If Roy Jones Jr. actually wins this fight with Calzaghe, in your opinion, how will it be viewed ?
Will it be more of a case of Roy Jones Jr. simply being THAT good even at this point?
-OR -
Will it be more of a case of Joe Calzaghe simply NEVER being as good as his record?
What do you think?
That pretty much sums up the reason why I am against Calzaghe fighting Jones rather than taking on a fighter like a Pavlik, who he said he wanted to fight - right up until Pavlik was going to grant his wish.
Then "Mighty Joe" :bs2: says Jones is a tougher fight, and Pavlik hasn't earned a fight with him yet. Like boxing fans don't know he has made a career of defending his titles against MUCH less accomplished fighters than Pavlik...
Interesting but I think it has more to do with the money. Clearly he's gonna make more in a fight with Jones. I think Joe knows he's lost a step or two and wants to get out with as much money as he can.
Also Jones is still widely regarded by many to be some sort of Demigod. So he beats him and he's the greatest fighter of shit.. i dunno.. whatever.. Yea I don't get it either, but there it is.
No offence to Roy or his fans.
Take a look at the last 3 years of each guys careers.
Joe just had his best wins against young lions and a wiley old Hopkins who himself fought decentet young class opposition.
And beat Roys conquerer in Tarver.
What has Roy done?
Fought 2 nobodies and a tired inactive Tito who was up for the payday.
And was best at 147.
I can't see how Roy wins unless he takes Ripped Fuel.

I know Calzaghe's greatness and how he stands as a fighter. He's beatable(I had Hopkins beating him) but also elite. I don't overrate him or underrate him so I wouldn't look down on him as a fighter if he lost to Roy Jones JR. He has already proven himself.

Definitely. If Joe can't beat this version of Jones, he never was all that. This is a risky fight for Joe, IMO.

Yeah, you're right. Just an easy big payday for Calzaghe. How can his fans live with it? I don't know...I mean, you wouldn't pay to watch this, would you?
It would just mean Joe has finally become a past-prime, shot fighter.
It happens to everyone sooner or later.
Funny, going into the Mitchell fight in 2002, some people said Joe might be past his best, and lose to the younger fighter. But he's still around, and many of those younger guys are long gone from serious competition!
Dude, if you lose to a 40 year old man I don't think saying you were past it is being a viable excuse.
Depends on who you ask. Honestly, should RJ get the win he should get props instead of Joe C gettin hated on by people sayin 'Joe wasn't shit anyway.' The 2008 version of Joe C is a quality challenge for '08 RJ, so if he wins don't rob him of his shine.
If RJJ pulls out a win I can't imagine him being left out of the top 10 ATG's. Since Calzaghe is already getting heat for his resume and slapping it won't do much to beat RJJ but a loss would confirm what his proponents say.
I know Joe is not an all time great but he is by far from garbage. He is really good but not an all time great. If Roy beats him I think it will be a lot of Roy is very good still at his age and Calzaghe is good but not amazing. If Calzaghe wins it will help him a little but not as much as it would help jones. If Calzaghe wants to be remembered as an all time great I think he has to beat Jones, Pavlik, and 1 more young guy like Chad Dawson. Just how I feel.
Agree totally. If Roy wins, I hope the haters don't discredit him with beating an overrated fighter. Although I personally don't like Calzaghe, there is a reason we always talk about him. He's a good fighter and a champion. Either Roy has one great performance left in him, or I wanna believe he does. I can't decide what's true yet. Either way, RJJ will always be one my top 3 favorite fighters.
A loss to RJJ in this fight will have JC looking like the biggest idiot who ever had an undefeated record. They'll blame the promoter split, the hands, the location, the ref, the fans, the gloves, etc. etc. There is no pleasing JC's fans, there really isn't. BUT as far as Roy goes, WHEN he wins, the glory must be giveth that day ladies and manladies. RJJ has enough in him to not only win this, but win it looking like the Roy we all STILL love and miss. Calzaghe WILL be exposed for what I've been saying he is all along. Fight night will prove that.
If Roy wins, it means that like Ali, he was not only one of the most gifted boxers in history, but that he has longevity, and iron will, and the heart of a champion as well. It will make him greater than if he would have stayed undefeated, because he will have faced the worst kind of adversity and pulled himself up by his bootstraps to beat the best. It wasn't easy to put himself back in this position, and he had to build himself back up slowly, but he showed improvement from one fight to the next.
In Tarver III, he showed flashes of brilliance, but in the end, was too gun-shy to get the job done. Still it was an improvement over his devastating knockout loss to Glen in his previous fight, or the unexpected 'perfect shot' that Tarver winged at him with his eyes closed and found its mark.
in Prince Badi, Jones faced adversity in terms of tons of pressure in the first round, a scary 3 minutes as Roy shelled up on the ropes. In the end, he got some confidence back in dominating a much lesser fighter for the remaining rounds.
In Hanshaw, Roy faced a more serious threat, albeit B-level competition and looked average. But then he picked it up in the end, upped his defense more on the ropes and got his countering game up against a slower opponent.
Against Tito, he looked MUCH faster than he had looked in years since he fought Tarver the first time (still slower than prime roy). He seemed to be more comfortable with his age. No longer could he blatantly bait opponents in with the high low stance that cost him so dearly against Glen Johnson, but Roy was now fully adapted with a Winky-esque high guard. He put together great punches in bursts. He proved that he could still fight brilliantly in spurts.
Now his confidence is back up, and has become adjusted to his older age and physical limitations. if he defeats Calzaghe, he will have proven something that we couldn't have known about him while he was an untouchable human specimen that was light years more naturally talented than everyone else... his heart, courage, and determination. He will have proven himself once and for all as deserving of being mentioned alongside of the all-time greats right up there with Ali and SRR. Go Roy!!!!
