So only 1 man out of 51 cruiserweights who has held a Cruiserweight title has been successful at Heavyweight (obviously the great Holyfield) thats only 2 percent of CW's with a title stepping upto HW being succesful! Most of the Cruisers who have packed on some extra bulk and stepped up with the heavy hitters have failed miserably.
It seem history is stacked up against David Haye, Haye will rewrite history
Remember that Cruiserweight is only 30 years old and it has only had a limit of 200 lbs for the last five years.
Many of the big names at heavyweight started as light heavies and even names that didn't start at light heavy weighed in at significantly less than the current cruiserweight limit.
Jack Dempsey, Gene Tunney, Tommy Loughran, Jim Braddock, Floyd Patterson, Archie Moore, boxing history is littered with guys who moved up in weight and were successful as heavyweights. To limit the selection to cruiserweights is deliberately skewing the data to better support your position.
what a load of trash...what about Chris Byrd?
what about Michael Moorer?
i'm talking about cruiserweight titlists who've moved upto HW and been successful.
Moorer moved up from LH
Lots of heavyweight champs have weighed in below 200lb, leon spinks, Patterson, Johansson, Marciano, Wallcott, Charles, Louis, Tunney, Dempsey etc. Plus more modern heavyweight that are naturally light heavyweight or cruiserweights include Byrd, Moorer, M Spinks, Chambers, RJJ, Gomez, Toney etc etc
don't forget david tua.
I know there is a poster on here from New Zealand, I'll try and persuade him to do it.
i'll do it dec. 7
i'll be back to being a cornish new zealander then. :)
Who am I thinking of... Bob Fitzsimmons?
The guy that Roy Jones was trying to duplicate his feat.
Indeed, it was Bob Fitzsimmons.
Stanley Ketchel tried to do it as well but was knocked out by Jack Johnson.
Technically you are right, but...
Toney "won" a title from Ruiz only to have it taken back.
Jones won a HW title skipping from LHW to cruiser.
Michael Spinks won a HW title skipping from LHW to cruiser.
Bob Foster (?) went from MW to HW.
It still would be amazing if Haye found some success at HW.
Everyone you named was a much more skilled fighter than Haye, in my opinion. That said, he does have decent speed and a good punch, and the heavyweight division is terrible. I give him a good chance of winning a title if he can improve his stamina.
Foster was a light heavyweight.
Archie Moore, Floyd Patterson, Gene Tunney, Ezzard Charles all moved up from light heavyweight to heavyweight with varying success.

We'll see. Haye has the physique to be a successful heavyweight but we don't know how he'll do against the big guys yet, it's pretty much the same concerns people had when Holyfield moved up to heavyweight, will his punches be as effective, will his speed carry up with him etc.
the thing with haye is, he is actually a natural HW, 6ft3, who was boiling down from 230 lbs to the 200 lb limit. So he has even more advantage than all of the other CW champs who moved up, to do well

haye is a real cruiser. plus most cruisers are the small heavy type. 5'11 or so.
