is there any other fighter who has looked as good at 35 as joe? I know BHop is still at the top aged 40 odd but he had been beaten before and was not beating young undefeated fighters?
That should have said has in the title btw, dodgy keyboard doh
I think B-Hop deserves the best >35 year old
Much as I am a Calzaghe fan I think there are a 3 other boxers who deserve the mantle of best boxer post 35. Though I really dislike the guy B-Hop deserves the #1 position as he beat Felix Tito Trinidad when this guy was at the peak of his powers. Indeed, he was never the same after this defeat. You also have to admire the fact that he pulled off wins (ugly yes) but wins nonetheless against Tarver and Wright.
Two other guys worth mentioning are Lennox Lewis who apart from a flash knockdown to Hasim Rahman secured wins over Rahman in the rematch and also beat Klitschko, Tua, Tyson and Botha (hmm ok not the best) at the age of 35......
The third guy worth mentinoning is Glen Johnson. This guy has had some of his best wins (and some disgraceful decisions against him e.g. Chad Dawson) in the latter part of his career. Indeed, I think the older Glen Johnson would have fared better than the younger Glen Johnson against B-Hop.
We will truly be able to judge Calzaghe's status as best >35 year old boxer once he fights Roy Jones Junior in November. If he wins that and then takes on Pavlik in 2009 (I think he will if he beats Jones convincingly) then he deserves the best over 35 year old title. I think Tarver looked better then Claz at 35, KOing Roy, beating him again, 2 good fights with Glencoffe Johnson, both close, 1-1 in those fights.
Nah Tarver's entire career is beating a weight drained Roy Jones, if Roy had managed to maintain his physical tools on the way down from HW to LHW then Tarver would be a nobody, Calzaghe would not be the favourite to win this fight and Roy would proberbly have retired by now.
Hopkins looked better at 36 then Calzaghe at 35. Trinidad was undefeated at 40-0 when hops beat him at that age.
Beat is being nice. He demolished a seemingly invincible Trinidad at the time. The beating he received was beyond anything physical. The mental and emotional beating he got that night killed Tito's fighting spirit. And it was sad, cuz he a once a great fighter!
I think hes looking for everyone to say "Joe Calzaghe looks better than Roy Jones Jr at the age of 35"
Roy also was superman at 35, depends on the month
Calzaghe looked bad against Hopkins at 36 ( well, a lot of guys look bad against Hopkins)
Mike McCallum fought to a draw with an undefeated James Toney at around 35.
Toney himself was beating the undefeated Vassily Jirov at around 35 at Cruiserweight
Hopkins was around his prime at 35, I think he was that old or older when he schooled Trinidad.
those are some other Middleweights, anyway
