Lets say he beats Jones fairly comfortably, but doesn't look brilliant, then goes on to beat Kelly Pavlik and looks excellent, like he did against Kessler, what will you say then? How will you rate him?
My rating on Calzaghe wouldn't change as I expect him to beat both Jones and Pavlik (if the fight happens) decisively. The Pavlik win would be a nice name to have on his resume though.

Not likely to ever happen.
Very very unrealistisc BUT yes he would be among greats
Does joe really get respect if he beats pavlik? Seriously, he beat undefeated Jeff Lacy, and we all just looked at is as "Jeffy Lacy was a bum and joe exposed him" However, before the fight many people concicdered lacy the next great thing/current great thing - Wouldnt we do the same if he beats pavlik. People don't respect calzeghe and they never will. The guy can't be fighting into his 40s hoping people finally agree he's damned good
Joe has always been there for who ever wonts the fight people seem to forget this!! All I hear is he didnt fight this guy or that guy..Whats it all about?? The truth is other boxers were running scared in this division..We had Benn, Eubanks, Next we come out with a Joe Calzaghe who is better than them both IMO. If Jo fights Pavlik which I wish he wouldnt as he does not need this fight to prove anything in my book..And wins Then I would hold him in even higher asteam. I have total respect for Pavlik and you would be a fool not to

Did you fall asleep at the computer again?????????
If Calzaghe wants to make a statement, he'll beat Jones and then the winner of Dawson-Tarver. Throw in Pavlik too.
But if it's Jones and done, he'll get NO respect for beating a shell of a once great fighter. Zero, zip, none. Which is why he won't retire.
Funny that in order for you to respect Calzaghe, he'd have to fight opponents than in all likelihood he never will. I agree with you that Tarver/ Dawson is a tougher fight on paper than Pavlik, but surely Joe's likely ability to beat Pavlik should not count against him, after all, Pavlik is more highly ranked than either of the others and is the definition of a live opponent.
I pretty much agree. Roy may not be the prime fighter he was but he's not as past it as many make out, and he's a very skilled fighter regardless. He has the skill set to at least make it competitive, switch tactics up, make Calzaghe look bad and struggle for it. So it wouldn't surprise me. Whose out boxed Roy and looked great? Calzaghe will not be winning with a lucky big shot, or a big lethal shot period. He'll be outclassing a classy fighter.
If he beat Pavlik and looked very good I think it'd be very good indeed for his reputation. Because it'd mean a very awkward Hopkins couldn't ruin Pavlik enough, yet Calzaghe could not only not get hit with more talent, but hit him and look good.
abadger, if Calzaghe scrapes past Jones Jr and loses comprehensively to Pavlik, what will you say?
If he scrapes past Jones I won't be that surprised, because Joe has had some off-colour performances in his career, so it wouldn't be the first time. Also someone like Jones should know how to make Calzaghe look bad at the very least, so its quite possible we'll see a closer fight than I expect. I would be surprised though, Calzaghe should have far too much for Jones at this stage. I wouldn't revise my high opinion of Calzaghe, and would revise my opinion of todays Jones upwards.
If he then went on to lose to Pavlik however, I would be very surprised, since I see no possible way that Calzaghe could do anthing other than thoroughly outclass Pavlik. If he were to lose whilst still appearing to have even half of his A game remaining I would have to say that I personally had overrated Joe. Obviously, if the fight happens and a losing Calzaghe looks like a shot fighter then obviously I will say so, but only if that really is the truth.
It seems to me it doesn't matter what Joe Calslappy does he will never be respected on this American dominated forum because of that, he's not a yank. If he was a majority of the people on here would be shouting non stop about him.
If he beats Pavlik and Dawson, everyone would have to respect him. Until then NOOOO

still, hes fighting a roy thats 2 months shy of 40, and a guy that will be fighting 10 pounds above his normal weight....
its like every god damn fight, the opponent is either, unproven, too old, or blown up...
i already rate him very highly, even though i dont like him as a fighter,
but his fight with Roy is meaningless to me, he will win comfortably although i hope Roy wins,
if Pavlik looks good against Hopkins it will prove to me he is the real deal,
i dont know where i would rate him all time but he would be up there, somewhere
How can 1 fight when he was nearly 37, counteract all of the previous 45 fights he ever had
I never say it would
but im sayin will they say he was overrated if this happens...

To answer your question (unlike all the other people that have posted).
I would rate Calzaghe higher than Jones ATG.
Currently I have Jones higher, but he could change that
What if Jones Jnr whoops him?
Will they say Joe was overrated?
