Why do people think sluggers with no defense are "giving the fans what they like?"

Seriously, are people so stupid that they believe boxers care about what the fans may want so much that they would get hit more on purpose to make the fight exciting? I can't believe people think this is the case. If they fight like that it's because they have more power than skills and think that by bum rushing their opponent they might get the K.O. - THAT'S IT. It's not because they are so preoccupied with the FANS. And if they were, that would be stupid as fuck, because they risk losing and harming their careers and themselves just to make people have fun. People who do not care about them as persons and only want to see the fights. A real intelligent fighter, a real intelligent PERSON actually, when in competition, does what he can to WIN. If someone competing in ANYTHING has goals other than to WIN, then he/she is a TERRIBLE competitor. So if these so-called warriors who only want to please the fans compromise their skills so that the fans will be entertained, they are unaware of the main objective of their sport, and I can't understand why they should be respected at all. Compromise their skills?? If that's how many of these warriors fight then you can't change them into an "intelligent" way of fighting, unless they themselves choose to. It depends upon how accustomed they are in the way they fight. I don't think these warriors are there just to please the fans! It's just the way they fight! And why do many fans love them? Because many fans know a little about your "intelligent" way of fighting! You try to let the fans fight themselves and you'll realize how they fight! Warriors!:haha:

U can be technical, yet exciting at the same time. Look at Juan Manuel Marquez! Guys like Spinks on the other hand are almost impossible for me to watch. JMM is not technical and exciting at the same time

I see where you're coming from... But, you're probably not 100% correct. Why does Ron Artest jepordize his career by running into the stands... it is entirely irrational and indefensible. Sometimes the atmosphere and energy take you to a place that you weren't planning on going. As to the second point, I couldn't agree less.

But we knew it would be that way, we knew back when he was at 140 the fight would play out like that, the styles would force that type of action, either way, the "boring runner" label that mayweather suddenly aquired came mostly from the baldomir/dlh fights. Before that, i dont ever remember mayweather being labeled like that on any board, especially circa 01-05 I agree. And yes, everyone knew it was gonna play out that way.. I actually thought it was gonna be horrible so I was surprised and shocked the way it went. I give Mayweather props for the KO.. I didn't think that would happen either. I predicted a very wide UD for Mayweather.

Mayorga is making more than Spinks right now! I said look at the overall history of boxing. Boxers have made more money than brawlers. Mayorga making more money than Spinks isn't hard to do also Mayorga gets more money more for the shit he does out of the ring than what he does it in besides drinking a beer and smoking a cigarettee in the ring during the post fight interview.

That's a very good point. one of the most interesting things about boxing is the vast differences in style with some matchups and how an individual's tactics play out when the bell rings. All you have to do is go back and what Morales v. Pacquiao 1 and watch the 12 round. "I can recall thinking what a great fight but now Morales is clearly dominating and has Pacquiao exactly where he wants him and the crowd seems bored." Seconds later Morales turns to southpaw and the fans go crazy as they are exchanging punchs. Marquez changed his style to a more fan friendly style so he disaggrees with you. Chavez would get hit most of the time in his prime cause he could take it but when he wanted to he could bob and weave with the best of them. Triniadad only had feet movement thats all he'd get hit so he could hit back. Gomez wouldn't give a rats ass to get hit when he was losing as long as he hit you back, at least thats what i've seen from his fights. Benitez is a totally differnt story, that guy was a wizard.

What....you think people don't like violence? There are some folks who watch boxing or mma stuff partly because they enjoy seeing people get beat up. So yeah...I suppose when a dude like Miranda or Gatti eats fist yeah they're "giving the fans what they want" whether they want to or not. Great Post and I would have to attribute that to the fact that there are boxing fans and there are people that just like seeing people get KTFO. There wouldn't be a market for UFC if this wasn't true. Many Boxing fans turned UFC fans. Although right now we see UFC transforming into something more tactical and less brutal with the introduction of these new faces like the Silva's.

Of course, but my point is (and I'm getting tired of repeating this) that Mayorga does not do this to please the fans, but only because that is the style which he KNOWS how to fight. He couldn't box like Spinks if he tried, and Spinks couldn't brawl like Mayorga if he tried. THIS TOPIC HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT IS EXCITING AND WHAT PEOPLE WOULD RATHER WATCH. IT IS ABOUT HOW BOXERS FIGHT ONLY TO THEIR ABILITY, AND NOT TO WHAT THE FANS WOULD WANT TO SEE FROM THEM. I understand u, but u also have to understand that not everybody finds defensive fighters such as Winky, Bhop, Floyd, Spinks, etc... entertaining. 9/10 times, the casual fan would prefer to see a toe to toe brawl, rather than a technical/defensive display of boxing skills.
