't like about him is the way he fights, everything about him is ass backwards. From the way he squares himself up when throwing, to the awful slapping routine, to his piss poor grasp on balance.

Calzaghe fans don't talk about that fight much but when they do, i hear and read the usual:
*Joe had a broken hand.
*Joe had food poisioning in the week leading upto the fight.
*Joe had back problems.
*Joe lost his lucky underwear.
They shy away from the fact that Robin Reid(who i don't rate) put in, probably the best performance of his life, and should and deserved to get a decision in what i reckon was a 50/50 toss up. Joe was Frank Warren's prize fighter, so he got the SD win.
He got lucky.
