I'm not one of the bozo's that claim Williams doesn't have the right to fight at 147lbs because he is too tall. It's simple, if you stand on the scales and weigh within the limit you deserve to fight reguardless the hieght. POINT BLANK. That's what keeps things interesting in the sport of boxing. I just think his skills and power are overated. O.k., he beat Margarito in a close decision. Big deal. Everyone talks about his power because he caught Quintana with one good shot in thirteen rounds. Wow..He got schooled twelve and one half of them. The fundemantals are there to build,... but he still has a long way to go. He's just good for now. no where close to great (YET)

A few responses.
You say big deal to him beating Margarito, while many boxing fans and writers are hailing Margarito has THE MAN at WW, Williams beat him just over a year ago.
As for Quintana, I honestly think a lot of that had to do with Williams buying into his own hype, and just underperforming that night. If you want evidence, see the rematch. And I would bet most of what I own a rubber wouldnt be very different.
My point is that Williams is not exactly overrated: he has the talent and capability to beat any WW in the world right now bar none. Its just that he has also shown he can be flakey, on one occasion so far.
Sure, it can be argued that Margarito had an off night against Williams. Problem is, it sure didnt look like it, looked liked stylistically Williams is a compete nightmare for Margarito.
And outside of that, I cant really see anyone beating Williams, save MAYBE Cotto. Everyone else would get tossed.
You have to keep in mind Williams had NO AMMY CAREER, so I think its expected for him to have had some ****ups and bad performances for a while.
He has more to prove, but he looks promising as a welterweight and maybe even as a Middleweight. But I still can't believe after he KO'd Kolle he says, "this is why Kelly pulled out".
He beat Margarito but he got beat by Quintana and beating Andy Kolle dont make you the MW king either I'm not saying he is bad, but his fans are stepping out of line lately calling him P4P material
yes yes and yes..why because people are comparing him to legends already.hes still improving and is a solid fighter.
I would rate him above solid. But yeah, the comparisons to Hearns were way to premature. He may not turn out to be the next Motor city cobra, but I don't see him falling to journeyman status anytime soon either.
As the thread starter, I've been entertained by the replies so far. He has the fundementals to be great one day, possibly in several weight classes. I take nothing away from him. He just needs more time, more high level comp. and way better defense. CLOTTEY is the best w.w. as of now.
I don't think he's overrated, he's shown he's a good fighter. At 147 he should NEVER lose, he just has too much of an advantage. It's like a 6-10 center trying to guard shaq in the post. With that being said i do think margarito beats him in a re-match. I can honestly say i would like watching williams fight at 160-168 he seems like a cool dude every time I see an interview with him (i would be some what of a fan of his and would root for him against anyone in those division except taylor i really like taylor). Him at 147 doesn't impress me though but i hope him and margarito settle the score soon!!
He definitely has room to improve, but I think he is the #1 WW right now. It's hard to say how much he improved after the 1st Quintana fight even though I do think he just had an off night.
losin a decision 7-5 does not equal getting schooled for 12 rounds. Hes my favorite fighter and i believe he is the best at 147, but yes some people do overrate him, just like people do with a lot of fighters. I think he can be an atg, but he is certainly no lock to be one. And he has to find fighters willing to fight him.
To ur topic title Hell yesssss on here he is...
I heard the dude being compared to thomas hearns and how would he flare against Hagler type threads....
