The first knee he took was for a breather; the second he wasn't even under fire. That was surrender.
I'm not saying he's a "coward" or anything stupid like that, but it was a heartbreaking moment to see him mentally crack.
The second time was nothing unlike the first one in that he was trying to find respite because he knew he wasn't in any shape to continue getting hit the way he was.
As for Rizo, yeah man I give Margarito all the respect in the world after a performance like that. Until now, Margarito had come up on the short end in his last two step up fights but he came all the way back last night with that exceptional performance.
Shane... in any loss he has had. He has always given the other fighter his props. Every fighter should take a note from him when it comes to conducting themselves before and after a fight.
This "quitter" talk is nonsense. Cotto got beaten to mush for our entertainment. He was going to lose at that point; he was going to get KO'd. Boxing isn't important enough to risk any more damage than is necessary.
shane mosely... after the close fight with cotto.
Co-sign. SSM coulda bitched and gotten away wit it cuz that fight was close but he just gave props to the winner and left it at that.
Seriously. What fucking excuse could Cotto make?
The second knockdown was just a case of him going down to avoid punishment.
If I remember correctly, he kept backpeddling and when he got in the corner, he just went down.
What excuse can a guy who does something like that make?
everybody I watched it with was saying he wanted out too. seeing him look to his corner made me sad too like kayjay says. something about it all was very sad at the time. he knew he was finished and he wanted out.
he CLEARLY wanted out but he didnt quit. What im saying is, he didnt take a knee with the intention of having the fight stopped.
He wanted to try and survive the fight, but he also knew it was over. It was like a sad realization, but i personally would not call it quitting
Because his corner stopped it. Champions are only allowed to lose by being brutalized now? What is this with this backward idea today? I'd think that a smart fella like you could realize that Cotto, after taking 200+ power shots from one of the hardest punching Welterweights around, after being seriously hurt in the 11th round of a brutal fight, did not need to take anymore punishment. He had it, his corner saw that, they stopped the fight. In light of Oscar Diaz and Leavander Johnson, I'd think you'd realize that. Brain ijuries are the best way for fighters to go out now though...excellent.
A champion should go out with grace. Cotto certainly did. He went right over to Margarito and embraced him and made no excuses after the fight. He acknowledged he was the lesser man on that night.
There are two questions here:
Did he quit?
Is it acceptable that he quit?
Perhaps I moved from one to the other. He did quit; whether it was a smart move to do so is another issue.
He was only a few punches from being knocked out.
I still think Cotto is a tougher match for Mayweather than Margarito, Williams, etc. That doesn't mean Cotto can win against Floyd, but only that Marg. was a uniquely bad matchup for Cotto.
I could agree with that.
If Mayweather and Cotto signed to fight, i might have picked Mayweather after all the hype and studying and all that good stuff.
Cotto clearly was the greatest threat to Mayweather in the welterweight division. He dfinetly has the ability to compete with a guy like Mayweather. I think Cotto and Castillo are on the same level of fighter.
Gringo I tell you I was almost in tears walking down the AC boardwalk after the fight; this isn't Cotto hate. He backed from one corner to the other, taking no punches, and turned into a fetal position. That was the saddest moment I can think of as a sporting fan.
He's still the best fighter in the division in my estimation, but he didn't get counted out like a champ should.

wow
oh wait, you said Baldomir was going to make it a fight with Floyd too
why do I waste my time
dude ur so fuckin annoying. Like u think ur the big tuna around here, it cracks me up. U know as little about boxing as most of the dipshits around here, i gotta say.
Anybody who doesnt think Cotto would give Mayweather a very good fight, does not know boxing. Its plain and simple. I've argued it 100 times with you and you have ur opinion. thats fine, just dont state it like its a fact.
I lOOOOOOOOVe how mayweathers fans support his decision to flee boxing rather then fight his greatest threats. what a joke
dude he could probably STILL be Mayweather. Mayweather isnt THAT great of a fighter. Styles make fights and Cottos much smarter agression and stiff jab could definetly make Mayweather-Cotto a great fight.
Lets not forget the absolute brilliance Cotto showed in the first 6 rounds of that fight. he couldnt keep up the pace, but a fight with mayweather wouldnt be close to that type of pace.
A Mayweather-Cotto fight would be a matchup of skills, not a matchup of wills like this fight was.

Remind me again how that is not quitting?
I hate that I find myself siding with Diego and Dios against gringo and Antonio, but I laughed out loud here.
Cotto quitting was a very hard thing to accept. Tragic.
This was Machismo Incarnate; but the next minute he's curling into a ball in the corner. That was sad. You can't write something that sad.
No, I'll still be laughing at people like you that thought this was the guy that could beat Mayweather. I mean, you couldn't find anybody better to pick than this guy?
