The underlined sentence is what I'm talking about.
I don't mean a handicap in the ring, I mean a handicap when it comes to certain peoples estimations of his achievements.
"He supposed to do this", "he supposed to do that".
Floyd Jr. is in a lose-lose. His gifts are also his curse.
Not on paper. But Legend's and preconceptions are there to be torn down.
People should have been expecting Pac's ferocity and power to carry up and wreak havoc, and those qualities are the primary ones that destroyed Marco Antonio.
Mayweather put on the most comprehensive display of skill against the bigger, stronger man, who was 30+ fights unbeaten. Everything Corrales had was nullified and taken away from him by skill and speed, no brawn.
It's a purer display of irresistible boxing, because it is a perfect illustration of how acute skill and composure can neutralize strength and ferocity when both are involved in something close to their optimum forms.
Huh?????? Ok....now im confused because everything you're saying is agreeing with me but you're disagreeing with me??
Like I said, Floyd is always at a handicap when it comes to people's estimations of this shit because he's so good.
What'd you want him to do at that point? Fight Roy?
This isn't the main factor here. Just because a lot of people were dumb enough not to see that Pac presented some kind of threat to Barrera and would retain his ferocity and power at featherweight, doesn't mean to say they shouldn't have.
What handicap are you talking about?? Mayweather is good no doubt but he had more tools to work with and god given talents to work with than Corales. He was supposed to beat him.
Meanwhile untested opposition who are in only their 3rd US fight dont go beating the 3rd best boxer in the world...let alone beat him in emphatic fashion for 11 rds.
Did I say that? Nuances of skill are what we're talking here.
If you wanna talk about nuances of skill on all accounts Barrera coulda shoulda woulda been able to put on a boxing master class against Pacquiao who was criticized as a 1dimensional fighter at the tiime the same way Mayweather did to cotto. Barrera was very capable of it as he showed against hamed.
But not only did he get beat down into submission...he wasnt allowed to box or stick and move or breathe or get into any sort of rythm going. He also was outclassed and outboxed by a guy up until 4 days ago was still criticized for being a 1trick pony in the ring.
Uhh...try again. Corales was ranked 5th p4p while Floyd was #2 at the time.
Pacquiao's 1st fight against Barrera...Barrera was #3p4p while Pacquiao was a virtual nobody.
Chico was the favorite in that fight, and give me a source that says money may was 2nd
No and why are you going off topic?
We're talking about boxing, you're talking out of your ass.
How about contributing a little eh?!
like your amazing contribution and discussion-closers, "eh"?
my contribution has been made already
come on; Diego barely threw any punches that fight. Pac's Opps all threw more punches and showed more heart no offense to Diego. But damn how are you going to stand there and let Mayweather batter yu up and down and not even use your height or jab ? watch that fight; was corny IMO and if Diego would used his jab more it would be a diff fight. RIP Diego.
You were never in the ring i can tell. You are one of those fans who thinks jabbing is easy. Well to jab you need a target and it takes a certain time to acquire that target, if the targets moves, the process restarts. Simply put Mayweather was too fast for Corrales that night.
How is this relevant to the quality of the performance against the considerable threat Corrales should have presented to Floyd at this stage in his career?
Many of Pac's big wins over the last 5 years have seen him able to overpower his opponents. Mayweather couldn't overpower Corrales physically. He did it with a masterclass of pure boxing technique and speed.
Do you have to be so simple?
Mayweather stopped him throwing those punches. That's what was so impressive about it. Corrales didn't "let" Floyd do shit...he simply couldn't stop what was happening to him.
Floyd Jr. was irresistible and took everything away from Corrales.
Exactly. Pure boxing masterclass against the bigger, stronger, 30+ fight unbeaten beast.
It's like Mayweather starts at an ironic deficit in many people's judgements of a debate like this because of his skill level. Like Floyd Jr.'s performances are less impressive because he used an unfair advantage over his opponent and didn't get hit. Like he shouldn't be able to cheat by using his speed and skills to completely incapacitate a notoriously fearsome fighter like Corrales, he should have standed there and trade with him, that would have been a better performance, oh the humanity etc.
And it's plum easy to see that Floyd Jr. has really gotten inside the heads of a lot of his detractors here.
They're obsessed.

pretty much my thoughts on it

Pacman Beating Barrera The Way He Did Was Pretty Impressive To Me.
Doesn't Get Much More Impressive

It's relevant because as you said....Corales was a threat to Floyd's career at the time. Yet floyd was still the decidedly better fighter.
Marco Antonio Barrera was the 3rd best boxer in the world at the time right behind roy jones jr and floyd mayweather. Yet he didnt just get beat...he got beat down by an untested nobody who was coming up in weight to challenge.
Are you telling me knocking down and knocking out opponents do not take skill?
Because then the thread would be over and it would be solved but WE JUST WANT TO ARGUE DAMN IT!
i don't points from a thread that gets shut down on the first page...
So both of their opponents had issues outside the ring leading into the fight, Corrales maybe more so and I thought their performances were about the same but I don't want to give credit to one over the other, both were great performances and great wins.
ok fair enough, that's the bottom line i suppose...
i haven't changed my opinion though
